I just stuck some fingers into my mouth, and found it pretty easy.

You usually jerk your face forward a little during a cough.

I have the mouth and pupils go forward during the cough, but this is supposed to be more subtle. "yeah, I did that *cough cough*" And unless the entire smiley moves forward for a cough, it would be hard to do more than that. I guess I'll work on it a little later and see what I come up with.

You know, a thing I love about how this turned out is that he looks like it's his turn in a dance-off, even if he's not a very good dancer.

Look at the way he's staring at you while he busts a monotonous move.  It's on!

I think that the trouble with the coughing smilie is that his hand is so much smaller than his mouth. He couldn't hope to cover it with that baby fist. It looks more like it's applying Chapstick or something.
