Yang AAR
« on: September 26, 2013, 02:48:04 AM »
I usually play as the Gaians but thought I would try a different faction for a first AAR and perhaps do a second AAR as the Gaians after I have had some practice.  Please feel free to comment and include suggestions if I am missing something of interest.

Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang

Settings: SMAC from GOG.  Standard rules including blind research, custom random map with all settings set to average, and thinker level difficulty.

2100-2105
Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang and his followers had survived the landing on planet after the events which led to the formation of seven factions and the abandonment of Unity.

Immediately after their arrival in the year 2100 the Chairman’s followers established their first colony, aptly named The Hive.  Although it was not clear which, if any, of the others had survived planetfall Chairman Yang was determined to build a utopia for humanity on their new home world.  Yang would work to advance the collective interests of all and maintain order among his own followers and attempt to steer any other surviving groups to the correct path of human development.

Directing research towards colonization and populaiton growth Yang set out to populate and explore the new world.  A nearby pod containing a mysterious alien artifact was uncovered by scouts and dispatched to the hive for further study, while a investigation of a second pod indicated an additional source of nutrients near The Hive.  By 2105 a second colony was established near The Hive and would benefit from a nearby monolith.

2106-2110
The discovery of Centauri Ecology and a mining pod were both helpful although the mines are out of working range of People’s Endeavour.

2111-2120
Further scouting uncovered a borehole cluster northeast of The Hive.  A colony pod has been dispatched to take advantage of the discovery while a second pod will benefit from the mines.  Scouts are in short supply and colonists are generally being sent out to found new colonies without an escort.

2121-2135
Exploration and colonisation are going well.  All but one of the new colonies were lucky enough to be next to a monolith which is very useful.  So far no colony pods have been attacked.

2136-2151
In 2136 contact was made with followers of the Peacekeepers to the northeast.  Despite a degree of mutual suspicion a Treaty of Friendship was signed and four technologies were traded on even terms.  With the discovery of Secrets of the Human Brain (3 years after the University) 2136 yielded 5 new technologies.

Having digested the capabilities of the new technology Yang encouraged the formation of a police state with a planned economy in the year 2140.  The changes to the Hive’s governance would allow for the further development of the collective good and advance the interests of the workers.  Lal will probably not be too happy with that.  New research will now take about 29 years.

In 2146 communications were established with Lady Deirdre.  Three technologies were traded and a Treaty of Friendship signed.

By the fiftieth year after arrival on planet the Hive has nearly reached the natural limits, dictated by geography, of expansion and with the founding of one additional colony has reached a stable form.  Roads now link several bases.  With colonisation largely complete Yang’s followers shift their attention to transforming their landscape and developing their society.  The additional support from the new police state will allow each base to support two scouts and two formers without consuming minerals allowing for quick terraforming and some security from the native life.

The Gaians to the north.

2152-2160
In 2155 sunspots disrupted communications.  Most likely a good thing as the Peacekeepers might not too happy with me.  In 2160 Wealth was adopted further boosting the Hive’s industry.  New research now takes 14 years.

2161-2180
People’s Endeavor completes the Virtual World in 2174 and the following year The Hive finishes the Merchant Exchange.  Building the Merchant Exchange in The Hive will avoid the ineffiency that would waste energy if it was anywhere else.  If Yang goes builder this could be useful for making crawlers to harvest energy from boreholes for The Hive, especially if Yang is able to get the Supercollider or the Theory of Everything in The Hive.  In 2178 the Hive gains the technology to build network nodes and put the Virtual World to use.  By 2180 breakthroughs have fallen to 9 years.

2181-2191
In 2187 Deirdre demanded 325 energy credits and refused to accept 160.  Gave 325 as Yang has only scouts and no real military technology (no non-linear mathematics or applied physics).  The following year Drone Mound finished the Maritime Control Centre and nutrient restrictions were finally lifted.

2192-2200
Labour Network finishes the Planetary Transit System in 2193.  Unfortunate that expansion is already more or less finished.   Met the Spartans in 2195, gave Polymorphic Software to them as tribute.  The discovery of Ecological Engineering allows the drilling of boreholes which will keep the formers busy for a long time.

