I hear a low humming, quiet singing (where are the razorbeaks?),  like a choir almost... dreamy... AAAUGH!

That's the Sporefish. The Razorbeaks were birds, "tending" the fungal stalks, collecting pollen from the many-colored flowers.

Looks like a cricket - too much like what a locust would be.

Just a snippet from the blurbs, why my thinking is razorbeaks are like a hummingbird. Also introducing the glowmite, which brings to my mind a picture of a small dung beetle or a tiny bee.

Observe the Razorbeak as it tends so carefully to the fungal blooms;
just the right bit from the yellow, then a swatch from the pink.
Follow the Glow Mites as they gather and organize the fallen spores.
What higher order guides their work? Mark my words: someone or something
is {managing} the ecology of this planet.

(Which reminds me - I left out the yellow in the fungus...)

Ah. Mixed 'm up with Svensgaard's Razorsharks.

I always took it as more birdlike based on the same quote, but it doesn't actually preclude an insect-like appearance at all.  Still, a concept that didn't make it into the game is hardly binding.

I've fungused up many a landscape shot to make diplomacy landscapes for custom factions - I think the last time I did it was for an MP banner page.  Let's poke around a little...

This one started as a snowscape, so the challenge was in getting small bits of the white to select.  I probably should have done more stippling to mix colors...

Already we have turned all of our critical industries, all of our material resources, over to these...things...these lumps of silver and paste we call nanorobots. And now we propose to teach them intelligence? What, pray tell, will we do when these little homunculi awaken one day announce that they have no further need for us?
