Just a little fun taking requests project to a) provide you with custom smilies you may be able to talk me into installing and b) give me (and Jarlwulf and any other artists who like) some quick art projects to play with.
Any requests?
-
I miss the red-hat smilies over at 'poly. They could be run December 21 - March 21 as Winter smilies.
I don't have any bright ideas for new emotes.
-
There ain't a  smilie on the forum yet, isn't it?

My only reservation about doing that at least in December would be that we got at least one serious Jew and any number of atheists among the membership. We could probably do something with individual smilie sets, so nobody has to look at Christmas hats for a month if they care - but I'd need sisko's help, because the smilie interface is confusing when it comes to sets and installation...

We do not in the ones I'm set to see. Wouldn't be a big job to animate. I'll try to get on that later today.

As a resident atheist, I would not be offended with such smily's or religious symbolism. We could always put a smily with Star of David on it or the 12 Candles for Jewish celebration, and a Crescent for Ramadan celebration or something similar.
-
I agree. Our SMF forum software gives users the option of choosing which of several sets we have installed displays for them - I (and you, too, Jarl - I could teach you how) could make custom sets and install them for holiday options. We've certainly got plenty of lead time. I imagine getting the line-up that goes over the reply box ought to suffice; the zoo in the popup would be a bit much.
-
Also: ;nod
Geo, you suggested a classic I wish I'd thought to do long ago, so I went ahead and installed it. It didn't take but about 15 minutes to make.
-

Perhaps; I already make forum decors and avatars and such, so it wouldn't be too much a stretch.

Also: ;nod
;b;
How about redrawing the ;cute smilie to fit better with the other basic smilies qua size and such.
-
No sweat.

Done. This one took a bit longer, but I do like it better this way. I attach both versions for comparison. (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7298.0;attach=9251) (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7298.0;attach=9252) -Now that's even cute enough for Kilkakon; and it's wearing no pants, too.
To be clear, everyone, Geo's getting a lot of cooperation because he's asking for fairly universal smilies and/or improvements of same; the kind of thing I figure many will like requires no persuasion. Good for our community is good. Now, I'm also inclined to grant any request within reason and forum decorum just because the member wants it enough to use up a free pass to get it.
I love you guys, AC2 needs you, and I'm motivated to work at keeping you happy. Also - I just like doing small art jobs.
-
Is even bigger pupils overkill, or should I install this revision?
(http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7298.0;attach=9252) (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7298.0;attach=9253)
-
I like former better. Other looks like it was stuck in a dark hole for 19 weeks and is adjusting eyes.
-
Yeah, the first revision was better.
-
And where's my attaboy for the first revision? :P You like?
Jarl, make us a Russian Bear whomping all challengers and being the hero of the world. :D
-
;cute.
Okay, it's still the good one running the show. :)
-
That was definitely a compliment, but -what-?
-
Just testing which ";cute" smilie was running the show, that's all.
In other news, and in light of that 30m telescope article of yours, how about a smilie where ;zak; acts like an excited smilie?
Perhaps an idea would be to link every SMACX leader smilie to an animated 'emotion' like :danc: does atm.
-
But I'd like to state, not the same animation as :danc:
Because if Miriam did something like that I'd be scared.
-
But I'd like to state, not the same animation as :danc:

An old veteran like you? Com'on! ;lol
Of course different emoticons fir each leader, that's the whole purpose.
-
Dancing Lal is just the banana smilie white and w/Lal's head. I'm not inclined to go to all the work to come up with and animate seven different dances, and I can only think of one other dancing smilie to adapt that isn't based on the same banana dance...
-
It needn't be dancing smilies! For instance, Miri could be incorporated as a ;worship smilie!
-
Okay. Keep the ideas coming.
-
An old veteran like you? Com'on! ;lol
Of course different emoticons fir each leader, that's the whole purpose.
There is some things that should not be witnessed by mortal men, Geo :-\
Suggestions:
Rose can be typing/looking at a computer screen.
Domai can be swinging a sledge hammer.
Cha Dawn can be meditating.
Miriam can be praying as suggested.
Diedre can be sort of prancing through a fungal field/prancing
Santiago can be cleaning/loading a gun, or firing one.
Zhakarov can be looking at a glass tubule/chemical tube, examining it or spurting equations.
Yang can be marching or doing some kung fu or something similar.
Morgan can be swimming in money or on a pile of money doing a snow angel/money angel, or throwing cash up into the air.
Svensgard can be on a pirateship standing at the foremast or be looking through a telescope.
Aki Zeta could be rotating a cyborg arm or something, or be doing "The Robot" dance.
Marr can be brandishing some sort of energy sword and swing it a few times, or menacingly rub his hands together like an evil dictator.
H'mnee can be holding a shield in one (hand?) and a fungal looking flower in the other, or a fungus tower.
And if were going to go as far as custom factions, Vazheli could be waving a Crimson flag around, Sepsu using a whip. ;lol
-
Mostly a note to self: Geo has asked elsewhere for a lip-licking relish smilie, and an Eeek.
-
Does it have to be a big "eek"?
-
Wel, it'd be nice to have the basic smilies on the same scale. :-\
On the Smac(x) smilies, how about Morgan as a sort of :profit: smilie, but instead of dollar signs the energy symbols of Smacx appearing and disappearing around him?
-
I think I'll try to knock out the lip-licking next. Will ;relish do for a code?
I'll use what Valka posted as basis for the ;eek after that.
-
Sure. Thank you for taking the reques. :)
-
Done. ;relish
Not a very tough basic thing to animate, but over an hour went into it with the tweaking.
-
;eek
That was fairly easy.
...
It's a good idea to suggest code and hovertext when you make a request - you never know WHAT I'll come up with. >:)
-
Done. ;relish
Not a very tough basic thing to animate, but over an hour went into it with the tweaking.
Shouldn't the tongue be bigger? It comes almost over like a reptile tongue...
-
No refunds.
I'll see what I can do.
-
The eye expansion is a nice touch though. ;b;
-
Yesterday's and today's versions for comparison. The membership's call.
(http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7298.0;attach=9277;image) (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7298.0;attach=9278;image)
-
Somewhere in between those - in the new version it almost looks like the smiley is licking its eyes, which is disgusting.
-
That's what I was afraid of when I didn't make the tongue bigger yesterday.
I'll do an iteration that keeps the width but not the length, then.
-
That didn't take long - and I always try to minimize file size, so there's that.
(http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7298.0;attach=9277) (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7298.0;attach=9278) (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7298.0;attach=9279)
I could also try a version where the tongue extends down a pixel over the lip line if anyone really wants; the size of the second version tongue with less nose-licking action...
-
Number 3 in that last one is a winner IMO.
-
Anyone else?
-
The last one is good.
-
Hey Geo - you were around 'poly forever, so maybe you'll enjoy this. Aeson has taken over ownership, y'know, and Ming's back in charge of the staff now. Today, I had an inspiration, and offered Aeson the attached, with the suggestion of "Who's the B*stard NOW?" for hovertext. [snickers]
-
Valka, I noticed several smilies in the pop-up form that needed more work. See if the two attached don't look better in a dark theme. More to come.
-
Another try with that dang bike...
Ah. Much better.
-
And these:
-
"Wave," "chess," "clap," and "dunno" work fine. The bike still needs work, though.
I'm curious as to what you think of the spud on a scooter I've got in my sig. That was created on smileygenerator.us several years ago. That site has many thousands of various smileys, and I know of another that has similar ones, but in a different style. That site's mostly in Russian, but the smileys are quite good.
-
I dunno. The bike is sisko's. Yours is okay, but not close at all to the house style.
Maybe after I've worked through all the faint halo, I'll take another run at the bike.

Never had Ming's wrath descend on me, so I don't 'officially' know what you're talking about. ;cute

48 frame smiles are a pain.
-
All much improved, I think. Now to take another run at that messy bike...
-
Here. That thing was profoundly messed up - looks like a bad optimization. This oughta work.
I do not understand why people make such sloppy smilies.
-
-Also, for your amusement, a Mormon smilie I made long ago, based on same, I think.
-
I dunno. The bike is sisko's. Yours is okay, but not close at all to the house style.

I was just curious as to whether you like it as itself. It started out as a basic potato-shaped smiley, and over time some of us on that forum started anthropomorphizing it. Waaay back, Spud on a scooter was my avatar at CivFanatics.
-
It's nicely rendered. It might work better if the scooter was brighter color, to set off the spud in its dull 'tateriness.
-
Spud may have a dull color, but he's not a dull-minded character. Sure, he enjoys being a couch potato at times, but he's got his adventurous side. :D
-
The original party root?
-
Actually, I was thinking of the time he crashed the Dragonloft forum's Christmas party a few years ago. I'd thought of adding Spud to the list of characters I write in this co-operative forum RPG, but he didn't mesh in very well with the other webcomic characters.
-

What were the other webcomic characters?
-
The Fuzzy Knights - Mossfoot, Violet, Ben, and Target.
It's a webcomic done by a friend of mine, Noah Chinn, who currently lives in British Columbia in Canada. He based it on the Knights of the Dinner Table comic book/game magazine, about a group of people who sit around a dinner table and play Dungeons & Dragons-type games.
Fuzzy Knights started out in a similar way, except the characters are stuffed animals who sit on a dinner table and play D&D-type games (as well as get into other adventures with other stuffed animals). Mossfoot is a green teddy bear, Violet is a purple teddy bear, Ben is a Beatrix Potter-type bunny rabbit, and Target is a black & white tuxedo cat.
As you can see from the attached picture, Mossfoot is the Dungeon Master, and Target, Violet, and Ben are the players. The props are scaled down to fit with these stuffed toys, which are approximately 6-8" tall, depending if they're sitting or standing.
-
To explain about Dragonloft... that's a forum that split off from the official Knights of the Dinner Table forum (some nasty forum politics happened there some years ago - long story). I have permission from Noah Chinn to use the Fuzzy Knights characters in my own stories - basically written fanfiction or webcomic-type stuff, as long as I don't claim Fuzzy Knights as my own or try to profit in any way.
So I've got a couple of fanfic stories in progress, and have been collecting stuffed toys to be the characters in what we call "home brew" Fuzzy Knights.
And to keep this vaguely on-topic, I do have some Fuzzy Knights smileys that were made many years ago (there are others, but not on my computer at the moment):
-
Huh. Well, I never even heard of either of these until now- but then again im ancient and don't really venture on the internet too much.
Is style of comics somewhat cartoonish? Tongue in cheek humour and such; maybe link to one of these comics is possible?
-
Okay, I've installed all the latest versions - the writer smilie needs a little fixing to the animation, and the link and click me smilies need a little adjustment for dark backgrounds, and then I'll be down to Geo's idea about faction leader animations until someone suggests something I'd rather do.
-I also notice that the Awards icon in the postbit and the Report button could use cleaning, but my access to the server is broken again, and I've no other way to replace those.
-

It's a webcomic that's done with photography. Those are real stuffed animals, and obviously the speech balloons are added later. http://www.kenzerco.com/images/periodicals/LARP/phpslideshow.php?directory=.¤tPic=11 (http://www.kenzerco.com/images/periodicals/LARP/phpslideshow.php?directory=.¤tPic=11)
Some parts of this webcomic were made in Japan, some in London, and some in Canada (wherever the creator happened to be living at the time). For some years the comics were published in Knights of the Dinner Table, a comic/RPG by Kenzer & Company (those people are absolutely disgusting pigs in some ways, which is why I'm reluctant to send anyone to their website to talk about FK... but since that's the only place I know where most of the strips are - besides my Photobucket account - so be it.).
If anyone's wondering, L.A.R.P. stands for "Live Action Role Playing" - a way developed for people to act out Dungeons & Dragons-type adventures live, but safely.
-
Okay, :link: and :clickme: were not a big deal. :writer:, however, is fifty. nine. freekin'. frames., and I had to go through every. single. one. multiple. times. for over. three. hours. I learned a great deal about how the replace function works in the process, but SHEESH! That one was murder.

Luckily for you, there's a certain attorney in Pennsylvania willing to take your homicide case. ;cute

YESS!

