I believe that was the first of the 'monsterverse' Godzilla's that culminated in the vs Kong one. 

All the Monsterverse movies are in a kinda weird spot for me.  It's kind of like the Ring movies, there's something that straight up does not translate to Hollywood with these Japanese properties, but the American versions are enjoyable in their own right once you get past that, coupled with the lack of bad dubbing or subtitles almost makes them equal but not quite. 

I think the sequel to this one is the strongest amongst the Monsterverse films, and felt the most 'godzilla', but it's been a long time since I watched them so I may have them flipped. 

It's worth it to build up to Godzilla vs Kong for a big dumb kaiju fight film presuming one enjoys such things.

What was that old movie where the giant kaiju monster, a hairy anthropoid with no lips, scooped up a woman, popped her in his mouth and spit out her dress?  Godzilla OUGHT to be scary, and isn't.  The business I mention IS - and creepy as hell.

I'm 90% sure you're talking about one of the Japanese "Frankenstein" films from the 60s. 

Either Frankenstein Conquers the World or Frankenstein Monsters (insert name vs insert name)

Kaiju Frankenstein is what I think of with 'no lips' anyway. 

More "Frankenstein" from the sequel where they make a 'good' frankenstein to stop the 'bad'.

I suppose Godzilla '14 is too scary to show to a 7yo, huh?  Looks like it from the IMDB parents' guide ...

Well, THAT question always depends on the kid but IMO it's VERY mild PG13.  There's lots of implied violence, but most of the SHOWN violence is actually the Kaiju duking it out, or the army shooting the Kaiju.  It's very much FANTASY violence.  If you'd let them watch Star Wars, this is fine.  Yeah, ok, Godzilla rips the head off the other monster.  Lukes parents are burned to a crisp with gruesome charred corpses shown and Obi is whacking limbs off in a bit of gore in the first act.  I'll stand by that comparison. 

Language is playground level swears.  No sex/maybe some kissing.  No drugs. 

And, no, I wouldn't rate anything on there FRIGHTENING.  Especially to that age group.  More cool monsters fight yay!  I believe you end up rooting for Godzilla in that one (most of them, really).

THAT SAID, they do wax on with the fake science jargon for stretches in these films, there's some family drama that might be sensitive to certain kids, and the kid might get bored since it really tries to be serious.  Again, depends on the kid there too much. 

I know it's stupid, but my litmus test for kids that age is Little Shop of Horrors.  It's bright, it's catchy music, and the second that thing snaps at Seymore's hands, they either get hooked are lose interest because it's scary.  I've yet had a kid get nightmares over it, but a fair few learn to like horror as a result.

We wound up watching Master & Commander yesterday instead.  Fast-forwarding through the surgeries so they didn't listen to gagged screaming.  They were bored at some points, but no nightmares.

Coraline.  You should try Coraline with them.  Nice horror cartoon.  See if that gives them nightmares. 

A lot of people will recommend Gremlins to which I like to warn parents be advised it drops the Santa secret in a horrific way. 

Jaws is classic PG horror. 

The 80's (late 70s?) version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a great PG introduction to horror, for when they're ready to start dealing with some nightmare fuel instead of just avoiding.

We're a plague house at present so I went ahead and watched Godzilla with the kids.  There wasn't a whole lot of Godzilla in that movie and when he did appear it was usually so dark onscreen I had a hard time telling what he (or the MUTO monsters) was doing.  It might have been window glare, IDK.  I'm assuming both of the other monsters died at some point but I only definitely saw one get atomic-breath right down the gullet.  Bryan Cranston was excellent as he pretty much always is; he should have stuck around.  His soldier kid was boring and I did not care about his generic wife and kid.

Verdict: monster movie needed more monsters, and visible.  Still so much better than the Matthew Broderick version.

Kinda curious when this come out in relation to Cloverfield now.  Cloverfield got some praise for being the monster movie that doesn't show the monster...

Godzilla gets more screen time in the sequels.

Lifting something at work, and felt a pop in my ankle.

I'm experiencing pain in 2 places.  there's a constant pain under the cuboid and 5th metatarsal area, and a pain behind the bottom of the fibula when I walk that reaches from the calcaneous up to my middle calf. 

Dr _______:  "the cuboid and the Metatarsal are nowhere near each other.  The cuboid is in the ankle and the metatarsal is in the foot.  So, which is it?"

Wonder if you sprained your Achilles tendon. Did it swell? Did you get an x-ray, or are you just taking the rest, ice, and Aleve approach?