Planetary elections were held in 2199.  Deirdre, Yang, and Lal were all candidates.  Lal had a substantial lead but the Hive’s votes could have elected Deirdre.  Voted to abstain as the Hive and Gaians have a long shared border and it would be better if the Gaians do not have an advantage if we eventually fight.

The terraforming is going well and the continent is starting to fill in nicely.  Yang really needs the tech to build tree farms and to lift energy restrictions.

2201-2210
In 2203 Deirdre demanded that the Hive go to war with the Believers.  Yang refuses and the Gaians declare war on the Hive.  Lal shortly follows suit and it is a two front war.  Yang then called the Believers and the Hive was able to purchase nonlinear mathematics and applied physics.  Contacting Morgan resulted in him issuing demands and a declaration of war when Yang refused.  Zakharov ignored our transmissions.  The following year Yang removed the preference for research into colonisation and population growth and prepared a brief speech on the conflict.

“Comrades we are now at war.  A war that we did not seek but one in which we shall prevail.  The Gaians are jealous of our industrial, social, and environmental accomplishments.  Where have the workers established planet’s greatest forest?  Throughout our homeland of course!  Where was the first Centauri preserve on the planet established?  Our beloved capital The Hive.  The Gaian claims that our planned economy is a threat to the planet are false propoganda.

Of course Morgan and Lal joined Deirdre in her unprovoked aggression.  The Morganite economists saw our achievements so far and knew that their unjust free market economy would inevitably be eclipsed and so they attempt to make us slaves to their system by force.  Lal also now sees the inadequacy of his ideology.  Our strong centralised society has already made progress beyond what would be possible under the directionless wanderings of his so-called democracy.

Fear not for the survival of our state and our beliefs.  We shall fight this conflict risking the fewest lives possible and doubtless we will have a few surprises in store for those planning to uproot our utopia before it fully blooms.  Our industry and unwavering belief in the collective good have already assured our triumph in this conflict.  All that remains is to liberate our fellow workers currently under the rule of our newly exposed foes.”

By 2210 most cities have shifted production to mindworms (to be the main unit of the Hive’s forces since the alternative is units with 4 attack which could be soon obsolete), ships, or probe teams.  In 2210 the Believers have dealt with the Morganites and captured Morgan.

2211-2220
In 2213 the Gaians and Peacekeepers allied.  A Peackeeper loaded transport was caught offshore and destroyed.  In 2219 refused to give technology to Zakharov and the University declared war.  In 2220 People’s Endeavor finished the Xenoempathy Dome which will be very helpful for the lifecycle bonus and faster movement through the fungus on the borders.  Mindworms are in position to move on Last Rose of Summer.

2221-2231
Easily took Last Rose of Summer, the following year the Gaians offered a truce in exchange for the return of the city.  Yang accepted and the mindworms shifted to the east where none of Lal’s forces had made an appearance by land.  UN Planning Authority and UN Humanity Base fell to the Hive’s mindworms by 2231.  It seems that the Peacekeepers have lost a lot of territory to the Believers explaining why the did not launch a land offensive against Yang when the war started.

During the war The Hive built a fair number of crawlers which are mostly working boreholes for 2 energy.  Hopefully energy restrictions will be lifted soon.  The Believers seem to be the main competition for the future with the Gaians a somewhat smaller competitor.  Keeping ahead of the Believers in the technology race should be possible but if they get to airpower first and declare war it could be a problem.  Fortunately the border should be easy to defend against land units.

OOC: I am now caught up with where I am in the game so it might be a little under a week before the next post.

This is really well done and organized, I tip my hat to you.

I like your interpretation of the Hive: Much more communitarian mindset to it... Now I think you are just roleplaying; but your welcome to join the Crimson Comrades. You can read what that's about, and welcome to AC2!

Here is the link if your interested in joining the group.

Thank you both for the comments!

In this AAR (next post hopefully by the end of the week) I am trying to make it possible to cheer for the Hive since they usually end up being one of the main villains.

