I sometimes wonder, how do you determine beforehand how much space you need for facial details?
I imagine so many extra layers (plaster, paper) does a lot to wash out the finer details of a mask.

...That's something I worry about, and a factor in why I tend to make pretty exaggerated-features faces.  The lion face I'm brain-building ATM is mostly challenging for figuring out something that looks like a mane/hair, but w/o a million tiny grooves that I'll never get the mache strips into...

Monster mud to the rescue!

Ditch that, actually, and do Uno mud instead.

Mix latex paint about 60/40 with slush latex.  Dunk fibers of your choice (I'd suggest sisal or jute twine unwound actually) into it and arrange to serve as both the sculpt and it will become the base.  If your're wanting to have it actually be fibrous instead of a sculpt, you can use this to attach the bases to the mache, and the remaining will dry flexible.

Maybe not only the mane can symbolise the lion.
A combination of "Cat nose", two "top fangs" and a "crown" can convey meaning - lion.
I mean, that could be a variant. Don't know easier it or not.

Moving on to the next stage:

-Those ray-groves are too small to work with, BTW.  I'm gonna have to do some fixing in the plaster version of the base, but the last of my plaster was no good for the Moon, and I've been seriously de-motivated for weeks.  I'll post pics getting into all that eventually.

Oh, I do like where that's going.  You've had me a little on the fence up to there.

Strictly as a thing-to-paint, which the mask certainly will be, I really ought to have done the simplest thing and just stopped at a face on a plate - but, y'know, I'm a sculptor who works in faces in cheap mediums, and it was radial groves or triangles.  It took me over a month to decide, and this mostly won for being easier to engineer.

Youre dipping in towards some southwestern sun wall plaque style here.  You probably saw some in Texas, but super popular in Southern utah and Arizona.

Kri'lan taught me of the resonance and how to feel it. After much training, I could see ? the very surface under our feet, Planet itself ? is a living, fluctuating nexus of energy, violent, beautiful and quite unstable. And I could also feel its cousins ? distant mirrors on the other side of the space-time continuum ? the far-flung Manifolds.
