This is absolute classic stuff, for all its ancient low-budget, many-easy-special-effects-hadn't-been-invented-yet, poorly-acted, poorly-written clunkiness.  As I said in the OP, you'll NEVER really get Star Wars if you haven't watched the 30s Flash Gordon serials.  -This is where it all began.

I just skimmed the whole thread and I'll have to track down working copies of Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe, too.  It's certainly worth doing.  Flash Gordon's trip to Mars seems to still work.
