Depends what you want to do with the background.

If you want a background image stretched to cover the whole screen, set background-size: cover;

If you want an unscaled background image with a black background for larger screens, try

Code: [Select]
background-position: top center;
background-image: url(blah);
background-color: black;
background-repeat: no-repeat;

If you don't want the background to scroll with the page, you need to use background-attachment: fixed; as well.

For now, SMAC and the front-template are set to cover (changed 5 min ago, refresh to see).

Stretch as in scale up or STRETCH (wide)?

I fixed the drab background on the current Front Page, BTW.

Scales up while maintaining aspect ratio. See mozilla developer's network entry on background-size.

  And to my surprise, I like it!  Even if it's not blue and green...
Clear, readable, and once I got used to the amberish color, attractive.
All this talk of fungus and worms makes me hungry...

We aims to please.

-I reckon I like it myself better than SMAC/SMACX/SMAX.  It's pretty 90s with the white-on-black, but clear and attractive.

I probably need to brighten up the background image on SMAC...

Try clicking the little arrow in the top right. We need to shift that element right-wards.

Also, theme displays a bit weirdly on wide screens (the arrow and the "Old school SMACing" text disappear, maybe other stuff.

In general, though, pretty cool :)

Checking now...  All I noticed while I was working on the theme is that the collapsed stuff ruins the pagetop layout and look, uncollapsed.

...I think it's acceptable as-is, but I'm moving the pointer a little, and going to put some outside margins back on the greetings and news.  Stay tuned...

I've tweaked the slogan, upshrink image, greetings and news.  They're positioned better now, and if I understand what you were pointing out, putting some margins back on the collapser has enlarged the click window considerably.

-I have to use negative top margin values to get those up top where I need them so they don't push the whole rest of the page down, and so they may still do something weird on larger monitors - but they shouldn't vanish off the sides, at least.  Please advise...

What I did -mostly- today, By Buster's Uncle, age 50
« Reply #521 on: August 30, 2015, 03:16:02 AM »
This is Gone Fishin, pretty close to out-of-the-box, near the beginning of this project:

It's a misleading image, 'cause I cheated and moved BE up over an inch in GIMP to get a category in the thumbnail to look good for the display on the choose a theme page.

(One dead giveaway that a theme is not going to save you a lot of scrolling down is when I have to clip some of the logo off the top in the thumbnail.)

It's a pig, out of the box.  A real top-space hog  ;no -Enterprise is bad that way, too.- and I didn't have the foggiest where to find the special main menu in the .css a month ago, and no idea how to unstack  of the news and greeting crap to take up less top.

Well, I've worked out a lot in the meanwhile, and today's revisiting was gratifying.  (The stuff I needed was tacked on at the very bottom of the code, Draz.)

Another big limit I was up against was needing to leave in enough of the sunset and lake.  Rusty Edge loves this theme - and we all love Rusty.  The illustration makes it look like the slot revealing the shore and sunset just fell in the same place - and let me assure you that there was a lot more to it than that.

And now, I can proudly present, Gone Fishin on a day they were really bitin':

Love it :)

Though there are some holes in this style at the resolution I use (Yellow bars and to the left of the avatar on the top of the screen).

...I have to think about this for a while.  I'm not sure if anything can be done about the bars - that's an oversight in the code I didn't make, though I could probably patch in a gold background color that wouldn't look good, but better, in the gaps, if I knew where to find the line in the code.

The other one is a function of I didn't design it with the greetings and news always uncollapsed in mind, and the stuff I tweaked last night.  Refresh and see if the slogan and upshrink pointer turn up in the vicinity of the top right corner; collapse the extra, and the gap goes away.

...I can always draw a white stripe through the logos to the left, but that's an inelegant solution...

Sadly nothing did appear that I could collapse.

But even with those gaps, I like the theme anyways.  8)

To map the very stuff of life, to look into the genetic mirror and watch a million generations march past. That, friends, is both our curse and our proudest achievement. For it is in reaching to our beginnings that we begin to learn who we truly are.
