I'm thinking/hoping the horns are ready for a test drive.

Here's the deal:  I wasn't that thrilled with how the Serious Devil came out, somehow.  So, two ideas behind this.  1.) Horns with a lot more pizazz - that will, incidentally, stand out more in photos.  2.) Done as a facial appliance like this, I think I can get it to turn to let the curve of the horns slide out of the mask smoothly enough.  It certainly wouldn't be workable if the horns were part of the base, what with the chin and nose both fighting it coming off turning that way.  I'm researching a little mask-making science, and I'm eager to see it work.

I'm certainly hoping the latex coat is thick enough, and I don't have to mess with that for this no more...

I wasn't sure this would work.

-But the nose gave me considerable more fight, demasking, than the new horns.  Woo.  So, a fifty-Lal post, because we are committed to doing our best for you.

I saw that the devil half-mask had West Nile Virus.

I plan to mask the Mars Face today, if I'm not too tired after the dentist and depending on the new comics...

Looks like I definitely AM getting to this today.  The mood just came on me.

   

That's the first layer done, and the beginning of the second.  I have to get my shoes on and go to my appointment, now, alas.

Got another coat of latex on Dixie before I resumed mache-ing, while my hands were clean.  I've been doing some subtle shaping, letting the latex build up ridges in some key places.  I won't jinx it predicting a time range for completion, but the coating is getting a bit thick...


So, I hate to have denied everyone the glory of a future back-pic of the mask w/ a polychromatic circus-y construction paper interior, but I saved the colorful stuff for the second layer.  This damn thing has fought me the hardest of any face I've ever crafted, taken forever in time and labor and kept messing up; I don't trust it, and I'm casting a backup base in plaster in the first mask.  I can sand off those ripples on the south end of the space helmet, get it closer to the size I want, and so on.  -So I started with plain newsprint for a more regular interior, sorry. 

On the definite upside, we'll get an interior photo posted tomorrow that Rusty can also read.

Despite the size, this is a lot easier to mache on than the devil mask.  The double curve of the sides of the space helmet are tougher to get a strip laid over w/o wrinkles than you might think, but then I'm getting away with hugely wide strips.

Layer three.
