The D'Artagnan, yes - I didn't say anything had been finished and released.

Somebody a page or two later had a credible "do you know who I am?" con story on Gerrold.  All I know is that he cheated me and lied to me - and the tribbles being copyrighted was an unethical exploitation of Heinlein's kind waver, if not Gerrold's fault.  It was certainly ungracious of him, to say the least, to exploit it, considering.

Considering that I read about the D'Artagnan on the Valjiir website, something must have been finished and released... the story clearly states that Kirk named his ship  Lincoln, Spock chose Enterprise, and Sulu wanted D'Artagnan but suggested other outrageous names first, so Starfleet would be relieved that "D'Artagnan" was relatively "normal" and let him have it.

Are you talking about some project other than fanfic that's been available on the website for ages now?

The year I met David Gerrold, the other GoH was Frederik Pohl. Between the two of them, I preferred meeting Pohl. I think he appreciated that the book I asked him to sign was his own autobiography, rather than the umpteenth copy of one of his novels.

Some project other than fanfic that's been available on the website for ages now, yes.

I can't make the woman finish writing - I've done what I can to help.  -Actually, it could have been Drake, or something.  Is The Drake anything Sulu might have commanded in Valjiir?  (Whoever came up with Sulu naming a ship D'Artagnan ;b; clever.)

...I'm just talking about one particular half-written story - set in the --- Nest Ships era? --- and we discussed a subseries of stories where Sulu's command is sent around doing follow-ups on a number of planets where Kirk wrecked everything up beating the bad guy, because Sulu (and his ship) was available and he had been there the first time...

Between most of the kicking around story ideas/details took place a couple years ago, and I haven't read much Valjiir, I'm afraid to give any details I DO remember and spoil it before it's even had a beginning finished.

Remember, I'm someone who's been following this series since the print 'zine days, and I still have most of the 'zines I bought from Intragalactic Underground Press when the early Valjiir stories were published in In a Different Reality. I've seen how some stories have either been changed or fleshed out since appearing online. And I'm very glad to finally know who Terry was - after 30+ years!  :D

"Drake" would be a reference to the story in which some crew took part in an experiment where they could pretend to be historical figures while in some kind of dream state. Jilla chose to be Queen Elizabeth I and Sulu was Sir Francis Drake.

A series of stories in which Sulu goes around cleaning up Kirk's messes sounds like fun, and I would enjoy those very much.

I'd also enjoy more of the alternate Shadow Captain series Cher started - in which Spock, Ruth, Sulu, and Jilla resign from Starfleet so they can search for Kirk on their own - and discover what a challenge it is to do that while making a non-Starfleet living.

Must be D'Artagnan, then - something starting with a D sounds right.  I know what plot's been decided and who's in the story, more or less, but am not the one to ask about where it all fits, really - that's not the part of it I was helping kick around.

I don't know that exactly cleaning up Kirk's messes is right - I think some of the places he wrecked up turned out great like he said they would - just, all of them faced serious challenges in the major upheavals, and nice opportunity for Sulu and that crew of characters to have adventures together touring the places and give our take on details about how the old society worked and the new one does.

(What would a Federation team DO with all those Nazis?  Y'know?)

It's an honored science fiction trope, after all; touring the space thing.  It works, and makes a virtue of nerd pedantry to create the thing (fill in more details and make sense of it, in this case) and then have adventures there as a setting.  (Dune is about Dune as much as it is about Paul and so on, after all.)  Mylochka has some neat character stuff in the one half-done...

The pro novels addressed the situations in "Miri" and "A Private Little War."

I forget if it was supposed to be a novel or fan film meant to address "Conscience of the King." I don't spend a lot of time in the TrekLit forum, since most of the talk is about books I won't ever read or involve authors whose stuff I refuse to buy. I'm easily 15 years behind, and at this point I haven't the funds, bookshelf space, or even interest to keep up.

Greg Cox hinted he's writing a novel about Robert April, though, so that's something to look forward to. No hints on whether it has anything to do with "The Counter-Clock Incident."

As for the "fill in more details"... I've done that with Fighting Fantasy. When I was doing my Scorpion Swamp novelization project, I figured that the King's Highway was a bit light on towns and villages, particularly when most of the population is on foot, so I created a couple of new ones.

BTW - GSchnitzer gave out a credible-sounding account of what happened to delay the release of Kitumba for four years - TL;DR is, Vic Mignogna did a "nice cut" of the episode, James Cawley wanted a few changes, reserving the right to final cut as he does, and Mignogna wouldn't budge or hand over the raw footage needed for Cawley's version.  GSchnitzer says he was eventually able to broker some deal, but hard feelings remain...

Stumbled over this this afternoon:  http://shatnerstoupee.blogspot.com

-Surprisingly, it's not a comedy crap-on-Shat site, like Church of the One-Toupeed Shatner.  Just serious examination of a lot of old pictures, many ST, and quotes from the nineties run of ST memoir books...

So Leonard Nimoy intentionally told her to project all the likeability of a cardboard box.

O-kay... I wonder if any of them ever realized that this is precisely why not many people liked this version of Saavik? I was reading Interstat, a letterzine, back then. One of the letter writers called Robin Curtis an "ugly, talentless actress."

Well, okay. She's rather pretty in this video. Terrible stammering problem. But I still agree with the letter writer on the other assessment.

If ugly means didn't look like the same character Kirsty Alley played, she was hideous.  -Otherwise, no, ugly was absolutely not the problem.