What would a 'posting from my phone' smilie look like?
A tying on its phone smilie with the letters from the word "Tapatalk" appearing one at the time around it?
-
A tying on its phone
What?
-
He does look crisper with the contrast, doesn't he?
He certainly does. :D
-
For old time's sake...
-
Hey; I wonder if I know anyone who would like one of those altered into a kitteh?

typing.
Hope I didn't give rope fantasies. ;cute

A smilie starts with an idea. I thought of something that would make a good example, and in GIMP, File>New>45x45>ok. -That gave me, you guessed it, a 45x45 pixel block to work with - that's not a lot of pixels to work with to draw something that looks like something, but about as tall as you want to ever go, and only then for the occasional animation.
Then Layer>Transparency>Add Alpha Channel. Then [Ctrl]a>Delete. -Which yields a transparent background to draw on, something you always want for any smilie that isn't still and square. Then I fiddled around until I'd drawn the following innocent example:
-Teddy bears are easy to draw.
Then I realized it needed to show up against white backgrounds so I outlined the white with gray - then fiddled around with how dark
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175197&d=1394687683&thumb=1)
And after a certain amount of tweaking, Image>Mode>Indexed (to only 3 colors -which will help keep the file size small, something to always strive for) and saved the result as a .gif:
Coming Soon: a simple animation of the black and white teddy bear...
-
To demonstrate the simplest of two-frame .gif animations, I took the still black-and-white teddy bear, an absolutely innocent example that I posted before, and commenced to make a second layer.
That's a simple right-click on the thumbnail in the Layers box>Duplicate Layer, resulting in
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175218&d=1394741061&thumb=2)
The idea was to make Teddy wave, so I redrew the arm a little:
and also made the changes you can see in the Layers text to the right od the frame icon. 300ms is slightly under a third of a second, and (replace) does the obvious. (If Teddy was still, but blinking, I'd use combine, and erase most of the redundant pixels for the frame. I'll be back shortly with a demonstration.)
-
To make Teddy blink, I reloaded the basic model, duplicated the layer, selected the dupe and blacked out the eyes.
Then I made the base layer visible so I could see where the eyes had been, but left the dupe layer selected, while I used the select tool to make the smallest box that included them
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175222&d=1394745556)
and cropped the layer down to just that
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175223&d=1394745656)
I decided a double blink would look better, so I duped the cropped layer twice
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175224&d=1394745798)
and put the eyes back in the middle copy
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175225&d=1394745839&thumb=1)
Here's what it looked like without the background, comprising most of the black-and-white teddy bear, showing
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175226&d=1394745959)
and with
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175227&d=1394745978)
-Note the timing for each layer, and the use of (combine). This makes for a small file, as 43x45 animated .gifs go.
And here's blinking Teddy. (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175245&d=1394809488)

Hey; I wonder if I know anyone who would like one of those altered into a kitteh?
I might be able to hazard a guess... :D
Could you guess what the kitteh looked like?
This means to describe the color and markings of preferred kitteh. Keep in mind that I can't do anything very subtle with so few pixels, and the forepaws ought to really be a different color than the hips, if I'm to do the dancing one.
-Even better: I'd love to talk you through how to do it yourself...
-
One of my cats is basic black, with gold eyes. She wears a pink collar. She does have a few white hairs, but not enough that would show up for a project like this.
My other cat is tortoiseshell, which means she's every color a cat can be, and one color shades very subtly into another while still making the distinctive tortoiseshell pattern.
I did have some tuxedo cats a long time ago - two who were black and white, and one who was medium grey and white (he had the classic white paws, chest, and chin, while the rest of him was a beautifully soft medium grey color.
My first cat was Siamese, with the classic markings (rounder face because she had not-Siamese in her genetic background, plus she was female).
I've heard of GIMP, but every time I tried to figure it out, it went right over my head. :(
-
If you'd like to try, I'm an accomplished teacher of this kind of thing. I know GIMP is an aircraft control panel, but I was able to teach myself and I've definitely taught others... When my mom has computer problems, and this goes all the way back to her first VCR, she'd really rather I just took care of it, but I've always done her the (much more time-consuming in the short run) favor of empowering her to fix for herself.
A smilie aficionado like you would love being able to create/alter/fix in GIMP...
Otherwise, I guess you should show me a picture of the kitteh of your choice.
-
If a black silhouette will do, here.
-
It's cute, but the paws on the hips are a little creepy (they make the cat suddenly look half as big in that area.
-
If you're willing to put up with what will undoubtedly be really novice questions, I'll give it a try.
These are my cats, Chloe and Maddy.
-
If a black silhouette will do, here.
Even if a little creepy: ;lol ;b;
How difficult would it be to let the ears wiggle as well?
-
If you're willing to put up with what will undoubtedly be really novice questions, I'll give it a try.
Valka, I live for answering novice questions. ;b;How difficult would it be to let the ears wiggle as well?
Not very.

Obiwan Kenobi as a hot leather nun. ;rotflmao

Not even the oldlings were spared. ;lol

Not even the frogs were spared.

You may regret saying that. There are some things about computers that are probably as basic as breathing to you, but I just don't understand them.
Anyway, what is the first step - downloading GIMP?
-
Yes'm. Google GIMP. It's free.
-
Okay, I decided that for my next, whatchacallit, tootoreal, I'd make Teddy dance for your amusement.
First, I opened the waving version from the last lesson. I thought I'd begin by having him wave both arms, so first I selected the straight arm with the Fuzzy Select/magic wand tool. The subtext of this here intructional thingy is unintentional, BTW, and you have a dirty mind for noticing.
[Delete]>selected other arm>[Ctrl]c to copy. (You don't have to draw the whole figure when it's symmetrical - an entire half you can copy/flip will do, as I did in drawing Teddy in the first place.)
[Ctrl]v to paste
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175296&d=1394947511)
Layers>Transform>Flip horizontally
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175297&d=1394947530) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175298&d=1394947550)
Drag it over into position
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175299&d=1394947571)
deselect
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175300&d=1394947587)
Now, two frames is enough for a basic animation, as before, but I want Teddy to wave his arms twice before he goes on to his next -totally innocent- moves.
So I right-click on the Background Layer thumbnail in the menu>Duplicate Layer
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175301&d=1394947612) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175302&d=1394947631)
drag it past the second layer to the third layer position/top
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175303&d=1394947660) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175304&d=1394947675)
and do the same with the second layer.
Now it's just a matter of renaming and putting the right commands in the text next to each thumbnail.
.gifs aren't picky about what you name each layer, as long as it includes a number higher than the layer before. The easiest thing to do is copy/paste the text from Frame 2 (300ms) (replace), correcting the number as you go -
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175307&d=1394947723)
There's more to the dance teddy's gonna do, but that needs to wait, because bedtime. Here's what we've got so far:
-And next time, Teddy's gonna bust some mad moves, yo.
-
It needn't be dancing smilies! For instance, Miri could be incorporated as a ;worship smilie!
Okay. Keep the ideas coming.

;yang; with a glowing saint's ring behind/above his head? Deirdre with this "LALALAA" smilie text and a little mouth movement with it? Santiago has a shotgun appearing in a hand next to her, and fires it?
-
That's it, unless I'm forgetting something, or get inspired. You said to do something with all the leaders, or at least the original seven. I'm open to suggestions.
-Ah. Ninja edit'd. Let me percolate those in the back of my head.
-
Just added my previous post with suggestions.
But if for some reason a request isn't valid, you better say so.
-
I wasn't satisfied, so here's a much improved Kermit.
-
Teddy's next move is to put his paws on his hips. The last frame of what I posted last night had his arms up, so I added a 5th frame, a copy of the first, and a sixth with his arms redrawn even lower
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175333&d=1395034203)
and then, elbows bent
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175334&d=1395034224).
Now the next part is tricky. I want Innocent Teddy to sway his hips. First, I copy the last layer and select everything from the bottom up to the middle of his paws
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175335&d=1395034243)
And use the Sheer Tool to skew the figure as below:
Leaving us this:
I make the level below visible and move the skewed selection over to match the position of the feet before I deselect
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175338&d=1395034300)
I select the rest of the torso, up to the top of the shoulder and leaving the neck-head out
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175339&d=1395034319)
And do all the same things again, yielding
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175340&d=1395034367)
And some cursory clean-up gives me
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175341&d=1395034389)
-Now, this is only eight frames of 16, so boring tl;dr how-to to go, right? Well actually, we're sittin' in bamboo, 'cause that's all the figures drawn; the rest is just copy/paste stuff.
The next frame is a copy of the last, standing straight. For the one after, that
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175342&d=1395034422)
-The left-skew copied and flipped.
To get two shakes of the hips, then straight, left, straight, right, straight, and finish with a copy the paws out-down
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175343&d=1395034470)
For a final step I haven't mentioned before
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175344&d=1395034493)
(This auto-crops the individual layers and optimizes the smallest possible filesize. That matters.)
And then, to check your work (use the optimize function, but don't trust it not to mess your animation up), in the new window/copy that results
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175345&d=1395034578)
If satisfactory, set the Mode to Indexed (it's a .gif thing - and animations need to be in .gif format)
Teddy's only three colors, so
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175348&d=1395034654)
-Which is important to keep the server load minimized. Never go for the 255 default unless you have to - for instance, when using a full-color photo.
Now. save as a .gif - click Save as Animation in the Export File pop-up>Export.
And now, give it y'all, while the Latest, the Greatest, the Move-bustin'-est cuddly toy in InnerWebtown, INNOCENT TEDDY TEARS UP TH' DANCE FLO', F****ING S*** UP, OLD-SCHOOL!
Next: Dirty Dancing. -You trust me by now, don't you? ;lol
-
Erm... ;hide
Hey, perhaps Roze as a running away smilie, and ;zak; as an idea smilie.

There are some things about computers that are probably as basic as breathing to you, but I just don't understand them.
You can't possibly be as bad as my 73 year-old mom, and the other grannies think she's teh haxxor now. Check here (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=2259.msg9082#msg9082) on for more on that. I posted some photo manipulation she did in GIMP on the next page.
-
I added the soldier and animated the leap and fall.
-
The smilies on forums like 'poly and CFC, established around 1999, kinda suck. They reflect the ninties tech those places started with, being mostly tiny and unshaded. But on that theme, here: I'll create the primal emoticon from scratch as a demonstration of the absolute basics.
In fact, I'll time myself, because it's that easy.
First,
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175422&d=1395290843)
15x15 is the default size there, so
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175423&d=1395291026)
Which gave me a little 225 pixel square the background color in my toolbox. So-
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175424&d=1395291052)
[Ctrl]a (select all)>Delete.
Then, because GIMP has no stinking draw circle function, I used the Ellipse Select Tool to fill the box with a circle -WITH Antialiasing UNclicked (otherwise it will fuzz outside the circle a little and require cleanup)-
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175425&d=1395291152)
And used the Bucket Fill Tool to make a yellow disk
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175426&d=1395291191)
Then I switched to black and drew in the edges
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175427&d=1395291219)
And drew in a basic smiley face
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175428&d=1395291242)
Then Image>Mode>Indexed>set the colors to 2>Export>File>Save As...>entered "Smilie.gif" (it's easier to just type in the extension)>Save
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175429&d=1395291287)
(It pops up with "Created with GIMP". I say to have pride in your work and never skip an opportunity to sign it.)>Save.
Which gives us this
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175430&d=1395291622) (Compare to the one at 'poly (http://apolyton.net/images/smilies/smile.gif))
-Two minutes, twelve seconds from File>New to Save, and I made a three word answer to a Skype during. Going back to make the screenies and writing it, on the other hand, up has taken an hour.
Next: I think I'll cover some more basic, but more complex, stuff before I get back to Advanced Teddy...
-
...and I made a three word answer to a Skype during.
"Get lost, amigo"? ;cute

How came that about? Heard anything from a certain ozzielander lately or what?
But on that mindset, how about a "Taco's" kinda smilie imposed on the Texas state silhouette?
-
No, apropos of nothing, but now I have it ready the next time I want to cheese him off. -Which will follow quickly on the next time he comes around, no doubt.
But on that mindset, how about a "Taco's" kinda smilie imposed on the Texas state silhouette?
Doable if I knew what you were talking about. Think you'll be talking to Sloww anytime soon?

Here's one I already made for Sloww...

No, apropos of nothing, but now I have it ready the next time I want to cheese him off. -Which will follow quickly on the next time he comes around, no doubt.

Sloww? AFAIK, I don't know the fellow. :-\
As on visualizing Taco Texas. Of course the outline of Texas, and a steaming (smoke lined) taco appearing in the center of it?
Are there any plans to put the finished animated SMAC-leader smilies on the smilie page? Unworthy Miri is really a masterpiece...
-
Slowwhand. Was a regular in the Traitorland OT for a couple years. Still active at 'poly. One of the few innerwebs people I've met in meatspace.
Find me a taco picture and I'll see what I can do.
I may install praying Miriam - with one of them flipped, she'd compliment :unworthy: beautifully. I'm not hostile to similar for the other leaders, given amusing enough smilies. I worry about having so many you can't find what you want in the zoo, but this is a SMAC forum, after all.
I just had inspiration for Deirdre while typing this, BTW. Stay tuned.
-
Find me a taco picture and I'll see what I can do.
Its not a smilie I need for some reason. Just an idea that popped up in relation to "Ausfailia". And since you mentioned you liked quickly done artistic stuf...

How about animated fumes? ;)
And instead of "seemskindaracist", call it Taco Tornado!

I'm working on something. After that.

This is what I was working on. I believe forums with more Star Trek than Star Wars smilies are rare. I'm proud of that.

No love for the Enterprise is pretty demotivating. You wouldn't believe how much trouble it took to get the starfield right.

Jeeze, can't you read? It's right there on the pylon. (You coulda just entered the smilie code in your sig.)
I'm working on a Dierdre thing today...

But now I have it available for other forums too. ;cute
Pylon? The pipes connecting the warp nacelles with the the bottom hull?

I see. Clicking the picture opens up a link so to speak.

Speaking of which, do you mean to have your photobucket hyperlinked?

Its linked to the public section, so I'm not in a hurry to adjust it.

