Heh. One can see at least one of the airhoses in the 'tentacles'.

presuming it's operating how such things usually do all the moving ones are actually air hoses, they just didn't disguise the one well.  Turns out they essentially have 3 models they dress with the various props.

The vine whipping, the 'floating' mechanism I'm interested in, and a static version.  I'm 90% sure the floating mechanism is just a higher quality of the one I made here.

That got abandoned as that motor was too weak and the random junk used to make the linkages wouldn't hold up, but reasonably confident I can get that to work for this project if I put the budget into it.

Found it.  Beastcraft Props.

Hard to believe this wasn't based off Cropper...

I'm sure there's a good workaround for the sound it makes - hissing is fine for a weird monster - but it does sound like exactly what it is.

Probably, one would at least turn the air pressure way down.  Movement of the tentacles is what's desired, not necessarily whipping around energetically.

...In fact, I'd recommend making the tentacle tubes for something like him largish diameter, and of light cloth-ish material- at low pressure, you go for an inverted carwash man effect...

Original Cropper.  There wasn't anything even close to that at the time.

Don't want to jinx anything, but looking like a half decent water year here.  No, this won't end the drought.  We'd need something like 5 years of this straight if I remember the last study I read correctly.  More curious how much it will impact the threat of the Great Salt Lake disappearing within the next 5 years (yes, that's a fear)

Heh, cool.  Didn't realize the graphic I posted would stay updated.  For those playing at home I live right at the fork in the freeways south of Ogden in the weber/ogden section.

Duschesne (Do Shane) and NE Uintahs feed Flaming Gorge.  Everything south of that feeds Lake Powell.

They be predicting (insert booming sound effect) EPIC STORM to hit beginning tonight.  As in ~2/3-3/4 an entire annual average worth of snow between now and Thursday.  IF the Bear River area can get up into the 180-200% off this storm, it will go a long way to saving the GSL for a few more years.

When was that that you last read a study correctly?

There's a feedback loop in place.

The great salt lake contributes 5-10% of the snow in the mountains.  Lowered lake volume = less snow = lowered lake volume.

Last year the lake hit a record low.   I was alive and actually witnessed first hand since my dad was working on the causeway (railroad track across the lake) at the time of the record high in 1986.  It's been kind of crazy to witness the wild change in the lake first hand.

GSL is a near unique thing, and surely important to local culture by 100 years ago.  Be a pity to see it go away.

I've read that the southwest was going through something like a 10,000 year high on moisture about the time US-people settlement got into high gear.  God was merciful, in a way, sustaining it so long if so, but if it was that extreme an outlier, wow, bad news for everyone.

Just read up a bit on GSL.
Looks like there's a great variance in the salt percentage over time. UnO, do you remember, back in the eighties, if you could float on the lake without sinking? I imagine if the lake's at it greatest extend/maximum volume, it has the lowest salt percentage, and 5% salinity doesn't sound enough to float on the surface like in de Dead Sea.

I didn't try.  The GSL isn't exactly a recreation hotspot.  Famously they would do that at Salt Aire on the southern arm of the GSL back in black and white film days.  It burned down before I was born, and the rebuilt version isn't exactly known for swimming, more of a concert venue.  In the 80s, my time was spent at Lakeside (a railroad company town, might even be a ghost town by now) on the west end.  I loved crawling the shore for salt crystal formations.  When we went to the spiral jetty (north arm of the GSL) a few years ago, those were entirely lacking. The causeway flooded in 84, and part of the rebuild was adding some passages to stabilize both the water levels and salt levels between the two halves of the lake.  That said, there's a mineral harvesting plant at the northeast end that's probably responsible for some salinity loss as well.

That's not farms, that's mineral harvesting off the GSL, and those be evaporation pools.

Depending on whether Alec shoveled when he got home or not, we got 6-8" at our place with another 4-6 predicted by noon.  10-12" is a good storm.  Looks like another storm coming Friday.

The ski resort up the hill from my front door is reporting 18" so a decent idea how much was rain before it turned to snow at my place.

And so we return again to the holy void. Some say this is simply our destiny, but I would have you remember always that the void EXISTS, just as surely as you or I. Is nothingness any less a miracle than substance?