It is odd to think that Nimoy, who often played Spock as anything but calm under a thinly-assumed veneer of coldness, wanted the utterly flat-of-affect performance Curtis delivered - which simply was not the same character from the previous movie.

I cannot blame Curtis for being miscast, y'know; a gig's a gig.

Obviously the word "ugly" was one person's opinion. I do stand by my opinion that Kirstie Alley made a hell of a better Saavik. Alley-Saavik had personality. Curtis-Saavik had none.

It could be that Nimoy may not have liked the "half-Romulan" aspect of Saavik and so directed her to play a full-Vulcan woman.

It failed. Even T'Pring had more personality.

Just so.

I didn't like a single thing about that movie, and she was one of those things.

50th Anniversary Art Exhibition Revealed
StarTrek.com Staff  March 22, 2016

“Star Trek: 50 Artists. 50 Years,” a new art exhibit created to commemorate Star Trek’s 50th anniversary, will feature Star Trek-inspired works by 50 artists from 10 countries around the globe, including one by Leonard Nimoy, the franchise’s iconic Spock and a renowned photographer. The exhibit will include original 2D and 3D pieces by the artists, who selected a variety of mediums -- illustrations, photographs, sculptures, paintings, graphics and more -- to express their love of the franchise and the inspiration gained from it.

The global art exhibition will debut at Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts in San Diego’s historic Gaslight Quarter during Comic-Con, from July 21-24. Among those contributing to the collection are digital artists Joshua Budich, Rocco Malatesta, Tom Whalen, sculptor Calvin Ma, the United States Postal Service, and Leonard Nimoy.

Star Trek 50 Artists 50 Years Art Exhibition - Joshua Budich

Joshua Budich, whose piece is called “To Boldly Go,” is an independent illustrator working for numerous galleries, among them Gallery 1988, Spoke Art and Hero Complex Gallery, as well as movie studios and media outlets all over the world. Inspired by a love for the pop culture of his youth, Budich’s primary focus is on screenprints that celebrate popular movies, live-action television series, animated shows and more.

Star Trek 50 Artists 50 Years Art Exhibition - Rocco Malatesta

Rocco Malatesta, represented in the exhibit by “50 – Live Long and Prosper,” is an Italian freelance illustrator whose work often captures pop-culture imagery from movies and television, and frequently encompasses alternate posters. Malatesta, who currently lives in Germany, decided at age 13 that he’d make his living as a graphic designer and through hard work, talent and perseverance, he’s done precisely that.

Star Trek 50 Artists 50 Years Art Exhibition - Calvin Ma

Calvin Ma, whose exhibit contribution is “Home Is Where The Journey Is,” hails from San Francisco and still lives there today. A sculptor who utilizes the action-figure form in his sculptural work in order to explore personal struggles with social anxiety, he has won numerous awards, including 1st Place at the City of Brea Art Gallery’s ACGA National Clay & Glass Exhibition, and has been represented at more than 40 exhibitions and solo shows.

Star Trek 50 Artists 50 Years Art Exhibition - US Postal Service

The United States Postal Service is represented by “Star Trek Commemorative Stamps,” designed by The Heads of State, a/k/a Jason Kernevich and Dustin Summers. As co-creative directors, they've created award-winning posters, book covers, branding and illustrations for a diverse and impressive list of clients. They lecture frequently about their work and process and teach graphic design and illustration at Tyler School of Art, where they both studied.

Star Trek 50 Artists 50 Years Art Exhibition - Leonard Nimoy

Leonard Nimoy, who contributed the piece “Hand in Vulcan Gesture,” was an actor, writer, producer, poet, host, patron of the arts and Star Trek’s iconic and beloved Spock. But he was also accomplished lifelong photographer who published several books of his photography and exhibited at galleries and museums worldwide. His three acclaimed books of photography were titled "Secret Selves", "The Fully Body Project" and "Shekhina." “Hand in Vulcan Gesture,” his piece for the exhibit, is a haunting, multi-color depiction of the Vulcan salute that rings particularly poignant given his passing in February 2015.

Star Trek 50 Artists 50 Years Art Exhibition - Tom Whalen

Tom Whalen, who contributed “U.S.S. Enterprise Spec Sheet,” is an illustrator and designer whose work has been seen on comic book racks, gallery walls, department store shelves and in magazine spreads. He is known for crafting his illustrations with a strong sense of design and has an instantly recognizable graphic style.

Star Trek fans can see the names of all 50 artists contributing to the exhibit, as well as learn more about the artists referenced above at StarTrek50Art.com.

Following the San Diego premiere, “Star Trek: 50 Artists. 50 Years.” will beam to Star Trek Las Vegas in August and the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto from mid-August to early September, before heading to the UK for the Destination Star Trek Europe convention in October and continuing its worldwide tour through August 2017.

Beyond the traveling exhibit itself, the artwork featured in “Star Trek: 50 Artists. 50 Years.” will be represented in a consumer products collection that will be available at retail following its debut in July. Elements will include an eye-catching coffee table book from Titan Publishing and calendars from Rizzoli that are now available for pre-order, as well as trading cards, apparel, accessories, glassware, posters, stationery and prints.

More than 20 partners are on board and they will offer products set to roll out across the US, Europe, Canada, Australia and other territories around the world.

Keep an eye on StarTrek50Art.com in the coming weeks for ongoing reveals of other pieces in the exhibit.