I got some more suggestions for the other leaders:
Zakharov popping out of a test tube- or bunsen burner.
Morgan's head on a bank note or rolling around on a coin on edge.
Yang's head going in and out of a rabbit hole (w/rabbit ears).
Santiago as a rocket- somewhat like Grant Morrison's 'Bulleteer'

Mo' from Molly:
Domai as one end of a barbell (his profile has the photo of the weight lifting/bodybuilders competition) or a spanner.
Aki as a computer screen or image in one, or embedded in circuits...
Svengaard with eye patch, or possibly replacing the skull in a skull and crossbones flag.
Cha Dawn as the Caterpillar from 'Alice's Adventures In Wonderland'

Hmmm. I saw a few days ago that the animation of the popcorn smilie was defective - I don't know why I never noticed before.
It was a problem I've encountered before; the (replace) and (combine) functions don't play well together when (replace) follows (combine) and something has to move against the transparent background. Took a very long time to track down all the details, but I finally got it, and added some shading/depth to customize in the AC2 style while I was in there. Alas, the file size increased substantially between more colors and all the frames I had to convert back to (replace). But working animation definitely beats broken. ;nod
Side by side for comparison:

-
I just decided to make a ;no smilie. I've loaded up the ;nod smilie to work from, so let's time how long it takes...
-
Ten minutes.
-
(http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7298.0;attach=9369) ;popcorn
The right one looks complete, the left one has a double popcorn bag at a certain point in the animation. I take it the right one is the most recent one?
-
Yessir. It doesn't hurt that in addition to having the animation fixed, it looks more advanced than the CFC model...
I'm favorably inclined to installing ;no. Whaddyathink?
-
I suggest making movement of smily's head from side to side faster. Looks kind of jarring and unnaturally slow.
-
That would look like this:
-
Looks better.

I am stubbornly persistent, and that turns out to be rewarding in the long run. I know that someday someone will actually read these tutorials and benefit. Having them post to let me know would be nice, too - and ask questions and show me their work, definitely.
So, having decided to knock out a shakes-head/no smilie, I loaded up the nod smilie I made almost a month ago ;nod, because the facial expression and animation needs are very similar, and the two will serve as compliments to one another.
(Protip: I learned almost everything I know about this stuff modifying the work of others. Right-click>Save picture as..., {or whatever the equivalent in your browser,} and open some emoticons in GIMP to see how this one or that one works - and try some modifications. You'll learn a great deal in a hurry if you, for instance, save where I've posted before and after files and try to duplicate my work.)
As you can tell looking at the thumbnails in the Layers box, Nod has been optimized, leaving three (combine) frames that would be a pain in the butt to mod. GIMP has a function for just such an occasion:
You often need Unoptimize for fixing broken/crap animations, too. I used it fixing Popcorn earlier today.
A new GIMP window pops up.
That's what we'll be working in.
The first and third frames, with features-centered, will be fine for our needs once the corners are taken off the mouth, (otherwise, it might look smug - going for neutral is better unless you have multiple No versions, like 'poly has), but the other two need to be blanked out. It's not a HUGE pain to restore the background on these pseudo-3D shaded smilies, but there's a quicker shortcut
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175479&d=1395529085)
This is my stock template, SmilieBlank.gif. When I was developing the Alpha Centari 2 smilie house style a couple years ago, I eventually figured out that a background template could A.) save me a LOT of tedious work shading, and B.) give the various smiley face-type emoticons visual consistency.
So I copied the template, switched back to the unoptimized copy of Nod, and pasted it into frames 2 and 4
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175485&d=1395530561)
Then got rid of the turned up corners of the mouth in frames 1 and 3 (sampled the color above them and penciled out those two black pixels), and used the Select by Color Tool to select the facial features
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175480&d=1395529278)
[Ctrl]c to copy>
Clicked on Frame 2 in the Layers menu to select it>paste
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175481&d=1395529300)
Drag it over one pixel's worth to the side
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175482&d=1395529323)
And click outside the box to deselect. Then repeat on Frame 4 in the opposite direction, take the corners off the mouth in frame 3, and it should be done. Filters>Animation>Playback to check -
>Change the timing on frames 3 &4, rename all of them to #s w/o spacing to reduce filesize, Filters>Recently Used>Playback to check again - looks, great. So, Filters>Animation>Optimize (for Gif) gives you this
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175483&d=1395529375)
The nod smilie had already been saved Indexed for minimum colors, so I Saved As... (always for a new file, and besides, the plain Save function overwrites tweaks w/o the credit) and voila'!

Unconnected to anything, I've decided to create a ; hypocrisy smilie...
-
I have no mouth, but I must scream:
-
Comment, d**m you! The dog just died, and I could use distraction.
-
...
-
I like the faster movement better, and the larger of the three nutz heads.
-
Thanks. I try to conceal my impatience, but this is suddenly a horrible day.
-
I have no mouth, but I must scream:
I have to admit, that story was frightening.
Also, I hope your dog went peacefully. It is never easy to lose a friend like that...
-
;realdog He'd been going downhill for a long time. I guess he's at peace now.
-
My condolences, BU.
-
Thanks.
-
Any reason not to turn this guy :hunter: into Santi? Or was that the idea of the shotgun suggestion?
...
And BTW - ;no
-
?
Geo, I wonder if you can guess who in particular (besides practically all Republicans when they accuse Bakrama of doing things that actually the Bush occupation did) I was thinking of when I made this?
-
Nope, no idea. Not when about all Reps are excluded.
Besides, since last evening people here should be wary of what they post. A certain president wanders around today in the immediate area, and criticism may come under closer scrutiny then normally would...
-
Oh. You're talking about Bakrama visiting waffleland in RL. Had me going for a minute.
(It's not Dale.)
-
Dale monitoring WPC? ;lol
He'd never find the time. :P
-
Member Mr. President (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=profile;u=11306) was browsing the fiction forum last night - that's what threw me. ;lol Helluva coincidence.
Dale's not a hypocrite.
-
So what else do I need to cover in the tutorials? I've covered everything I can think of, aside from trying to teach how to draw - which is something a lot more complex and un-web-friendly than showing which buttons to push, and which I don't intend to tackle.
Thoughts?
...
Valka, I could use some beginner questions for inspiration...
-
A pothead asked me for a pothead nod, so-
-
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175583&d=1396062352)
Just thought I'd get that out of the way up front...
I've really covered all the how I can think of w/o going into how to draw, but perhaps it will be instructive to show the individual frames that went into the above w/ commentary. If you're following along seriously at home, save the .gif and open it in GIMP, so you can switch between this and having a closer look for yourself.
Stage one, the opening hip-wiggle, is these three over and over for 13 frames:
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175584&d=1396062384) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175585&d=1396062415) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175586&d=1396062760)
That's (A B A C A B A C A B A C) for three shakes. The neutral A is somewhat superfluous between the opposing B and C, but is left in this overlong [42 frames is pretty excessive] animation 1.) for instructional purposes, and 2.) because quick intermediate frames do make for a smoother animation.
To begin the transition to the next part of the dance, Teddy extends his paws and scrunches down two pixels (to emphasize difference in height to make the leap more visible w/o making the frame borders any taller than absolutely needed - tall smilies break up line spacing, so shorter is better) in preparation to leap.
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175587&d=1396062797) Now in the air and turning (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175588&d=1396062835)
Frames that are going to be up for a tenth-second (100ms) or less don’t need to look as good.
Sticks the landing
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175589&d=1396062861)
Now in full profile, still contracted.
Full height, drawn back for pelvic thrust
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175590&d=1396062922)
And it’s the pelvic thrust that drives Asher insa-yay-yay-yayane
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175591&d=1396063037)
And frames (G H) to do it again, then back to (F E) to turn to other way then use the same frames, flipped, to do it twice more in the other direction.
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175592&d=1396063118) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175593&d=1396063158) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175594&d=1396063185) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175595&d=1396063394)
(I J K L K L)
-Ending in a full-height profile to transition to the concluding spin
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175596&d=1396063411)
(J I N)
N being D moved up two pixels in the frame - always emphasizing the height difference in jumps, the alternative being taking up a lot more space for the hops to be visible.
(D)
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175598&d=1396063472) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175599&d=1396063509) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175600&d=1396063540) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175601&d=1396063576) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175602&d=1396063607)
-These are all alterations of frames already shown, different in placement, height and foot-positioning for realism, and the differences in the feet of the reflections of R Q P and O that bring us back around are too trivial to be worth making the screenies.
S, like O, is just an alteration of D. The 19 different figures I’ve portrayed are close to being the same six repeated endlessly - far more work went into figuring out how to animate the next move and tweaking the timing through trial and error than drawing the variations.
Here’s the entire arrangement of frames and timing from the Layers Menu
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175603&d=1396063659) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175604&d=1396063694) (http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175605&d=1396063710)
…
I had no idea that I had much artistic talent when I began modding SMACX faction art -which is how I got started with this, forums and everything- I did alterations of other peoples’ work, and kept at it and learned new things until it turned out that I was good at a lot of stuff.
The first step is to take on modest projects - shamelessly modifying pre-existing works a little until you gain mastery and move up in originality, according to your developing talent. I’ve been doing this for years to get this good, so don’t let that intimidate you from trying as a beginner. I didn’t have any tutorials to smooth out the bumps.
Here’s an alteration I made Valka of an earlier Teddy dance into a black kitteh
(http://apolyton.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=175606&d=1395071782)
(I then posted it at 'poly for Slowwhand; he's a crazy cat lady)
My challenge/homework assignment to you is take the same animation and turn it into a different animal. Then post, that I may praise your industry.
Questions and such are welcome. I will be delighted to be of whatever help I can be.
Good hunting.

Seeing your dog caught me by complete surprise!
Speaking of surprises, is the Enterprise going to do anything else like cloak or de-cloak, fire phasers or photon torpedoes?
-
It could... Which Enterprise?
-
I was talking about the one in your sig line.
But if this is some kind of test about my Star Trek geek credentials, they don't go very far.
Here goes- your sig line is the original Enterprise from the original TV series. In the series, only the Klingons could cloak. The Enterprise had shields only. The Romulans used some sort of plasma cloud weapon that drifted over to the Enterprise and knocked everybody off of their feet. In the original series phasers are a ray weapon, and photon torpedoes are a more like missiles. In the pilot it was different. I think they used the term phaser for what we know think of as a photon torpedo.
Later, in the movies or the Next Generation tv series, they had captured the cloaking ability by defeating the Klingons in a war, I guess.
Well, Next Generation had a Klingon crewman, so the Klingon Empire had to be part of the Federation by then.
So, if I got that right, your Enterprise is limited to phasers and photon torpedoes. But it has nothing to shoot at. At the least it would need a Klingon ship to chase.
Sounds like a lot of work to me. Time that could be spent writing a parody science news article. ;)
-
If you've been paying attention to what I post about Star Trek and think about it, it doesn't compute that I'd be trying to find out if someone knew their fake Star Track. There is only one Enterprise for me in that context.
Yeah, I was asking if you meant the one in Geo's sig or mine. I could add in a phaser animation - the tracking across the screen is a forum function, so moving tricks aren't compatible, but I could add phasers...
-
Yeah, I knew you were a purist.
Did I get it right?
-
It was the Romulans w/cloaks - all disappearing Klingon action was movies and later.
I am a bad innerwebs nerd for only correcting that when asked...
-
Okay, I've been trying to get to this one since Sunday, but stuff more urgent &/or appealing kept popping up. The :hunter: smilie was 49 frames long - that's a lot of times to paste Santi's head, and this called for angles and changing facial expressions. ;worship was two frames, for comparison, and :danc:, eight.
I spent hours on shooting Santiago yesterday, and went to bed not finished, which is not something I'm used to at all.
But here: I say I outright replace :hunter: w/ Ms. Goldenheart. What say y'all?
-
What about making a smilie for native life? It could be a simple mindworm boil? Does the concept of a simple native life drawing even exist?
-
Sure. Units.pcx. Tell me more. Does it do anything? What would the smilie stand for? Funny jokes are acceptable, so think of smilie code and hovertext...
No opinion about shootin' Santi - or other possible SMAC leader smilies? Yang, Zak and Morgan need ideas...
-
No opinion about shootin' Santi - or other possible SMAC leader smilies? Yang, Zak and Morgan need ideas...
Next to the shooting sequence, I like the glint in her eye somewhere around the gun loading sequence and the way she looks up. ;b;
Zak --> ;idea (the idea bulb popping up), or ;woohooscience (Zak in the place of that running to-and-fro smilie with the woohoo text hovering above it, but let an atomic particle diagram follow him as well).
The latter could be used to spice up the appropriate science articles that keep cropping up on the forum. ;cute
-
Hmmm. That's a tough one - Woohoo isn't that many frames, but Zak would have to be tiny -probably too small to look like Zak- or we'd have a really big smilie.
If nobody has and opinion about replacing :hunter:, you know I'll eventually just indulge myself.
-
(http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7298.0;attach=9434)!
-
without a doubt!
-
Somebody asked me for a hippy Jesus, so here's some comedy blasphemy. Sorry, gwill.
-
Here you go, Rusty.
See, what's been in my sig wasn't animated - it was a still pic using the forum's
Marquee button...
-
Hmm. let's try fiddling with the timing...
-
I got two idea's, have ;domai; with a hammer for a WIP emote, and maybe as a personal request, have Vazheli waving a red flag/crimson banner as another form of salute or wave hat equivalent- wave flag.
-
:danc: :D :D
How does your sister like this?
That made me laugh when I saw it on my phone. My wife asked, I explained, and she smiled and said- "you're all just big kids at heart."
Thanks! This makes me joyful.
Here's a Geek question... Did Kirk ever destroy a Romulan vessel with phasers?
This really is entertaining ;woohoo ;woohoo :adore:
When you're done making smilies would you like me to alphabetize them?
-
She hasn't seen it yet - her life is in chaos, with retirement and moving back to America. Hopefully soon - but the violent adventure part is not the part of Trek that appeals to girls, so she'll only like it so much.
Kirk did not. He only faced a Romulan Bird of prey once, and it self-destructed when he beat it. Balance of Terror is blatantly ripped off from based on a couple of WWII destroyer-chases-sub movies - you'd love it.
Dunno what good alphabetizing smilies would do - ours don't display showing the code under...
-
I am thinking about your requests, Jarl. Sometimes I need to let things percolate in the back of my head until a good idea for how to portray them pops out.
-
Thanks. Just thought I'd offer. This is really fun to watch!
-
Actually, I could try making one myself... it is just matter of producing the frames...
Whats the size specifications for this?
-
There isn't one. However, if you can keep it down to 20 pixels tall so as not to mess up line spacing in posts much, and the motion to the sides, wide isn't a problem; that would be ideal.
-
...So 20x20 is the base value to shoot for, but again, more width than that is far less of a problem. 45 pixels tall is roughly the upper limit. Files should try to be as small as feasible both in physical size and bytes. You've got the tutorials I've posted in this thread to educate you on the process, which is far, far more help than I ever had.
...
Mylochka has observed a need for the existence of a 'herding cats' smilie. I have little idea how to draw such a thing as yet.
-
I wasn't really satisfied with the Rom peal-off, so let's try this:
-
For the herding cats one, maybe draw a person with a shepherd's crook trying to goad a cat to follow him, and it just sitting there, the person with a frustrated facial expression.
-
I was vaguely thinking of a cluster of tiny cat faces, a little like ;lynchmob, but smaller, and a broom...
-
Someone should do a miniature morgan smilie doing jumping jacks with red and white long sleeve gym clothes on ::). Think the longevity vaccine secret project video except that Morgan's business suit is replaced with gym clothes.
-
Or at least doing a flip? I like. I like a LOT. Better than a head counting money. This may actually happen.

