Naval artillery duel using altitude ?
« on: June 08, 2014, 01:22:32 AM »
As can be seen in the screenshot my impact skimship and one of the PKs are in a artillery duel. They are getting an altitude bonus, presumably due to being in coastal waters while I'm on ocean ? Is this a bug ? This is with Yitzi's latest patch.

I would agree that it is a bug. It's been there since the original release. I'm not sure if it's been traced.

Just remembered and verified that you also get an altitude bonus for being in port. Another 25%. Doesn't really make a lot of sense either ?

Though I suppose this doesn't come up often as attack is generally ahead of defense by quite a bit, so going attack vs. attack value when you can go attack vs. defense seldom makes sense.

It is known. Supposedly scient was working on it. Not sure if he ever finished it, or released it if he did. Is "if naval unit, altitude = 0" that hard to put in?

Maybe that's base defense?
Your agonizer, please.

I just sent scient a link.  He's been on Skype this weekend, so maybe he'll see it...

My ship in port initiated and got the bonus so kinda not defense I think. Not that I'm really complaining, think this benefits me way more than the AI  ;)

Oops, I'm thinking backwards.  :-[  Are you saying you got an extra 25%, or was it 25% only? What was the elevation difference between your port and the target (shelf depth)?

Edit: Just looking in the alphax.txt, I see there's a 50% bonus for land-based guns vs ship artillery. Could that be a factor? I.e., is a ship in port considered land-based?
Your agonizer, please.

Hope this pic clears it up a bit. Plex Anthill is at 292m, the gaian ship is on ocean shelf with 808m depth.

Edit: Put a Missile Artillery into Plex Anthill, bombarded the gaian ship, got 50% land-based  guns bonus. No altitude bonus. Put arty on +1000m tile and bombarded, again 50% land-based bonus but no altitude bonus  :-\

We are no longer particularly in the business of writing software to perform specific tasks. We now teach the software how to learn, and in the primary bonding process it molds itself around the task to be performed. The feedback loop never really ends, so a tenth year polysentience can be a priceless jewel or a psychotic wreck, but it is the primary bonding process?the childhood, if you will?that has the most far-reaching repercussions.
