Region-locked video... ;grrr

aint it great.. sigh..

I'm not usually a stickler for spelling, but you're looking for gaffe.  Gaff had me momentarily excited, thinking you were explaining how they were using practical makeup effects.  Something that would get me buying all access immediately.

DOH!

And if the world doesn't make sense, then what use is telling stories about it?

Yeah I and a few people were not happy about that roof top scene too.. however there's no interplanetary beaming involved and it is explained the second ep why no one seemed to notice what happened.. If you don't care about spoilers I explain more in my earlier ep2 review post here:
http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=1319.msg123098#msg123098

My thoughts on what's led to some peoples frustrations with ep 1 & ep2 (once again has spoilers):

Anyway I'm still enjoying the show but am still unsure as to whether I actually really really like it or not. Still need to see how story pans out lol.

Episode 3 seen: (spoiler alert)

In the final episodes of DS9 I remember section 31 agent Sloan saying that the Klingons had been too severely damaged by the war leaving the Romulans and the Federation as the only remaining super powers.

I wondered the same.. holograms are just as dangerous.

Episode 4 seen (belated).. WE'RE OFF!:

Guess I better hurry up and watch Ep 5 now instead of reading comments as that's just asking for spoilers haha.

Yeah.. episode 5.. wow.. If people here disliked it you don't have to worry about me arguing with you on this one guys. As this episode broke me too, or more precisely it broke my enjoyment of the show. I didn't enjoy that at all. I thought maybe if I sleep on it I'd feel better but nope, today I'm even grumpier about it haha. Up until now I've only had little nitpicks and have really enjoyed show and have defended it when people have complained about it "not feeling like star trek" but there was next to nothing Star Trek feeling about Ep 5. Those people who complained about past eps not being star trek are gonna looooooove this one lol. I don't wanna walk away from a Star Trek episode feeling frustrated and miserable. When they played the exciting trailer for the next ep and all the cool Borg stuff at the end I didn't even give s***. I was like.. whatever. They're gonna have to work hard in the next few eps to undo the damage that one just did. I can only hope that they had to go that dark and callous to setup the audience to be brought back to the light and happy ending lol. But I can't help but think that if it turned me off that badly then all those people out there who's really not been that into the new show and were barely holding on will probably be like "stuff this!" and be done with it after seeing that ep lol.

Urgh.. end of rant. Breath Daniel.. Just breath... lol

Like I said.. they're gonna need to work hard to undo the damage this episode did. I think I'd rather rewatch most of the episodes in discovery season 1 than ever watch that episode again lol.

Everywhere I go so far I've seem pretty horrified responses to ep5. I've seen a couple of dudes say they loved ep5 though, I was like WAAAT lol.

lol that actually looks kinda good lol.

Probably noticed I haven't posted here since I blew up a bit over Ep5 haha. I have kept watching the show though but was less invested in it to continue posting my episode round ups. I said after ep 5 that they'd really need some good eps to undo the damage that did, so...

Here's my thoughts on eps 6-9..

See Blake, this speaks to what I've been trying to say as an OG Trekker to all youse TNG and even '09 fans all along - this is how we've felt since 1986.  People who hate what you loved always come along and ruin it.

I haven't been burned in years, because I still have my Spock, and nothing after Wrath really happened; by the time Discovery turned up, I was only moderately annoyed, and absolutely not curious.

---

-I've frequently been viciously attacked, right here in my own thread in my own forum, for liking what I like, and preferring it over what I find inferior -and I can't claim to have been real diplomatic about it- but by God, I actually WHATCHED TNG-DS9-Voyager-Enterprise and know what I'm talking about; I've never perceived that anyone giving me down the road for feeling strongly about real Star Trek had actually watched all of it.  They all say "cheesy special effects" w/o having watched a second of contemporary shows like Lost In Space, and ignorant, like stupid, is hard to argue down, not least because ignorant, like stupid, don't know when it's lost an argument, and that w/o the excuse of being incurable...

Green1 used to always call me a bittervet about most any fandom issue I spoke up on -Green being Green, not really an attack- and maybe the truth hurts, but -and none of this passage is directed at you, Blake- I'd point out for the Vishniacs who wander by that the last new thing I saw was '09, and not having seen Beyond-STD-Picard, I'm not real inclined to chip in on those discussions.  -I'm ignorant, and uninterested in subjecting myself to the pain of curing it...

I just needed to get that off my chest.

I think part of the problem is though some of us have WATCHED it all, we didn't LIVE it all.  These shows are very much products of their time.  So, myself having been a teen through TNG (which is HORRENDOUS for a few seasons) and DS9. Falling for the DS9 is as much of a product of it speaking to me as it is me finding it having better/worse effects.  (mostly Garak (spelling))

OG Trek doesn't speak to me on the same level.  I can appreciate it on some critical level, but it's never going to be my favorite.

It's like Twilight Zone.  I will always favor the 80's run.  I fully recognize that the OG series is BETTER, but the 80's run is what I EXPERIENCED, so it's what I'll always like best.  Especially the creepy ass vampire episode....

Like the joke that the Golden Age of (comics, Dr. Who, etc.) is when you were 12.  Good point.

(-Like, new Battlestar Galactica was maybe a better show -Olmos>Green- but looked to me like they'd said everything they had to say in the miniseries and spent the entire series aimlessly screwing along, and lost something w/o the daggets and ambrosia and socialites, which, though lame, were attempts at actual science fiction, not the Americans in Space of the remake.  I'll never be able to evaluate them out of the order I saw them in, and it's tough to untangle the 12 from the remake getting boring...)

Well if it makes you feel any better Busters Uncle.. I grew up watching the TOS films and TNG so naturally it wasn't long before I got my hands on the original series and watched them all.. and I ENJOYED IT! Plus people shouldn't whinge about the effects these days as we've got the lovely remastered HD versions of TOS.

Anyway.. I guess its time for my Episode 10 rant lol..

I needed some noise in the background the other day and threw on DS9.  It really struck me.

My holy hell how difficult they made the job of the poor actors on these shows.  Odo's makeup is TRULY AWFUL.  As in planet of the apes level bad.  Oh, no, it's perfectly fine for his more stoic act for 90% of the series but he has absolutely NO ability to emote.  Freaking credit to René Auberjonois for ever being able to convey emotion with what nearly boils down to a hockey mask.

Ferengi are just as bad.  The Cardassians fair a tad bit better.

While ship porn holds up fairly well, the rest of the effects are really dated.

Well, Odo's makeup is bad on purpose. ;)