That sounds correct. It could represent :Morgan Joke:. I know of several examples from different users.
-
All the leader smilies are jokes. How about ;moroblics and "Profit from fitness" as hovertext?
Now - any more feedback about the NL smilie?
-
I do not have anything for the native life smilie. However, I am thinking about smilies for Yang and Zakharov. My thoughts for Yang have included him doing meditation, him doing the whip smilie, or perhaps the face of Yang replacing the red face in the "worship the king" smilie. You could the replace the nutz smilie or add to it by having Zakharov holding a beaker while having that crazy look on his face.
-
Time to google for a jumping jacks smilie to alter...
-
If I don't get to the Morgan one soon, somebody remind me in a day or two - for almost two weeks, it's felt like a treadmill, with me never catching up on everything that ought to be done for very long. and I'm way behind today.
-
Let me remind you of ;zak; then. Combine him with this one: :dunno:
-
After reading the article "What Does Today Owe Tomorrow?" and seeing the photo of smoggy Beijing, I wondered if we could have a sneezing smily? Mouth open with "-ah" and lips pursed (like the whistler, but open slightly wider) with "-choo!" Posters could use it to mention they are sick.
-
I can sort of see it in my head. It'll happen.
-

Have we got ourselves a leader smilie?

Yes!!!

It references the hypocrisy that occurs around me everyday in RL.
-
Cool.
I think I'll slap Geo's idea for Zak together next...
-
Easy.
I think that means only Yang to go...
-
Nice, but too easy.
The vanilla dunno smilie moves the features of its head a bit sideways when the arms move. Can't that be done with Zak too?
-
I tried flipping his head first thing, and it looked awful - he's heavily side-lit and the red and green eyes are not interchangeable.
I'll try another draft rotating his head a little along another axis, which is close to the motion the template was going for, anyway...
-
?
Looks like a winner to me.
What's the best idea suggested for Yang? Easy is a plus...
-
I'm replacing the dunno smilie with the Zak version later today if there are no further objections...
-
?
Looks like a winner to me.
;b;
What's the best idea suggested for Yang? Easy is a plus...
:dunno: about best suggestions, but how about a Yang head with arms (and perhaps legs) in a Zen position, and after a few seconds he elevates slowly out of view?
-
?
Looks like a winner to me.
;q;
You're seriously doing that to me with no elaboration? Neither funny nor helpful.

Why don't you let me know what an honest oversight puts on a list? ;cute
-
A smudge mark.
I decided to forgive you for something yesterday; I found out Audrey Hepburn was Belgian by birth. That's strong evidence of something.
-
And what was it that made a mark before yesterday? :whip:
-
Who can remember, from all the stuff you pull? Being a dirty Belgian, in this particular case. ;)
Your latest smudge just reminded me of the origins of the divine Ms. Hepburn.

:dunno: I cannot be absolutely sure it was wise, but the thing is done. :dunno:

/me grins devilishly...

;brain ? ;superiormind ? ;iwintheargument ?

You made the gray matter, that only leaves the dark version? :dunno:

Gray matter = brain
And dark matter = non-observed matter responsible of observed gravity effects in the universe
-
Correction: dark matter = non-existent matter responsible of observed gravity effects in the universe. (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7298.0;attach=9957)

I suddenly had to think of a certain phrase: "remember, I can kill you with my brain". :o

Geo, I have the fuzzy idea you may have mentioned Yang + :whip: before, and I think that's a winner. I'm probably for bed soon, but I'll try to get that tomorrow. I bet it'll be easy, and I'm always for that. ;b;

Geo, Sava says hi.

Geo, Sava says hi.
Where you've seen him?

'poly.

It was actually on the sidewalk outside the gay bathhouse he tells me you used to frequent.

;lol
You and Sava are an item? Who would have thought... :P
-
It's his avatar. His ex-girlfriend had a delightful bottom.
-
For this girls' sake, I hope she still has a 'delightful' bottom. :P
-
Okay - five days to speak up, one vote yes and no votes against whipping Yang, which I happen to be satisfied with. Going to go replace the old whip smilie now.
Forum democracy in action.
-
:whip:
Any new requests? Anything from earlier in the thread I never got to but didn't say no? I live to serve you, my friends. :whip:
...
Geo, what's the deal with you and Sava? And where were you afraid I might know him from, to be relived? Sounds like there's a story. I mentioned that some smilie was your idea, and he sez "GeoModder ;b;"
-
Geo, what's the deal with you and Sava? And where were you afraid I might know him from, to be relived? Sounds like there's a story.
Hmm? No deal, no story AFAIR.
Knew hlm from Eventis if you know that forum.
-
I've heard of that forum, never been there - you know it closed down a few months ago? I do hear there's an English version still up, whatever that means.
-
AFAIR, there's only been an English version ever. And it already went extinct and restarted several times, so nothing new there.
-
Geo, if ;goofy; isn't close enough to what you intend for a ;dizzy smilie, I suppose I could give Cha big swirling spiral eyes, maybe... Whaddayathink?
-
Need to think about it.
Perhaps Aki would be a better choice. There's some room over her head for (a) dizzy spiral(s) line there in addition to the eyes.
This "Herp derp" smilie looks more like someone coming back from a fist fight.
-
A slightly improved version - the face on the quarter-turn de-flattened, and five frames shaved off.

Since you seem so fond of her (;)), something with that Russian Barbie? Her blue(?) eyes blinking? No idea what it should represent though... ;innocent; perhaps?

What's that have to do with Civ:BE?
-
What's that have to do with Civ:BE?
Oh sorry, overlooked that detail.
A brand new one would be the health smilie. If you plan on animating it, the green dot trailed by a line displayed on a medical monitor.
That's what pops up first. The Affinity symbols could be a target too. Again, if you're thinking of animating versions, let them spin. They're pretty much designed to look good in any angle.
-
Nothing that has me racing to boot up GIMP there, but definitely doable.
Be thinking of BE avatar ideas, too. I wanna wait until closer to release, but strikes me as fun projects generating forum goodies for BE-heads...
-
Of course, but one needs to see the AI characters in action before proposing a relatively spot-on animated behaviour of them.
The health one though... If you create a good one first, I bet it would find its way in other forums.
-
I'm not gonna get worked up about being ripped off, but of course I'm more interested in what grows AC2.
Naturally, the best time for this activity to be going is three weeks to a month from now...

Not really serious, but-

I can't find this health icon you mentioned, Geo...

Dunno, man. Dunno...

Purity looks like a very bad game of Asteroids...
-
The affinity icons do rotate rather fast, don't you think?
-
No...
-
Can I make a request for a Flexxing smilie?
-
As in muscle flexing?
Tell me more...
Keeping in mind I'm going to bed any second.

Me too... It's 1:33 AM here.
I was thinking just a normal smily face smilie ( :) ), except with an arm and the arm has a bicep pulsating.
-
I think I did that one years ago. Gimme a bit to root through my smilies...
-
Hmm. Not animated or in the current house style.
Something to do tomorrow...
-
?
-
?
I was hoping the bicep would animate, but I like it.
EDIT: Didn't notice it on the first look.
I like it. I think you should add it to the list of smilies.
-
;hero
-
;hero
Would arching the eyebrow on the biceps side in cue with the biceps flexes be possible?
-
It would be possible - but I didn't think it looked good. Hold on, and I'll post a draft.
---
How about these? That's as slow as I can make them rotate without it looking jerky(er), or having to interpolate twice as many (terrible-looking) frames, doubling the file size...
-
?
-
Pretty good. And getting rid of the black background works too. ;b;
-
?
Looks good. :adore:
-
It's not fair that BUncle gets all the fun.
Here is my attempt at a grossed-out smilie.
The frames build on to eachother for some unknown reason, so I'll include what it came out too and all 3 frames. Doesn't look that good when they stack.

Okay; I aim to please. I'll replace with that.

Okay. An angry face hitting a happy face. Happy face turns into a sad face.
So mean... :(
It actually took longer to find a program to make a GIF then to make the frames.
-
That's better - but you can do better yet in GIMP.
See my tutorial series on smilies - in this thread, and collected in Articles under Internet Art.

You referring to your making of the panda dancing?
Hmm... I kind of did that one based on :doh
Though, unless you made the random brown blocks they are sitting on more detailed, I don't see how you could make it any better without just adding more frames.
-
I'll demonstrate. Be back in a few...
-
Your automatic program does sloppy work. Compare the dimensions of your submission with my revision. Compare the file sizes. Compare how much crisper my smilies you incorporated look after I fixed it.
The program took up a LOT of unnecessary space on the right of the frame where there was white with nothing in it in either frame. Only the rage smilie needed to be elevated. The colors were not indexed. The background was not transparent, to look good against any color webpage.
A program doesn't have the judgment to move the eye on the sad smilie to match the happy better...
Smilies should ALWAYS attempt to be as small as possible, both in dimensions and file size, which is why the older ones on the older websites are two or three colors and 15x15 pixels - it's a minimum burden on the bandwidth and throws off the line spacing the least. Notice how this ;) spaces the line of type a little extra - it's not 1997 tech we have anymore, and I'm an artist, so I indulge myself that much.
Smaller and simpler is better, where feasible. It DID keep the number of frames low, at least.
-
BTW - do keep making stuff. You have talent, and I enjoy teaching, so don't take it too seriously if I come off sounding stern. I'm pleased with you, Blue.
-
...After seeing how it looked on the forum, I put the eye movement back. Funnier that way, I think. Successive drafts is part of the process, often...
-
Geo, I think I found the health thingy you were talking about in a screenshot I saw. I wonder if what I'm visualizing was what you had in mind? Stay tuned...
-
? ;nod ?
-
...Still fiddlin' wit' it...
-

:)
I do agree with the eye movement, as I noticed it the first time 'round, but kept it, it does look funnier.
The :) - :( :whip: smilie was definetly good practice. Although it probably won't go into the form, even after your revision of it. To be perfectly honest with you, I don't do it in GIMP because I couldn't find the button to change frames... Hopefully I'll find that. I've got a few ideas I might try and do if I ever find a use for them. Perhaps the most odd thing to sprout from my mind that we don't have is a small campfire. Maybe with a guy on either side warming his hands.
I'll probably make a smilie punching a wall or something just for good measure in the meantime.
Time to start Final Doom, cya.
-
I'm sure I covered the Layers Menu in the tutorial - that's how you make/change/etc. frames. When you take an interest in something I've written up as a tutorial, you gotta actually READ the darn things.

What are you talking about? I didn't request a new smilie?

I'm just talkin' 'bout Shaft.
You can dig it.

Let's see how this looks on the forum - it's certainly how I feel today.

I'll see what the label says when I make more, later.
-
Perfect!
Maxwell House is all I will buy for home. I like Dunkin' Donuts, but not many others.
Going to the store today; budget will dictate coffee resupply. It's rough.
-
The label only says "100% coffee".
-
Not even the country where the coffee comes from? ???
Such labels would never pass here.
-
Worse - it's instant.
;brainhurts

You call that coffee? :P

I knew you'd think that.
Instant fuels my buncle powers.