I will look more into the Crimson Comrades in the next little while (Yang's comments are roleplaying but I am generally on the left).  I had been lurking for a few months and reading your roleplay based on them.

Yes, I found this website by googling alpha centauri.  I had read the alpha centauri related threads on fanfiction and was hoping to find others online.

IC:
2232-2240
In 2233 the Believers and Spartans attempted to repeal the UN Charter, all others opposed or abstained and the attempt failed.

Diplomacy with the Believers indicated that they had Doctrine: Air Power by at least 2236, gave the demanded tech and a small loan to the Believers.  Relations are cooperative although Miriam is the obvious competitor at this stage in the game.  The Hive discovered Doctrine: Air Power in 2238 which will help to even up the military technology balance with the Believers.

2241-2250
Yang has been again left in peace to continue building.  The major developments were fusion and the completion of the Hunter-Seeker Algorithm in People’s Endeavor which could come in handy if Miriam’s forces plan on probing the Hive for technology.

2251-2260
In 2255 the Gaians ended the decades of peace by declaring war on Yang when Deirdre’s demands for fusion technology were rejected and in 2258 the Believers demanded, and received, Superstring Theory.  Hopefully that will avoid a two front war for now.  Yang’s forces are mostly equipped with missile or chaos weapons.

2261-2270
Although Gaian possession of the Neural Amplifier blunted the Hive’s ability to use mindworms newly produced conventional forces seem to be doing the trick.  In 2266 the citizens of Last Rose of Summer were again liberated by the Hive.  The Gaians offered a truce in exchange for providing the Hive with Environmental Economics.  Since energy restriction and the lack of tree farms has been holding back the Hive for too long the deal, and a subsequent Gaian offer of a Treaty of Friendship, were accepted.  The time for new breakthroughs immediately fell from 5 to 3 years.  The year following the establishment of peace sunspots disrupted communications which hopefully means that Yang will not have to deal with his neighbours for a little while.

In 2268 monopole magnets were discovered which will allow the establishment of rapid transport across the Hive.  Hopefully a line can be established between the eastern and western frontiers so that the Hive can quickly move units to a war with either the Gaians or Believers.  Before the end of the decade construction on the first line going east from The Hive had already started.

2271-2280
Yang’s building strategy really picked up speed this decade.  In 2271 Applied Relativity was discovered allowing scientists to push for the construction of the Supercollider in The Hive.  Three years later, with the strong support of Chairman Yang and energy credits from across the Hive, the Supercollider was completed in The Hive.  By good fortune the Hive’s researchers discovered Unified Field Theory in the same year.

2277 and 2278 were less pleasant with an energy market crash, Miriam demanding Unified Field Theory as tribute, and the opening of another conflict with the Gaians when their demands for more of our technology were refused.  Deirdre does not seem to have learned much from the results of the last two conflicts.  Cities across the Hive shift to military production, particularly tachyon rovers, and the Theory of Everything is purchased in The Hive.

With the completion of the Supercollider and the Theory of Everything, as well as the support from crawlers working boreholes for energy, The Hive is responsible for a clear majority of the nation’s research capacity (852/1175 labs).  Infrastructure has also lept forward with the establishment of a maglev line linking the east and west.

The capture of Autumn Grove from the Gaians and the eradication of the Peacekeepers by Miriam’s forces conclude the decade.

2281-2290
The war with the Gaians proceeds well enough.  Occasionally their air force destroys crawlers or formers but nearly always lose the offending aircraft to Yang’s responding forces.  Relations with the Spartans go from bad to worse after we trade the UFT in exchange for 75 energy credits in 2284 and they declare war two years later.  Fortunately things are looking brighter by the end of the decade with the completion of the Longevity Vaccine, Cyborg Factory, and Cloning Vats in 2289.  A global trade pact is signed the following year and the Hive moves to more of a war economy with the abandonment of Wealth in exchange for Power now that we have the Cloning Vats and support costs for the newly produced military units outweigh the benefits of Wealth to the Hive’s industry.

Maglev lines are now expanding into the territory newly liberated from the Gaians.

