I take the opposition primarily because the social media sites never promotes an action of positive social change in the environment. The other side tends promote the belief in the ability of social media to provide the lonely with an alternate source of social interaction. The opposition also illustrates the point in the ability of social media to increase the incidence of social, emotional, and personality disorders in the population. What stance does the other members take on the issue?

To the extent that it allows my extended family  ( first cousins and their children ) to remain in touch and share photos even though we are  scattered across this country and into another one, it's a good thing.

I see both sides in action daily. 

I keep in touch with people worldwide easily and simply. 

I use it as a means to keep in touch with the local Halloween crazy folk group, even though I don't really fit in with them, it's a good tool to sell stuff. 

It's proven effective for organizing neighborhood events.  (as effective/different crowd than traditional flyers method)

Helped find a missing child in the neighborhood swiftly. 

My neighbor is neurotic.  Constantly spams seeking approval on FB and gets genuinely depressed if she feels ignored there (why I don't dare unfriend her despite how annoying her spam is). 

I've seen no good come of folks who use it as a political/religious soap box. 


So, I view it as a tool.  It can be used for good or ill, and ultimately will act more as a mirror to society than a driving factor.

Easy for me to turn it off at will. 

I got sick of all the political hate over the past few months, and now from the soar losers of said politics (both sides would have been soar losers, but I am rather surprised at just how hateful it is from the "love em all" party), so I just stopped looking.  Ditto the aunt who just finds and posts 4-6 different dog pictures she found on google images that day.

Good for keeping up with those who I normally wouldn't do so with.


As a HS teacher - it is evil.  Teens just don't have the skill set or maturity to deal with it like adults, and 90%+ of the fights/shootings/etc that happen in my school are tied into social media (instagram is the current favorite, but snap-chat is coming back strong).  Seriously wish parents would teach their kids how to properly use a phone before they give them one... course, most of the parents that have kids in my school are as bad or worse then their teens, so who am I to say.

Basically, think of the worst case water cooler rumor mill.  Now, mix it with instant communication, hot headed teens who have no idea what a fact check is, and a level of maturity that goes hand in hand with multi generational poverty - and you get a true mess.  In the past 2 school years, I know of only 1 actual fight that didn't involve a phone and social media among a 550 odd strong population.  I know also of 2 shooting, 1 stabbing, 1 attempted vehicular homicide and an unknown number of fights but well over 100, 5 of which were serious enough to warrant police action along with state level expulsion.

Great. Not that there aren't problems in my city, it's just that I usually hear more about how they end up, rather than how they originate. If I were a pastor or community organizer in such a community organizer I would strive to find  alternative conflict resolution. Surely they could find a way to resolve some of these things at the free throw line, on the track, or in the boxing ring.

Liberals took out any sport (like boxing) that would "suggest violence or other, physical contact" long long ago.  Cannot let our little ones think that violence is a possible solution to a problem....

THe rest went by by with budget constraints & the charter system.  We have sports, but only hte top % even get to try out for them.  I could ramble on for pages, but it really boils down to the fact that only a few can participate in sports (B football, G volleyball, B & G track and basketball and that is it).  Our track team is capped at 10 boys & 10 girls, and they usually don't have that many by the end of the season due to drop outs and ineligibility.

I sometimes wonder if the whole no tolerance and don't let the kids fight policies don't lead to more escalated violence. 

I remember my principle strapping boxing gloves on me and another kid and telling us to have at it.

It's just so senseless to have one person hospitalized and the other jailed. Shoot it out on HALO or something. At least that way you won't ruin each other's lives or kill any bystanders.

I always found either playing football or working out a great way to release aggression caused by a frustrating day at school. Kept me out of trouble, mostly.

A shoot em up death match just isn't the same as caping some dude for dissing you on snap chat....  gotta see them bleed....

I will say the kids are playing a WHOLE different game with this social stuff than us old nerds. 

We are maybe "too" controlling of parents, but some of the stuff I've seen cross my boy's phones...

Pictures.  Language.  Death threats.  Suicide threats.  Horrendous racism.  It's down right frightening. 

And that's without us letting them on some of the more clandestine apps. 


And my yards going to be gaining a few corpses for the collection if some of that hits my daughter.

THey are worse.  At least in my past 5 years teaching, I have seen far more girls having issues with social media than boys. 

Boys will share picks, and generally just be crude.

Girls will be cruel, heartless, bullies with the intention of causing others to commit suicide.