Gettin' old? :P

Yes, and feelin' old.
-
Oh.
-
This doesn't happen often, just once in a while: a post has the numeral "8" followed by the closing parenthesis ")" resulting in the sunglasses "cool" smilie "8)" where it might not fit the context and sometimes be inappropriate. It's very insignificant, and most often amusing, but I'm wondering if it can be modified to use just "8 - )" and not convert "8 )"?
-
If it was just up to me, I'd change it - that happens a lot in serious science news stories about the first week of every month. -But sisko HATES it when smile codes are changed and a lot of old post suddenly have garbage in them.
Talk him into it, and we're golden - I don't feel strongly enough about it to override his wishes.

Ehh, I need to work on it. It seemed better at 12 AM.
I still am trying to wrap my head around image sequences in GIMP which is pretty sad, so I used a program. I have the raw files though

That looks like blowing instead of coughing...

That gave me an idea. One moment...

Beta version, BU. Beta version. Beta Smilies are a thing. Kind of.
It's mostly the mouth that bugs me in that one.

Alright, that matters to me because it's the first time I've made a gif solely in GIMP.

:D
Right now my ultimate goal is to animate my avatar to be like pacman.
If I want it to be smooth, I can't imagine how many frames there will be.
-
Incidentally, you're learning pretty much the way I did - I got my start altering old smilies and gradually my work became more and more original as my grasp of how it's done increased.
-
First attempt at a 15-ish frame smilie.
Hang on a sec... Gonna make it so that the frames go faster.
-Alright. I could've sworn that I made the bag start moving as soon as it got hit. Still a decent first attempt IMO.

Hey, I'm actually really proud of that!

Good start.
Needs boxing gloves and a little work on the bag swing timing. ;b;
-
I got inspiration from the :wall: smilie, but I've been able to create all of these using nothing but ;...
Now that I figured out GIMP I probably will be making random smilies a lot. Maybe one day I'll make one good enough for the forums ;lol
-
I wouldn't be surprised.
-
This was another one I made.
I wanted to see how smooth it would be. It doesn't look good. -on second thought, it is actually pretty okay. Assuming you don't take a close look.
I have a feeling it could get annoying if I keep putting everything I make up here though.
Gonna evacuate the forums pretty soon, so if you have an opinion please give it ASAP.
-
Just post everything - it's what this thread is for, and it entertains.
On first impression, that could probably be slower.

I have to start experimenting with bananas...
I think (http://img4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130212211426/sonic/images/d/db/Robotnikjamprofile.png) would make a good first dancing banana.

Wow. He is racist.

And black people Americans with noticeably darker skin cells than a significant portion of the population. Although this does not affect them in anyway.
Time to fish around for smilie inspiration.

Someday you will learn to trust me. ;nod

Made this by editing your dancing Spok. Haven't done more than one frame, but I'm not sure if I like the way the first one turned out.
EDIT: One look and I notice the skin color is off for the hands/head. gonna get to that.

Image>Mode>RGB. Don't forget to put the mode back to Indexed before you save.

meager attempts.
I attempted to skip a few frames by just mirroring which reduced it by 3 frames. It didn't work as I now see.
-
I dunno - that's pretty good. Not dancing exactly like what you based it on is a virtue, if anything.
Needs more mustache, though.

Even after all this, I'm still not sure how to go about making a coughing smilie.
Also gonna see if this turned out okay.

Think about what happens when you cough - your face jerks forward a little, your mouth and eyes open wider, freezes a slit second, then it all withdraws.

So basically choking.

Spasming. A cough is to expel flem.

It's not fair that BUncle gets all the fun.
Here is my attempt at a grossed-out smilie.
The frames build on to eachother for some unknown reason, so I'll include what it came out too and all 3 frames. Doesn't look that good when they stack.

It's a good catch, though - vomiting is the same motion as coughing, except you hold much longer and more comes out.

Yeah. I guess so.
Currently on frame 42 of my latest one. I figure I can edit part of it and then use it later as something else though.

Gonna put this up at a bunch of different FPS speeds.

I just stuck some fingers into my mouth, and found it pretty easy.
You usually jerk your face forward a little during a cough.

I swear I didn't write that last part.
I just stuck some fingers into my mouth, and found it pretty easy.
You usually jerk your face forward a little during a cough.
I have the mouth and pupils go forward during the cough, but this is supposed to be more subtle. "yeah, I did that *cough cough*" And unless the entire smiley moves forward for a cough, it would be hard to do more than that. I guess I'll work on it a little later and see what I come up with.
-
You know, a thing I love about how this ;morganercise turned out is that he looks like it's his turn in a dance-off, even if he's not a very good dancer.
Look at the way he's staring at you while he busts a monotonous move. It's on!
-
I think that the trouble with the coughing smilie is that his hand is so much smaller than his mouth. He couldn't hope to cover it with that baby fist. It looks more like it's applying Chapstick or something.

So I'll do something. Look out tonight, as that'll likely be when it's done.
I have to say, this is fun to do.

No. No you couldn't. ;nod
Generally sarcastic reactions to what I say mean I've been a bit careless with my speech. I also don't like what I typed. Sorry if it came off as a bit ;lynchmob "You forgot to cater to our every smilie need! Lazy bum." -I didn't mean it like that. I just realized how awkward ;excite; was for waiting for a possible coughing.
-
That would be because ;excite; was intended to indicate excitement, not exactly impatience...
-
I wouldn't expect my smilie to be finished tonight.
I've been to busy doing piles of homework.

I'm not feeling up to it tonight, myself...
And in MY case it's not because I'd rather play Sonic made up something about homework...

Then get down to tge business at hand! :whip:

Le pile of homework is done. How unfortunate it is that I'm on EST time and about to sleep. Tomorrow though. This'll be my first smilie with legs. (Or floating feet)

I should change my timezone.

That's better. It looks like a closed hand... only now I think he's snacking on popcorn or something.

And in MY case it's not because I'd rather play Sonic made up something about homework...
7 periods of class. Usually half of them assign homework nightly.
45 minutes of homework usually per class. Thats like, 2-3 hours a night.
I don't care if you don't believe me.
-
Good. ;)
-
Finished this.
"I'm waiting!"
Tried it with and without shoes. I like it better without shoes.
This is stupid. So the last thing I'll say is that I was on winter break for the past 2 weeks. So I had days to spend making smilies.
EDIT: One frame had a bunch of pixels that were the wrong color. Fixed it :)

That conveys impatience!

Yes, but it could be better. I did look back and found where it was being made, it seems he was still tweaking it. It animates nicely no doubt, but could be improved. Right before it hits the upward slant is the most obvious part. Possible practice for me whenever I get bored.
I showed one other guy on the web just for the sake of majority here. Don't worry, he isn't signed up here. The quote isn't real.

That makes sense.
-Any more flaws to report for this? I fixed the legs to be as short as they could while looking decent.
Also, I just realized if this is installed, it would set the standard for feet/legs here. :bike: has no feet.

I recommend the third one. I have no idea what the original FPS was, but that last one looks best.
I can't think of any ways to make it nicer. Also, for the weekend I'm stuck on a craptop (Junky laptop that I have - First comp I ever owned) where GIMP is crashing. I haven't been able to fix it.

Too subtle and too cute, maybe.

Too subtle and too cute, maybe.
Ahh, there it is. One of the biggest differences between my smilies and the forum standard is the size of the eyes and mouth.
Finally noticed. It's also why my envy looks so awkward in comparison to yours.

I don't know anything about your family, and this is your avatar. So i had assumed it was a portrait - ified you.
-
This is him...
-
Okay?
-
Rounder head, shorter nose, more pronounced brow ridges, differently-trimmed beard - not quite the same, and both pretty good likenesses.
-
ShatnerBanana. His head is super blurry though.
At the very least, the banana I made based off your avatar gives me a good blank template for them. I was able to easily convert it into the following:
-Additionally, I tried to convert this Shatner pic into something I could use as a banana, but it was far too blurry.
It's pretty rough anyway, I should do more with it (blue background, extra streaks of color) if I get serious about making a :danc: of it.
-
"When I got bored one day"
The banana template makes it so easy to just put on anything and make a dancing banana out of it. Although there is an illusion in this one. Due to a dumb mistake, her head appears to grow forever.
-
Agreed - it's fun and easy to paste in a head.
Here's a blank with the banana taken out but the arms and legs unaltered.
-
Hmm
I notice I made my template off of your spock, and rather than a banana it's his uniform. That must be why it looks weird compared to :danc:
I'm going to see if a banana from my avatar looks okay. Stand by.
-
That thing you're doing where you mod/build on my work is like the way I learned. ;b;
-
I'm scrapping it. It looks bad. It will only work if I use a real sonic head from one of the 16-bit games.
-And who did you build off of? Just random things from the internet?
EDIT: I noticed that we have different smilie sets. Maybe I should try my hand at making one? Of course, I would have to recreate ever.single.gif here and even theny nobody would use it probably.
-
Random things.
You'll save yourself some surprises if you check Hard edge when you're erasing/cutting things like that out - the indexed mode .gifs use doesn't permit semi-transparencies. (On the other hand, a larger head that's going to display in .jpg or .png for something like an avatar will look less pixelated/better around the edges if Hard edge isn't checked.)
Go ahead and make a set for the learning experience. Knowing you, the base look might be speedy obnoxious and blue...

(On the other hand, a larger head that's going to display in .jpg or .png for something like an avatar will look less pixelated/better around the edges if Hard edge isn't checked.)
Go ahead and make a set for the learning experience. Knowing you, the base look might be speedy obnoxious and blue...
Nah, if I did a set using just the sonic head it would be far too easy. Here is a few emotions I made. Literally all I did was change the mouth/eyes. I mean, the hardest part was finding a decent sprite to use. Which, by the way, every pixel in the one I'm using is actually 3x3 pixels.
What about a bunch of square smilies? It might be unoriginal, especially considering at least one of these (;hero) was based off a square set, but triangles would be strange and circles are overdone. (http://i.imgur.com/SOQdZZo.jpg)

Sure. Give it a try.

Basic emotions. No animation necessary.

I think I'll finish all the other normal emotions tonight. ;) :D :o 8) ??? ::) :P :-[ :-\ :-* :'( :mad: ;lol
Ooh, that might be a daunting task. But I believe in myself.
-
?
You know what, I just noticed I put the frames backwards. But I'm going to leave that there too.
It looks so funny. I also noticed his face gets fatter halfway through.
Rough it is.
Okay, fixed it. Check the third attachment.
The fixing of this smilie might have taken longer than the making of it.

;b;

I think I've almost got all of the most basic emotions.
-
What's that avatar - a dumbbell?
-
Uh, no.
Google+ has these notifications. When you've gotten through all of 'em, my avatar shows up and says "All caught up!"
Besides, it just looks cute ;cute

Ah, good. Thought so.
So a smilie set is just :) ;) :D :( :o 8) ??? ::) :P :-[ :-\ :-* :'( :mad: ;lol ;b; ;q; right?
I'd hate to have to redo the entire forums worth of smilies.

I don't know, actually. sisko might.

Welp, now my YouTube is based off "The Dumbell"
I'm going to make some videos. ^_^ 1 isn't exactly a channel.

These are all of the emotions you'll ever need on a forum. Except maybe guilt and envy. But those aren't forum standard anyway.

Call sisko's attention - I'd like his opinion, 'cause I rather like these.
-
Well, that makes me feel slightly better about myself. Made a decent smilie set...
I'll PM him.
-
PM'd. Now we just wait for the response.
And if so, my mark will forever be left on AC2. Immortality through smilies.
-
I guess we can install another set of smilies..
-
I don't really understand how sets work - like how to install one...
-
Just tell me if any more of them are mandatory for a "set"

Seeing if you can do this better than I could:
-
Oh, that.
-
Oh, that.
Yes.
I'm excited to see the result. :whip:
-
I don't really understand how sets work..
Here is how it works:
We can have as many sets as we want, but there is only one default set and that is the one named 'sisko'. :D
Every user is free to chose the set he/she wants to see on the pages of our forums.
If you're adding smilies with the same code as the default ones but in a new set (have to create one first) you have to be carefull not to overwrite them in all sets (uncheck the option 'Same image for all sets')
-
I don't understand how to assemble a set and install it. The admin interface isn't exactly a wonder of user-friendliness...
-
The admin interface isn't exactly a wonder of user-friendliness...
You're probably right about that.
There's no easy way to add a whole set. You have to add one by one the new smilies giving details about the code and the tooltips for each one. Once everything is done, the set is installed. :P
-
Were you busy with adding smilies just a while ago?
-
Nope. I added ;waiting 23 hours ago.
-
Does this make me an official Smilie-maker of the AC2 Forums?
:D
That cough is still the bane of my smilie-making existence, though. I must perfect it somehow.
-
I dunno about Official, but yer on the boards.
-
I'll take dumbell over the Flux joke.
Personally I think Happybell is more fitting, considering my appearance. Admin's word is law, though...
:unworthy:
-
I tried out the smilie sets. Alienine's set appears to do nothing. STG has a bunch of "Broken Image" icons. (http://alphacentauri2.info/Smileys/PortaMx/tongue2.gif)
Aaron appears to do nothing. Akyhne does nothing. Sisko does nothing. Board default is the default obviously.
-Did we forget to re-install these when the site went down or something?
-
sisko?
-
sisko?
A smilie set is named "sisko."

