...There was an episode of Buffy with an animate ventriloquist's dummy that I thought missed out on a bit of world-building.  He was just a supernatural being who happened to be small, undercover.

I would have established homonculi spirits - so frankensteins, zombies, Talking Tina and evil dummies were really all the same thing taking different forms...  Probably the same thing as poltergeists, too.
