When I typed "despot" I was thinking of the one word summary given in the faction selection screen and did not mean to brush aside the depth to his character and dismiss him as an entirely 'evil' leader.

I had not considered Yang's character much beyond him having a vision for a what he believes is a better future society (~authoritarian with a command economy) and that he is willing to ruthlessly pursue this goal.  Yang is rational and does not seem to inflict harm/torture unless it has the potential to bring greater benefits.

2301-2311
At the start of the decade Miriam’s tachyon artillery arrived and briefly stalled the advance until reserves could be brought up to eliminate the artillery and Yang’s rovers had time to recover from the bombardment.  Fecundity Tower completed the Nanofactory in 2301 which is very helpful for units recovering from the offensive into Believing territory.

In 2304 the Human Genome Project at Morgan was captured by Yang’s forces, a truce with Sparta signed with no conditions for either side, and The Hive completed the Living Refinery.

By the end of the decade People’s Endeavor finished the Ascetic Virtues and another partially completed fission planet buster was discovered in one of the cities liberated from Miriam.  Yang’s forces are advancing rapidly and although some of Miriam’s forces attempt to counter the offensive they rarely can close quickly enough to engage the Yang’s unarmoured rovers.

2312-2321
Miriam’s forces continue to be driven back and the four formers assigned to construct maglev lines to support the offensive are unable to keep pace.  The Believers do not manage to rally and by the end of the decade Miriam’s remaining supporters have been driven into the sea.  Miriam refuses a truce unless the Hive provides technology as tribute.

In 2315 Thought Control was adopted helping to bolster the war effort and deal with dissent in the recently liberated lands.  The decade concludes the construction of the Network Backbone in The Hive and a truce with Zakharov.

2322-2334
In 2324 Miriam’s final bases fall.  Miriam is captured and punishment begins for her crimes of aggression and lives lost during her war.  Two years later, under the direction of Chairman Yang, the Hive shifts from wartime Thought Control to Eudaimonia.  Costs of industrial production are now reduced by 50%.  The following year the Gaians demand technology and declare war when Yang refuses.  The conflict lasts less then a year with the liberation of Virgin Soil and a negotiated end to the war with the Hive providing a technology for a truce.

Rapid research, fueled by energy from a continental ring of boreholes exploited by The Hive (The Hive is the only city that built crawlers), makes the technological progress required and the remaining energy production allows The Hive to build several secret projects in quick succession.  The Hive builds the Space Elevator (2328), the Voice of Planet (2331), and finally the Ascent to Transcendence (2234).  Both Spartans and Gaians had started on the Ascent when it was completed in The Hive, ending the three century competition between the factions.

Look at any photograph or work of art. If you could duplicate exactly the first tiny dot of color, and then the next and the next, you would end with a perfect copy of the whole, indistinguishable from the original in every way, including the so-called 'moral value' of the art itself. Nothing can transcend its smallest elements.
