There's at least some of the cartoon, too - most of all I remember of it is a strong use of "Who will save Guinevere" from Camelot (LOVE that show.  Want to play Arthur before I get too old  I would OWN as Arthur, struggling not to do a Richard Harris imitation the whole time) as the melody of the theme music.  Gotta take the time to post all of that I can scrape up, too.

I think this is the pilot movie for the cartoon, or a consolidation or something, and if I've posted it before, it wasn't in this thread where I should have.

Flash Gordon The Greatest Adventure of All (1979)

INCREDIBLY ambitious work for a Filmation action cartoon.  -Their Tarzan was beautiful, but the animation was really low-rent with the constant recycled walking -for just one example- shots, an off-putting habit they sustained from at least as early as Star Trek to at least as late as He-Man - neither of which were nearly as pretty as this and Tarzan.

That only LOOKS sorta like Teela -that's Filmation for you- ISTR it's Princess Aura.

Filmation did the Lone Ranger cartoon that came out around the same time, too.  I don't remember it lasting any longer, or much of anything about it, except a vague sense that it was good, within Filmation limits.

I just did some cursory research, and this ran a second (apparently dumbed-down) season.  And the Steve Holland as Flash B&W stuff was indeed a TV show - I'll be sure to track down and post what I can find.

In the 1970s, several noted directors attempted to make a film of the story. Federico Fellini optioned the Flash Gordon rights from Dino De Laurentiis, but never made the film.[26] George Lucas also attempted to make a Flash Gordon film in the 1970s. However, Lucas was unable to acquire the rights from De Laurentiis, so he decided to create Star Wars instead.[26][27] De Laurentiis then hired Nicolas Roeg to make a Flash Gordon film. However, De Laurentiis was unhappy with Roeg's ideas, and Roeg left the project.[27] De Laurentiis also discussed hiring Sergio Leone to helm the Flash Gordon film; Leone declined because he believed the script was not faithful to the original Raymond comic strips.[28][29] Finally, De Laurentiis hired Mike Hodges to direct the Flash Gordon film.[27]

As I've mentioned several times, Flash Gordon is directly the father of Star Wars, not just a major influence - Darth Vader is actually Flash gone bad, and Luke his son Emperor Ming hadn't hit with an Evil Ray...

Lucas forgetting that was at the heart of what was wrong with the prequels.  Darth Skywalker had been a real hero, and he showed us an unlikable sulky punk instead.