Yes. My partner is a terrible person.

Umm, wat?
Is he terrible because he named a smilie set after himself?

Yes.
I am appalled at and sickened by his egotism.

Wait, there was no ;lol at the end of that!
He was serious!

Yes.
We cannot communicate properly without adding little pictures to our sentences, and sisko invented Hitler.
-
If you're implying that using little pics in sentences is a bad thing, then I'm going to rethink the hours I've spent here. In any case, i think I'm going to make a bell smilie set to rebel against your iron fist over this forum. Do it for the smilies! And for practice.

Truth if I ever heard it! ;llap

Nothing.

It isn't in the extended smilie list anymore?

Must have mixed up ;spock with ;llap then.

Both are towards the bottom of the pop-up...

Flux, you might find a comparison of the attached with your original creation educational; I opened the file, and it's 14 empty pixels taller than it needed to be, is the main shortcoming.
Smilies need to be as short as possible; the 20 tall I mainly indulge myself to work with is actually taller than standard text, and throws off the line spacing a little. 40 pixels tall is way too much, barring some novelty appeal and you can't figure out how to make it work any shorter.
-Wider than 20 is way less of a problem, though I shaved off two empty pixels worth of width, because, empty. Notice that the filesize is thereby reduced, also good for optimal smilies.

Ahh, you're right. That makes sense. I gave myself too much space.
Also, you messed up the fps. It really can't matter much, though. Except you installed it. His eyes moves too fast. :P
-
See also the edit I was still adding when you quoted.
I don't know why the eyeshift frame is playing so fast; I didn't touch the timing, which is still set at half a second.

This eye movement frame is driving me crazy.

You were already crazy. ;nod

Since I've nothing better to do, I'll take a smilie request.
-Also, how about that set? Is there anything else I need to make for it?

Your own version of everything in the pop-up, maybe?
-
Your own version of everything in the pop-up, maybe?
You mean the "more?"
Oh, don't worry, I have an excuse to keep myself from having to do that many smilies.
"Those aren't the basic emotions. That is your unique work, and my pop-up must be unique as well."
I'll do the nod I guess? It works better on a circular smilie, at least the way you did it.
-And the title. So you DO think I'm a butthole? Or at least what comes out of one?
-
I mean the [more] (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=post;msg=67911;topic=7298.600#).
No.

And finally, a title I like. Decidedly the best way to keep it is to say nothing else.

Attempted a triangular template. It looks better than I thought it would.
EDIT: I forgot to index. Oh well?
-
I like the squares a lot better.
-
Same here. But I was thinking triangles would look terrible.
These aren't HORRIBLE, no, but they aren't anything I'd use normally.
-
They're mighty squat, and the shape doesn't leave you any room to do anything with the eyes/brows.
Inverted might do better...
-
We need an art board.

This is the art board, save modding and specialty stuff...

Okay.
Also, I edited the triangle with your critisicsm. the shape is butchered, but refined it might look better?
I decided I don't like the triangular design anyway.

TMI, dude. TMI.

Gonna go with a happy slice of pizza.

Widening to 25 pixels helps - remember that wide is no problem, provided it's not too tall.
-
Perfect! On a phone currently, but i would add pepperoni if I could

What is considered "professional" smilie making?
I'm guessing the stuff they have on Skype? That dancing smilie is crazy.

I guess it's if you get paid for it - but the smilies on Skype suck.

I guess it's if you get paid for it - but the smilies on Skype suck.
Ehh, they're not that bad. They just need more relevant ones. Like i said, that dancing smilie is pretty impressive.
Theoretically we could both do it given about a day completeky uninterrupted.

I'd never noticed the dancing smilie - it is impressive...

Yeah. Moon Walker plays in infinite loop in my head whenever i see that smile

Skype desperately needs a proper ;lol smilie, though. -Separate from :D.

Something my set lacks. Time to fix GIMP on the ol' craptop.
-
Tell me why again MS paint and Paint.NET can't open GIFS?
It seems stupid. Paint.NET has layers.

I was not in on the decision-making process --- but they may have been thinking they could sell you a more advanced graphics editor for money that way. We are talking about Microsoft...

Wait, Microsoft has other image editors?
The only advanced image editors I can name are GIMP and PhotoShop.
-
If they're not selling something advanced at a ridiculous price, I'd be surprised - maybe google it?
-

If it's Microsoft, and "microsoft image editor" doesn't turn up results quick, I don't think they do.
Apparently up until the early 2000's they had an image editor in Office. (started in office '97) I'm sure it's worthless now, but it probably opens up PCX. I actually have an old disc of Office '97, but it's at my grandparents house I believe. Would be interesting to see.
I could see myself finishing the "Flux" graphic with that just for the novelty of it.
-
Can I get a laugh?
-Those replace frames I don't understand. Looks like that panda tutorial might have a little more usefulness left in it for me.
(for this one I just put my blank template into BU's laugh smilie - Credit to him for the face)

Now do me a ;disappointed smilie - I suddenly have a need.
Alright. I will.
Even when I do finish that other smilie, it still needs a TON of work to look like a cube moving properly.
-
Would you like me to take a whirl at a few frames?
-
Just looking at that face makes me feel bad.
Would you like me to take a whirl at a few frames?
-Yah...
-
Alright. I will.
Even when I do finish that other smilie, it still needs a TON of work to look like a cube moving properly.
-
I'll have a look, then...
-
Look carefully at the frame cropping when you open this and look over what I've done - I left it unoptimized, since it's a WIP. As you see, I left it to you to roll it back. Shouldn't be TOO tough to finish, now...
-
...You might experiment with the frame timing - it might be funnier if the corner-rolling looks awkward instead of bouncy, as slowing the roll to 100ms or so might do. Maybe 100ms as it turns up, and 50 as it turns down. My idea in the first place was making the square roll like a square...
-
Well, now I'm starting to know how the layer-boundary tool works.
What an educational smilie.
(AND frustrating. I did something to mess up all of the good looking frames somehow)
the attachment is to see if it'll display properly this time, btw.
-
The roll is three intermediate frames - 22.5 degrees, 45, and 67.5. Repeat those over and over, using the forward corner touching the bottom as positioning guide and ending in the flat square, then go back and paste the face in. I just loaded up the round original copy/pasted the laugh, and kept track by matching the frame numbers that I pasted from/to.
You'll notice that I made it 9 pixels taller and almost 40 wider - it needed the room to roll square and be funny.

Well, I've just been copying the square rotations of your forward roll...
Takes away from the educational value, something I need. Too late for those ones now, I might finish up with the manual rotation
-
Yeah; just copy/paste mine. That's what I meant. You'll know how to do it yourself next time.

Gonna go with serious. I'll do the last 8 or so frames soon, but I have some things to do.
-
As I keep saying,
ripping off modifying old smilies is how I learned. You're getting very good, very fast, so don't sweat that.
-Now, the way I made the turning squares was to copy one of your sitting-flat ones, erase the face, and rotate exactly 22.5 degrees at a time (actually 22.5, then paste in the flat in the next frame, rotate 45, paste in the flat in the next frame and rotate 67.5 - rotating a rotated copy would have made a sloppy mess). Then I just copy/pasted the same four angles over and over, 'cause a square rotated 90/180/270 degrees looks identical to one unrotated. It's the angle of the face that gives it a sense of true motion.
Once you're finished, you can duplicate the rotating yourself for practice, if you like, and if you're really eager to learn, start from scratch duplicating the face rotations from the stationary ;lol. They came out a bit crappy, you'll have noticed, but who can tell at 60ms while they're moving?
-
They came out a bit crappy, you'll have noticed, but who can tell at 60ms while they're moving?
Yeah, I've noticed with a lot of smilies it's okay to sacrifice a little quality when people really can't tell anyway.
Alright, gonna tarnish you for a sec here...
Look at the background of the BE window in :danc: -The pixels move for no apparent reason.
in ;nod the bright pixels in the middle don't move up/down.
-
You mean under Lal's behind?
-
No - Part of the top gets cropped out. But you widen it just a little to o.
-I also greatly improved the old Svensgaard smilie I made. In the sense that he looks more like a drunk pirate.
-
Huh.
You know, I've been beginning to wonder, lately, if it wasn't time to ditch the BE window version, anyway...
-
I vote old Laljoy.
-
in ;nod the bright pixels in the middle don't move up/down.
By design - if it's spherical and the light source doesn't move, the highlight stays in place even though the face is rotating forward and back.
-
I had just figured the guy had a horrible farmers tan. Silly me.
-
Silly you. ;nod
-
Put up with me for a moment, part of (his) right hand gets cropped out. :danc:

By one pixel in one frame.

Any progress towards finishing this? (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7298.0;attach=14346;image)
-
Actually had the post set up, then my phone went off with your message.
"Going to work on the timing and put in the right faces, but here is the finished rotating square. Thought you'd like to see this. The timing will be 50 ms on the first 2 rolling frames where it goes up, and 100 when it goes down and is flat."
There is still 2 frames left
EDIT: Finishes the rolling part, now for the timing and face. I notice I'll need to do some editing to make it look right. Hmm
The size is really frickin huge.

Now you have a reason to install my set? ;cute
If it's a business, I should get paid.
Boycott Sisko and charge 5 cents a frame?
-
I just don't know how to create a set. The admin interface here is more confusing than GIMP's, and there's infinitely less instructions to google.
Is the last example your favorite, too, or the fast before?
Anything else you'd like to learn?

Wait, does this classify me as an official Smilie artist? In that case, I'd like to learn the way to persuade BU to give out custom ranks.
Ehh, I guess it can't matter much.
And there's certainly others who deserve one much more than me. (COUGHGWILLYCOUGH)

That doesn't say how to create a set.
We have no policy about who's official or how to get that way, nor one for custom titles aside from keep making the forum better with your activity, and suggesting something funny is always a good idea.

"Smilie Prodigy"

Anything else you'd like to learn?
Your tutorials haven't helped me nearly as much as they did with factions for Leaderhead Editing. I think it'd be a cool skill to have, and useful for factions.
So basically, I'd like to learn to PhotoShop and image in GIMP. (GIMPing isn't a thing yet, I believe)

Like shooping photos?
-
Yeah, I do like to 'shoop photos. And my earlier... attempt was super crappy compared to yours.
Your edits, gonna point out the talents, actually make them look like they're wearing headsets/glasses/crowns. The only part I got right IMO is the crown. And thats just a white line with minor blurring on the edges.
-
Hmmm. I've never thought about it in a systematic way - but some basic observations would be that you gotta think about where the light's coming from, and thus, which way the shadows fall - photos are higher rez than anything you can draw, so copy/pasting tiny bits to fill in gaps is essential - and the very edges of a figure blends ever so slightly with the background, so mastery of the Smudge tool is going to be needed.
If you presented something you wanted to alter in a specific way, I could probably tell you more. We do that enough times, and you'll get it licked. You've demonstrated that...
-
Since I'd hate to kill the bad pap crap innocence here, I'll find something else. Just one issue - I'm going to the craptop for a couple days tomorrow.
Going to delete the gimp folder and probably reinstall it manually, then maybe it'll work.
-
This is the most basic thing I could find. Would make a nice learning template.
But probably too easy.
-
Okay, do what to it?
-
Okay, do what to it?
What you did to Gwilly's avatar.
I want to make it look like a talent from SMAC.
-
You'll need a headset to paste in...
-
If I'm not mistaken, the Talent headset is white. But this is just practice anyway.
?
-
I don't know what you need me for...
-
So it's good, then? :D
-
Yeah. Excellent placement, good fit.
-
So uh, is it basically a matter of if I can draw at this point?
-
A little drawing to put yellow lapels on the collar, yes.
The way I put the headband on gwilly was to beach a strip of his forehead (color saturation all the way down, contrast pumped up for shininess), then cyan/blue a spot in the middle. Your subject looks like his forehead is angled up very slightly, by maybe a pixel.
You might choose to make him somewhat blond/lighter brown, and give his hair a center-part...
-
?
-
Headband needs to be a lot wider and lower, try lightening the hair and reducing the color saturation.
-
Headband needs to be a lot wider and lower, try lightening the hair and reducing the color saturation.
Well, the hair is nearing grey on this screen, light brown on a phone, and dark-brown on my other PC.
But I did get GIMP re-installed on this comp. Time to test it.

You had a big weekend?
Oh. I'm sure it won't be hard to find voice clips, then.
I did enjoy my weekend. There was stuff to do. That I wanted to do.
-
The inactive-ness is probably due to me having other things to occupy me.
I only say that because I've gone 2 days without posting.
-
Need a bored smilie...
-
I made this as "waiting" a while ago. It could work.
-
Did you do something to the marquee feature?
For some reason it feels like it plays smoother
now.
-
I took a look at the list of filters GIMP has.
Was able to turn (http://i.imgur.com/IcqGSR0s.jpg)
into whats below.
It almost looks like it's made of clay.
-
;b; I enjoy following your learning curve.
I didn't do anything to the marquee feature. :dunno:
-
I'm starting to consider myself pretty knowledgeable in GIMP, but there's always infinitely more to learn.
-
There's a lot I don't know, too - I've never done a lot of fooling around just to find out what various functions do.
-
There's a lot I don't know, too - I've never done a lot of fooling around just to find out what various functions do.
You mean like me with the filters?
-
Yeah. There's a long selection of special effects in there, most of which I've never tried, or not tried enough to learn how to use right.
-
A very one-sided game of PONG.
-
I like. ;b;

-
Valka wants a ;hug smilie. I think that might be a good idea...
I'm thinking 2 sideview smilies walk up to eachother, hug, and pat on the back.
I'll do it asap. Only releasing if it looks good.
-
Ah, post whatever - I might be able ton help.
-
dont feel like finishing right now, maybe later.
I have a good idea for it, though.
-
That's a start. ;b;
-
Valka wants a ;hug smilie. I think that might be a good idea...
Something with Enya in it perhaps?
-
An Enya attempt ought to at least be amusing...
-
Here's Valka's request....
Also attached one I found on the web that would look pretty nice if you put our blank smilie over it.

