when did math TERMINOLOGY change?

Seriously, both my boys are bringing home what may as well be another language.  It's not that I don't remember how to DO whatever, it's that when they ask me a question, they're calling things TOTALLY different  than I was taught.

Would you please give some examples of how you think there has been a supposed change in math terminology? Perhaps someone might be able to help "interpret" this different language.

I don't even remember what it was last night, terminology wise.  We've had a couple of them come home that are just odd.  The problem is they are into mathematics where there's multiple means of coming to the answer, I have to decipher WHICH they are supposed to be doing.  Apparently I told Alec the shorthand method of what they were doing last night when they want them learning the long way first. 

Send home some examples then as far as I'm concerned.

I keep telling you I'm more mechanic than engineer.  The engineers don't have to get dirty.  I did send a note last night saying I wasn't sure which method they were after.  He got to stay in and work it the long way today.

So, BU, opinion:  Is that candleman feasible?  (like first 30 seconds is all you need to see)

I bet it has something to do with show all your work and all of the steps that are involved to get there. That is probably why they do not want the shorthand version of it. I personally think that yes, a student should know how to do a concept the long way first but teachers should explain before hand if they want the work done the long way. I have had some bad experiences with math were they wanted it done the long way but I did it the short way because the work did not explicitly say that it needed to be completed using a specific set of steps .

It's tough.  You'd have to fake most of it with lights, PVC and hot glue drippings to make something durable enough to move around in.  A few actual lit candles arranged so they can't fall off easily and can be easily replaced when they do, but mostly faked, and mighty heavy no matter.  Plan to work in a stout chinstrap somehow - maybe by building a medieval peasant hood into it under the hat.

Can't possibly be heavier than the beast I wore back in '08. 

Thinking I could hot glue most of it to build up and make them look bigger, but votives for the candles?  Combined, that should keep the weight down.
If I combined it with a mask, the chin strap wouldn't matter.  I mean, that plague doctor of last year I was STRAPPED IN tight.  Question would be what mask to go with...