2291-2300
Deirdre’s capital fell to Yang’s forces but she is still unwilling to accept the outcome of the conflict.  In 2295 Fallow Time is also liberated, along with the Command Nexus and Empath Guild.  Miriam attempted to make it a two front war for Yang earlier in the year by declaring war without even making the traditional demands, but Yang traded Centauri Psi to the Gaians in exchange for a truce after the liberation of Fallow Time.  The shiny new maglev lines make for a very quick switch for the tachyon rovers to go east.  In 2296 a team of heroic volunteers acquired Orbital Spaceflight from the Believers and in the same year Yang called elections for Planetary Governor, a position vacant since Lal’s capture, and won the elections with the support of the Hive’s citizens.  Miriam voted for herself but did not win the support of any of the other leaders.  The Pholus Mutagen was also completed in The Hive.

Shortly after Miriam’s declaration of war Chairman Yang travelled to the eastern terminus of the maglev line for an appearance to be broadcast throughout the Hive.

“Comrades we again find ourselves the recipients of unprovoked aggression.  The Believers have witnessed our accomplishments and begin to sense that the pale promise of heaven following a life of relative misery cannot compete with the earthly workers’ paradise we are now approaching through our collective efforts.  Motivated by their unreasoning zeal they have foolishly attacked the Hive.  As champions of a prosperous and harmonious society for all we will liberate those oppressed by Miriam’s tyranny and take a decisive step towards uniting humanity.

Although the heroics of the crews of our tachyon rovers and the pilots of interceptors defending our cities are very visible reminders of citizens accepting personal risk to advance the collective good we must also remember the efforts all citizens are making to forward our cause.  Workers laying the infrastructure for maglev lines to the frontier and harvesting resources to fuel our progress have also been targeted by our foes and without their efforts victory would escape us.

So far the Hive, with the gentle guidance of your Chairman, has held out against the aggression from our neighbours, eliminated the minor environmental damage from our industry, and brought unmatched prosperity to our society.  Once the Believing menace has been vanquished we will be free to resume our collective efforts to build a utopia for humanity on this planet.”

In 2297 a Believer city was captured and the remains of a partially constructed planetbuster were identified, although no others are known to be under construction in any of Miriam’s other bases.  In 2300 the Weather Paradigm and Citizen’s Defence Force were captured from the Believers.  In the five years of conflict the Hive has so far liberated four cities.

On the research front the Hive is also making great progress with breakthroughs every 2 years against the Believers taking 30 years (labs in the Hive at 1444/turn vs 51/turn by the second fastest researchers, the Gaians).  It looks as though the future will belong to the Hive unless one of the other factions can take or destroy The Hive with its crawlers and technology focused secret projects.

Yang's communitarian and collective side is really showing in this interpretation of him. He also seems much more benevolent in this AAR too. I am liking it though, and its not entirely out of character, Yang is at heart, focused on Collectivism. Not so much Communism, but certainly Collectivist policies.

I agree it is a bit of a departure from his character as a despot in the game, but I was intending to make it easier to hope for the success of Yang and his faction in the AAR.  In his short speeches he could also be speaking to the citizens of opposing factions to weaken their support for the war against his faction.  But don't worry, if the Believers manage to build and use a planetbuster his brutal side will be sure to make an appearance.

Yang to me seems sort of like an "enlightened dictator/despot."

He may be very draconian and even cruel in his sense of punishments, and law, but Yang's flaw; and his good side; is his sense of discipline. Discipline is the main reason he is hated and seen as a tyrant, a man who will take his citizens and brutally experiment on and even torture for his own devices and social engineering, but on the other hand he disciplines his followers in the hopes they become stronger people, which in some regards, they are. His discipline and devotion is what makes him both admirable and repulsive, and its something a lot of Westerners, humanist and individualist minded people, will have trouble grasping at first. But for someone like myself who has grown up in a communalized society and one focused on group mechanics over individual desires, as well as respect through discipline, its easier to understand and even respect him.

Yang is a tyrant, no doubt about it. A ruthless and cold one at that. But he is also a tyrant that has an ambition of improving his followers and in the long term, humanity's well being. Its just his perception of what is good for people is up for debate.