I really dislike using the forum - standard template now that I have the square set.
Feedback?
-
I've let Valka know we're kicking around hug smilies.
If you think your square set is ready to go, try to get sisko's attention. What we really need is for him to teach me how to install sets, so I can do it. I get wrapped up in real life a great deal less...
-
Thanks, guys. :D
-
Can you tell us about any image in your head/give feedback on Flux's attempt? I think it would help us with coming up with something good.
-

Nah.
Gonna re-do it with only 2 colors....
-
Hmm. The highlight in the center doesn't really make sense, so that's probably a good idea - minimum file size and all that. I can't really wrap my head around 3D for the square ones.
-

Yeah. Using more-or-less the same method for the ;nod looked like a game of PONG between the top and bottom of the square.
And I just like dark yellow more than black for the faces.
-
For my round ones, I was going for at least semi-3D. I don't know that I succeeded, or that anyone but me finds the house style I came up with pretty, but there it is.

I'll say that it's pretty if you re-do the ;lol smilie and make the  one symmetrical, and fix the mouth of the :'( one, and fix the hand of the :danc: one, and :2nd: :1st: :3rd: have a pixel (edit: 2 pixels that dissapear) that changes color near the bottom, and :bike: has no feet, and...
-
You are hard on an old guy with failing eyesight, you know that? The trophy smilies aren't my work at all, and the bicycle one was profoundly fouled-up before I fixed it to its present crappy state. sisko cycles, or I'd be tempted to get rid of it.
-

-One of the things I like Flux and Nik both for most is being very good sports when I tease them. Everybody likes a good sport.
Guess I'm too hard on an old guy with crappy eyesight. I really don't care about any of those except the  mouth.
-
What's wrong with the mouth?
-
What's wrong with the mouth?
It ain't centered.
-
Well poo - I'll have a look, then.
-
Okay; I don't recall how it came to be set to using Rage3.gif instead of the symmetrical Rage4.gif, but the latter was already uploaded and the oversight has now been corrected.
I can't see the difference unless I look really close.
-Now what's this about fixing ;lol and the mouth of :'( ?
-
The laughing came out crappy and the mouth looks weird; like I said, just my opinion.
but then, even you admitted the laughing came out crappy, even if no one can notice.
-
Do them better, and I'll replace with your versions - I'm not feeling inspired.
-
I can't see the difference unless I look really close.
/me has an vision of BUncle watching said smilie through a microscope. ;cute

Bumped fo' da toitul...

:broc: ? :danc:
-
Is that your final answer?
Got an appointment in .5 hour - be back by about 12:30...
-
no, actually I would prefer to have :b:be ;b; I can use :danc::danc::danc: for my funz
-
Think about what you want - if you go back about halfway through this thread you'll see me teaching Flux how to do his own, BTW.
-
:adore:
-
...That one's already installed, and not by me...
Hey look - let's definitely do this; I'll start you an album (Media button at the top of every page) and I'll upload :broc: and all the variations I did up in the old days [Jesus; six years from being a toxic newb and I have old days] from my extensive collection and you can [img]link at will. Not as convenient as something installed, but animated .gifs do work that way.

I haven't mentioned swimming with the sharks for a few months last year...

I'm only barely allowing this vulgar joke - use sparingly if at all. Asher HAS seen it.

You gotta look at the titles and labels I'm using in the album, BTW.

Good, sir. I'm glad you came back and my labors where not in vain.
I'm almost done for now, but I have to go again in 15 minutes... ;clenchedteeth
-
no worries Buncle :danc::danc::danc::danc: I'm trying to get you some activities.
-
You're displaying somewhat mature judgment about where to spam, and I'm fine if you wreck up the place within those parameters while I'm gone. Clown Posse fun, yes; Clown trampling every thread, no. ;b;
-
They make me mod lots of places because I can handle the line... Thought about making a tuberski but meh.
-
A
proper legal tuber where it's all on-topic replies is too much work...
-
I'm FaceBook friends with Tuberski, BTW...
-
yeah, got a 4-year old running around here so not likely to happen til she's back with her mom anyway.

still not feeling like doing a tuberski though.

It's all good in the Clown'hood, my flying shelled thang.
Wha'd you spend your EC on? Save up to 500 and put it in the Bank - interest compounded daily made me a BILLionare. ;nod
-
I'm wrapped up for brocs, what I had in mind for you now. Ashamed of our banking, are we?
(http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=936) (http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=937) (http://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=938)
At least the rest of the jokes passed the smell test...
-
It let me bank what I had...
-
SOMEbody edited out the last phrase I put in your mouth on your album...
At .08% interest to keep my account from breaking the nets, the bank only starts paying out at 800 EC - no use taking the 10% penalty depositing every 50. Wait for the maximum 500 EC.
-
nobody gonna steal my EC then?
-
Disabled.
-
So why's the low interest? Couldn't I invest in a higher yield venture?
-
See the edit a few posts back on interest rate.
-
so it has to pay out at least 1 EC? (no fractions?) Even so 50 should be paying 4, unless it's 0.08%
-
.08%.
-
There should be an investment mechanic here, would be far more exciting to me :P
-
All ears. Start a thread and let's try to get sisko involved. We'll need tech support.
-
Stumbled over where I have some more. I don't remember posting this, but probably in Uno's thread - and now your album, Jokemonkey.

The dog pushing the blackcoat down.

I cheated on the dog - reduced a silhouette .gif animation I searched, and animated the leap and added the soldier (one of gribbler's DLs wanted it for trolling Albert Speer). All of the last six up there are either requests, trolls, (the Texas is filenamed "OzzyPeedHere" for Slowwhand) or both - except the exploding Wiglaf.
-
Avatar creation.
;morganercise ;hippy ;worship :dunno: :hunter: :whip: :danc:
These seven are done, and look overall good and are pretty useful.
Would you take request for the five human expansion leaders? For instance, Roze 'disappearing' after an interference screen (HSA firewall), Aki with a 'nono' finger wagging, Ulrik with a backstabbing knife animation, Domai with a modban hammer slamming down, and Cha Dawn as a ranting smilie?
-
I was up til past six working on the Mowatt pages -which are getting awesome- so it's a wonder I can form sentences ATM. Pardon me for moving these posts to the right thread; I'd suck at forum housekeeping -and helping make webpages awesome- if is wasn't just a tad OCD...
That's a yes, just probably not today... The aliens ought to be in there for good measure...
-
Descending on rocket exhausts? The Aliens I mean.
Or else jump at each other from both sides, and disappearing in some sort of explosion?
-
One of them doing the customary banana dance when the other dives in and tackles them both out of the frame? Something about trolling or FIGHT! FIGHT! hovertext? Definitely doable.

huh? what?
Oh... well, send me a PM, its more reliable than speculating that I look into a topic that late.
Do you want me to see those smileys? Or do you want me to make some on my own?
Too tired can't tell for sure.

Browse the thread for a lot of my work and note that all the tutorials are posted together in Articles. [shrugs] You showed Trenaker some MAD art skillz, so I thought this thread would be relevant to your interests. ;nod

;lol those are no "mad art skillz", just good tools I accidently used the right way.
I got some "art skillz" with gimp though so yes, I'm quite interested in the whole thematic and will look through this thread.
(BU hates PMs he coulda gotten out of.)
Well, I hope there are no other bumbs I missed, since I don't read every topic that contains new posts.
In this case I suggest an Eadee-bump-thread where you can draw my attention to various threads :)

I might do that.

Okay; very small job to knock together a bored smilie in the BU/AC2 house style ;bored -It's not going to tend to be a good sign if I feel rude enough to use in any serious conversation, to say the least.

Both can be found in the smilie zoo, bottom right. Enjoy...

That's one of my favorite smilie stories today. Did you see the one in Planet Tales?

What breed of dog is the puppy item? I am fairly certain it looks similiar to a Boston Terrier.

That would be because it's a Boston Terrier.

Newly installed the other day: ;wince
Last thing in the smilie popup...

I noticed the new addition to your wall of yellow creations.

That one wasn't a big job - pretty simple, once you know how to cartoon the expression.

Just added to the popup zoo...

E_T, have you noticed the [more] button under the line of smileys on the Reply page?

Tomorrow. I need to go to bed an hour 1/2 ago, but I'm been busy rubbing Uno's face.

Take your time. It's not like I contribute anything to... anything.

I can fiddle with timing and stuff, if you think there's room for improvement...

You've condensed my life into a 3.46 kB gif.

You don't laugh that much.

I vent a lot online, which colors things a bit.

Suggested by Geo and seconded by GodKing.
Now, I'm willing to install this, but I need a code and hovertext. Post your suggestions, please...
-
what about just GuyFawkes, or perhaps VforVendetta?
-
How long is allowed?
I'm merely remarking on the paradox of asking a masked emoji for hovertext.

I think the code can be ;v. No idea how long a hovertext is allowed - but we need to figure out a function/meaning for the thing, and/or come up with a good joke...

Hackjob?
-
Oh, I think I put more into it than that...
-
Well you didn't like my paraphrasing above...
Some quotes that could fit:
There are no coincidences
Symbols are given power by people.
Artists use lies to tell the truth while politicians use them to cover the truth up.
There are no certainties only opportunities
-
The truth will set you free
-
...I'm inclined to let the community decide on this, but I need more input/a final decision...
-
"Symbols are the key to telepathy"
Or change "telepathy" with "empathy" or "society".
-
Ok - I'm going to go with ";
v" and "Remember, remember". Y'all should find it the last thing in the zoo.
-
;v
The hovertext can be changed, of course, should anyone feel strongly about it...
-
HEY FLUX! If Jesus Christ ever lets you swing by for a check, you'll be flattered to know that this ;waiting is official at IALS forum, too.

SO - while I'm back on the latest smilie kick --- I always thought ;modban -code semicolon modban-
kinda looked crap. The edges of the figure looked jagged. The black box it freezes on to clearly display "BANNED" covered the face.
Now uploaded and installed under the code ;ban -that's semicolon ban- replacing the previous in the Zoo. This morning I cleaned it up, fiddled the timing a little, and changed the word to a simple "BAN".
SMF doesn't give me any crap about smilies installed and code will display, but not on the menu, which I wished for at WPC in vBulletin as Sherrif of SmilieTown; would have made the killing spree just a shunning instead, and been MUCH easier. I set the old modban to Hidden, but the code still works and no garbage displays instead in old posts.
-On that note, I observe that members may have ANYthing installed they ask for as a hidden off-menu smilie, just meet community decency and other standards, give me whatever code you fancy and a hovertext, and it's yours. Getting included in the [more] (zoo) menu is a higher standard. of course. Ask away. Supplying the actual .gif you want means (prompt) action when I'm not energetic. -This is in addition to previous declarations that anyone can pretty much have one Official on-menu smilie if they really want it. Something I have to make is, as always, entirely at my personal discretion, but I don't think I exactly have a record of holding out for money and sexual favors.
Ask away.
-
;pics I also yesterday saw the modification I did of a HUGE This Thread Is Not Worthy Without Pics smiley - I deem my considerable reduction Worthy for This Forum, so here -the code's semicolon pics and it's at the bottom of the zoo. Check the hovertext.
-
We've had a technical snafu when I saw an option in the admin panel to update smilie sets - and that added several lines of junk to the Reply Page lineup. -While zapping those, it looks like I got a few of the usual suspects --- what's missing, if anyone notices? There was only barely room for E_T on the row before, and clap and impatient weren't there...
-
Anyone miss this one? One of my very earliest, I think. Big favorite of Ribtickler.
-

;aaa ;pics ;woohoo
-
I'm taking that as urging to install...
Edit: My Mistake. That was already added to the zoo. ;panic -that's semicolon aaa. Semicolon panic now also works.

