The effect becomes pronounced because the sofa remains well-lite and the background has very minimal lighting. The light also causes the colors of the sofa to become better defined and to contrast against the other objects in this photograph.

As I've mentioned before, she's a pretty good singer, too, if you don't mind the cosmic New Age style of music, like Enya on LSD.

The above photo makes her appear dead in the sense that she has become a plastic doll with no facial expression. The sofa this time appears less gaudy. I think this benefits the overall presentation of the photograph.
