I've been working for most of the last 24 hours on fixing the Frida Kahlo in Love photo gallery page. Mylochka thinks her assistant director/grad/minion, Nkechi -who is proof immigrants can be pure win and awesome; I got to know her a little when I was living in Texas last- used Apple software -boo!- in making the page, and I probably broke it running the file through KompoZer to title it and stuff for the search engines. I'd swear what I first saw off the floppy disk worked for selecting the thumbnail to enlarge, if the page formatting was already broken.

Anyway, broken it was -the thumbnails tiny at 100x75 and in a line scrolling forever off to the right, instead of the grid she clearly intended, and now, the expansion script was stuck on the first pic in line. Also, it only had 41 pics, all from the same early rehearsal, despite there being over 100 in the pic folder. -It also stank a little in not following the design/look of every other page.

I know how to make pics display as thumbnails in a grid, clicking to show full-size on a blank page you have to backbutton on your browser out of -M and I agree that's lame and sucks, but it's what I could do for a gallery, and she said to go ahead and do it- and I ended up re-making the photo gallery page from scratch. There was something screwing with the grid layout I was substituting, probably leftover Apple script I couldn't find.

In addition to the page working, within the limits of my finite tech skills, the thumbnails are nearly twice as big, and there are a LOT of pics now added from other than just that one rehearsal, including a painting session and a performance - 92 in all. It was grinding work, mostly, once I'd figured out what and how. It beat the hell outta me how to get half-Frida up against the left side like the other pages, so I did what I could until I realized Front Page is better for that kind of precision stuff this afternoon. -Then I had to put back page arrangements Front Page broke, and neither Front Page nor KompoZer displayed the change, so I didn't know it worked until I uploaded the file and saw it on the browser.

However, work it did, looks great, puts half-Frida back like the other pages, and the pic selection is an infinitely better representation of what went into making the show - Also, none of the paltry few pics with masks were in there before.

Added two pages to the Frida website today - consistent with the design of the rest, which are made of finicky joined graphics bits that I dare not touch, lest gaps happen. These didn't need extra room like the mass of photos, so both have the content in frames and working. I didn't think this would work, but it did. I also figured out what font was used on the buttons in place, and how to do the drop shadows, so everything matches, including updates to the JKStudio linkback button and the Home button at the bottom of the photo gallery page.

I'm fixing to add the fancy photos M took the other day of the surviving masks to the photo gallery...

I've added a coming soon page stub for something M intends to put together about the Frida Kahlo paintings, poems and letters she built the show around. I also made suitable versions and put the other buttons at the bottom of the gallery.

M allegedly took photos of a bunch of finished mask this morning, but came down with a bad case of storm brain this afternoon, so nothing's been processed yet.

While scanning in Frida Kahlo paintings for Mylochka Friday -no net, no Google Images- I lucked into some mask pics on Momma's computer that I didn't have.

-One day, about 12 years ago, I was told Buster wanted a cat mask. Her cat was black, and I painted this myself, and sewed in the whiskers and coated them in black latex...

Mylochka tried something with two devil halfmasks and some spraypaint Friday; I don't know what she was shooting for -she said she was trying something, but not what- but I don't think it worked out, 'cause nothing else has happened.

So this is how I kept sane, once I resolved to Sunday.

Johnhotep is a nice design, but flawed and difficult to work with - I had such excellent results with casting the problematic Mars Face in plaster and smoothing, that I always intended to try it with this.

That's, like, nine layers on the sides, two of them color Sunday comics printed on oddly heavy-grade paper, and it feels really stout. Two more layers of latex lining, and I should get a cast made tomorrow...

Really - it's okay to comment and let me feel like anyone cares...

Mylochka produced the video of painting a reproduction of Frida Kahlo's "Self-Portrait with Monkeys -1943" on her garage wall, and it has been duly posted on YouTube.

So how does this compare with "knitting" chain mail? Do you ever cut yourself on one of the multitude of paper edges? Does one craft clear your head more than the other? Or make you feel more productive?

I'm liking this Johnhotep mask. I'm impressed by the asp, I'm diggin' the eye relief and the headdress/ base. I liked the Mars mask, too.

Well, chainmail is more physical labor - it's heavy. Dunno, it's durable, so you can take it places, and people are really impressed. I had callus on my right -whatever you call the finger next to the pinkie- so thick you wouldn't believe in the mid-90s. You ultimately can't do that many different things with it, everything takes forever, and I certainly aren't interested in knitting w/o a TV to half-watch during. No papercuts so far with the mache.