Attached is Flux's original impatient smiley. It was a pretty job, but I immediately loaded it in GIMP and hit Autocrop, 'cause it was floating two feet off the floor that simple step got it from 40 pixels tall to 26 - it's 28 wide, but wide doesn't make line spacing look awful.
So noting the long legs, I took a run at trimming it down this afternoon. Now it's 20, a proper-height smiley, didn't take much of a quality hit in the process and the filesize is almost halved. ;wait <-
-
I did some cleanup on ;pics, brought it closer to house style, took out the bit on the C that looked a little like G - and reduced the height seven pixels, to 38, so that much less line-breaking. Compare to the attachment.
-
Polytubbies of mid-decade should find this hootful...
-
With dismay, I must admit that I'm suddenly an admin at Poly. Serious.
And since I'm working up a small Christmas smilie set for them, I think I'll add same to the zoo here...
-
How did that happen?
And does that mean you have a part of the advertisement income from the site as well? :P
-
Solver -gleefully- killed all the ads when he moved it to his server and Ming took ownership 1.5 years ago. No $. I made Ming an offer -mostly smilies stuff, some bothammering, it turns out I'm doing some admin housekeeping he's not comfortable with- and here we are. I also made Browd at CFC an offer Sunday to run their AC, but surely nothing will come of that.
Ming really wanted some help w/ non-member management. I think. I'm a techie by comparison.
As soon as I had access, I created another subforum for the Spanish section and gave Astrologix moar powahs. Ming approved after. I seem to have a free hand, but I must show good judgement and not abuse like I could. I also need to not let it become a long-term daily timesink to AC2's detriment.
I rather enjoy tinkering with a forum; it's kinda like doing a puzzle.
---
SO - I have the option, and do use it, to have working smilies installed, but not show on any menu. This is one -> ;shake The implications for the 28 Christmas smilies I have on hand is obvious. They'd be even better if I figured out how to make smilie sets - I bet just create a folder named Christmas Smilies on the server where the other sets are, and then they'd be a button click in the admin panel away...
-
I've made some annoying work for myself - see the Reply page if you come by before I've fixed...

Aaand now to go hide these, and make the Christmas ;xwiglaf and install it. I don't think the sets thing is gonna work. So, a pain switching the lineup in December - maybe I'll just ADD the Christmas stuff to a second Reply box line...
Note that this page has the codes if you quote, so you can find these posts to use these year-round...
-
Nice ones. ;v
-
Thanks buddy.
Okay - that's got everything back in order. The reply page lineup is back, and my Poly adventure is yielding results for AC2 already.
That's not a real, whatyoucallit, complete set of the usual smilie suspects - I could Christmas a few of our own by request...
-
I spent some time this morning fiddling the display order in the zoo. I'd always just dumped in there in order of the dumping, though I'd arranged two lines to feature my own designs together.
So, it struck me that the zoo functions better/more efficiently/more user-friendly if the lines in the display pack tighter, less vertical space taken so you have to scroll down less. So I eyeballed which smilies were tallest on their lines, moving those down.
Hit [more] on the Replay page and see. The zoo now needs way less scrolling.
It is good to attend to these details from time to time...
-
I also spotted that :ches: was in there twice, maybe from when I fixed it up a very long time ago.
I believe Geo noticed, but I also added ;belal to the zoo days ago. Enjoy the hovertext.
Zoo is taking up way less vertical now. You're welcome.
-
I most definitely noticed BELal! ;belal
-
Gentlemen, and more gentlemen, I been all up in it, and I give you an old request. ;evil
I found the smilie I modified this from a real vertical space hog, at 52 pixels high - I got it down to 33. It looks great in the zoo between popcorn and pics!
You're welcome.
-
Hmm. Dunno why I didn't do this 6.5 years ago when sisko installed the BE smilies, but I have now replaced ;hea with ;health...
MUCH better. ;nod
-
:adore:
^You'll all have noticed the great huge thing at the bottom of the zoo^. Cute, but a champion landhog. Just as well be a show on Cartoon Network. A bad show.
Well, I've jiggered it down from 224x103 to 223x69 - and I don't think it's taken a big quality hit. I also shaved 2.3k off the filesize, always a good thing.
;daman <-Me

Trying something - let's see if this works.

Ah. Able to save the file, embedded here.

Oh thy Hydra!
Nice work.
-
Oh, I didn't do that. Just was considering altering it.
-
$#@!
Over an hour of work to a GIMP crash.
-
I been busy.
105 frames, I count 43 seconds - all to make the Poly old-timers laugh.
Gentlemen, I present the Nine Heads of Ming...
-
Did he reaaly have nine lives? :P
-
He had some people over, there was drinking, it was a paahhtay. Some guest -eight or nine, I think- discovered Ming's computer logged on to Poly - and posted filth as him.
It's a really notorious Poly OT incident; Markos banned Ming for a couple weeks, or something like that...
-
Slight upgrade w/ more hydra head-bobbing...
-
Instead of having guests of honor, he had guests of horror. ;lol
Luckily you never let me touch your computer. ;cute
-
You didn't ask.
-I once posted as Uno...
-
;nuke; I've upgraded an old standard w/ animation...
And added a few new. ;6 ;cell ;gandhi ;hypnotoad
And I - ALL HAIL THE HYPNOTOAD.

Also, ;orbit
-To go with ;liftoff
;nod
-
Revamped ;rockon to fit the house style and take that, Rob.
-I also added ;diamond because cool, and ;unity because of course.
I've done a little more order arranging, to pack things even tighter. It's tough to eyeball what's only a little taller than 20x...
Lastly, I went through and deleted a bunch of dupe smilies created by some automatics when I updated sets. It was hogging a bunch of vertical space in the Edit Smilies screen...

It's just, I put a LOT of work into the runup to BE, and ended up feeling let down. I feel somewhat that way about Civ6, too.

Buster's Uncle, could you specificate a needed characteristics of smilies?

Buster's Uncle, could you specificate a needed characteristics of smilies?

Oh, a tiny .jpg would probably work fine, though I've never tried. -But since you probably want a transparent background, .png or .gif format. If it moves, has to be .gif.
If you're really curious, check out the tutorial series in Articles (https://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=articles)... I sense that the forum-graphics force is strong in you...

...I really ought to redo the SMACX leaderheads bigger and all the same size...
-
Well, the Rising Tide expansian leaders are also smaller then the first 8 BE leaders...
-
They just cropped out that way, narrow - same height. ;nod
No refunds. ;nod
-
That's so unAmerican of u. :-\
-
:P
SO; because Protok might benefit from the knowledge, I'm going to describe my process on cutting out Sister Miriam - I'm going through the original seven alphabetized by faction name. -No need for some of this w/ the xfire leaders - there's a nice set of deinterlaced large images of them from the CD in the Planetary pack.
-No refund if something can't be done w/ Photoshop; also, functions are sometimes to be found under different categories than GIMP and often have different names...-
So you start with this, of course:
Now, GIMP has a nice Deinterlace feature. Image>Mode>RGB, then Filters>Enhance>Deinterlace. A popup asks for Keep odd fields or Keep even fields.
Choosing odd yields this: (https://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=7882) and choosing even, this: (https://alphacentauri2.info/MGalleryItem.php?id=7883) -The latter definitely better than odd/dark, but not good.
So what I did was this: opening a Layers box -Windows>Dockable Dialogs>Layers- I duplicated the original interlaced shot I cropped out of the Belivers' faction .pcx. -Layer>Duplicate Layer.- You can also right-click on the layers box to do that.
NOW, I deinterlaced both copies, one even and the other odd. I made sure the upper layer was selected by clicking on it, and slid the Opacity slider up top to 50%.
Then Image>Merge Visible Layers>Clicked Clipped to image in the popup>Merge. The result was nice w/ most of the bad details in the respective deinterlaces smoothed out/corrected, but a teeny bit dark. So, Colors>Brightness-Contrast>upped both exactly 20% and saved the result as a .png.
-
Now, for cutting Miriam out of her background, the point of the whole exercise, I jumped through a few extra hoops to create an art resource and never have to do this again.
First, I'd have had to do -Layer>Transparency>Add Alpha Channel- anyway - that makes the transparent background I'll need. Next, -Layer>Duplicate Layer- which gives me two copies in separate layers. Checking the lower copy invisible -eye icon beside it in the Layers box- and selecting the top one -that layer darkens around the thumbnail when it's the one selected/active- I chose the Eraser Tool from the Toolbox, sized to about 50, and began working around the outside of Miriam. Simple. It's not a great, huge, image, and she has no jagged bits along her edges.
Now the clever bit is this: when I was done, I selected the empty space I'd freed up erasing w/ the Select by Color Tool. Then, -Select>Grow...>(There's a popup)Grow selection by 1-. Now, I select the lower layer, set it to visible and the upper layer to invisible -w/o undoing the select of empty I'd done and expanded on the upper layer- and hit [Delete].
Voilà! Now I have Miriam w/o a background and the background w/o Miriam. To preserve the layers like that w/o using the memory-hogging .xcf or .psd formats, I saved it as a .gif. Now, I'll show you, but it treats that as a two-frame animation - if I was cruel, I'd set the timing to 5ms a frame and give Geo epilepsy...
Anyway, -Image>Mode>Indexed...(popup)>Maximum number of colors: 255. File>Save As...(pop)>make sure whatever filename ends in .gif-.
So the result .gif w/ layers preserved for future use is here:
…Now to cut off Miriam's head - I don't want her body -However, I'm going to use the unindexed .png copy, for the soft edges the format can do, no need for animation, and indexed reduces image size lower quality, if sharper...
-

Cool job! Thanks for sharing your experience Buster's Uncle!
Have you a guide for doing opposite? Making normal graphic to interlaced as SMAC?

...I really ought to redo the SMACX leaderheads bigger and all the same size...
:) I can propose to measure the size by the faces without caps.
-
So you start with this, of course:
Now, GIMP has a nice Deinterlace feature. Image>Mode>RGB, then Filters>Enhance>Deinterlace. A popup asks for Keep odd fields or Keep even fields.
Choosing odd yields this: and choosing even, this: -The latter definitely better than odd/dark, but not good.

Cool job! Thanks for sharing your experience Buster's Uncle!
Have you a guide for doing opposite? Making normal graphic to interlaced as SMAC?

Aki's going to also be unfun what with the curls...

At least Aki's curls are pretty...

Celebrating his 22nd year of being everyone's least favorite, It's Cha.
In my hierarchy of preferable, Cha is staying above the Lal and Morgan.

Marr was almost cooperative.

-Thought of an improvement to Aki, then I'm going in. -The reductions are no trouble at this point...

Oh MAN, I can't get over how much better everyone looks now.
-I gave Marr an extra 5 pixels tall and H'minee three, 'cause their heads are so much taller than human they reduced skinny and looking tiny by comparison. They're not in proportion, but better. Better crop of Lal's head this time, too.
This is a big improvement to all -not least because I worked around the pixelated edges this time- and it's retroactive to every use of the previous versions ever.
I had to evict E_T and the clap smilie from the post form to make room for Aki's curly hair and still keep it to one line...

;nod Most improved human, maybe. Marr probably most improved of all.

I've done a little improvement on ;mindworm -the game angle looked a little high to me- and added a gimme unit to the SMACX: ;former

-Also realized I did inconsistent ordering on the x leaders. Fixed.

Fixed the tiny font gibberish for you.
I guess you noticed the hovertext, GeoModder?
-
I think I found the reason for the smaller fontsize. It seems to happen when I delete the blank lines between quotes and my text, and then add an extra line again.
Saw the new worker smilie first on my tablet, so no, not yet seen the hovertext.
-
…I've done a reduction on ;st and ;stmirror to a less-cumbersome x30...

---Most every time I do anything w/ the smilies, I'm now ending up re-arranging the display order, coming back to this thread to check the zoo, and son on back-and-forth...

I was doing something else and spotted this winner ;cthulu -winner on an Uno forum, anyway. So duly installed.

Yes.

But didn't the Unity leave Earth after 2020, the end year for accumulating score in a game of CivII? :P

It's a screenie from the starship victory in Civ II.
I did put a semi-transparency on the sky...

Ah, that brings up a vague memory. :P
Compared to SMAC, the surface color palette looks similar, the gas giant in the sky is way wrong, and the base would fit right in. 8)

Aiken_Drumn is wearing Olaf from the CFC logo as avatar. I made him a crop of the mic drop -which it turns out XenForo won't run animated avatars- which lead to this:

Noting that I'm in enough of a .gif animating mood that I'm doing it to portraits of Mohawk Games staff people I don't know, I'd point out that this is a good time to put in smilies requests...

Anyway, something happened about a week or so ago in MSEdge that shaved a few pixels off the width of the forum page - which was just enough to bump Conqueror Marr onto a new line on the Reply page. So I demoted the 8) smilie to the popup - which bumped things around enough to ruin being able get the whole selection onscreen at once, which burned an hour or two of mine rearranging things, as I like to be able to just barely see all the smilies at once for user convenience.
Upshot of all this -and the series of very nice small x15 smilies I've made on requests from CFC people- I realize that a lot of the still smiles in the zoo really don't need to be 20x20. Most would be super-easy, individually, to copy the face onto 15x15, and they'd definitely work better in the middle of text that way.
Collectively, it's a big job, all the GIMPing, replacing, and the resultant need to burn time rejiggering the order in the zoo -especially just plain finding all the files from the last 11 years- but I've already been one new smilie from having to do a lot of re-sorting in the Zoo for a long time, and this should free up at least a whole line's worth of space...
-
So does this mean that the server migration is complete and that this site should be comparatively stable again?
-
I wish. I've not been kept informed about that.

SO - I do think most of the size-reduced smilies took a quality hit, but a minor one maybe worth the space saved in the zoo and better line-spacing in posts. The worst part I'm seeing, reviewing a lot of old posts lately, is how often one if the reduced ones is retroactively paired with one still 20x20 - they don't look right side-by-side.
So not a soul has reacted to all the size reductions, and I post to solicit feedback. The membership's druthers tend to be the most important consideration when it comes to forum bells and whistles like that...
