Recommend me audio entertainment.
« on: April 29, 2013, 02:15:53 PM »
The new work location has me alone in a building again.

To stave off madness, I need audio entertainment.  And while Dr Horrible, Devils' Carnival, and Repo! The Genetic Opera have been great the last couple weeks, they will grow old and radio reception here is non-existant.

I'm not going to totally snub my nose at MUSIC, per se, especially unique music like above, but it's not really what I'm looking for.

I like most the old time radio stuff, especially The Horror.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-horror!-old-time-radio/id256493679

However, I've heard most of that stuff at least twice.

Libravox and Pseudopod are both great sources for audio stories, but the readers skill level varies greatly, so cannot be relied on.

Not much of a newsy or gossip type myself, so a lot of podcasts tend to bore me.

Have you thought about audio books?

Frankenstein is good that way; a lot of the morbid Victorian stuff is.

Audiobooks are either pricey, limited in the number you can get per month, or wildly varying in reader quality.  (have a fantastic version of Frankenstein, terrible version of Dracula from libravox, and assorted other stuff from them.  )

The Goon Show, classic radio humour from the 50's with Spike Milligan, Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers. There is some online for free, can also be bought from the BBC shop...

I haven't listened to a million audiobooks - but To the Stars, George Takei's autobiography, read by the author in the author's magnificent voice, is definitely worth a listen, at least the first third about growing up in a concentration camp.

Yes, I am saying with a straight face that the parts about Star Trek weren't as good.

The rest would doubtless have been better had he been out of the closet at the time, and not had to leave so much of his life out.  The sad part of that?  I figured out he was gay anyway from that book - no love interests, no romantic complications, ever.  It was way too much, even for a private and classy man, unless he was keeping a secret.

Eh...not into autobiographies.

Was going to ask you about the Ender series.  The boss keeps trying to get me to read those, figured book on tape may be an option, and they're available at the library...

[shrugs]  I've talked about the original series - which I do recommend.  There's some cold-blooded stuff in there that I think you'd like, as well as a certain fair amount of the Card trademark family values in the later ones, which I dunno how you'd like.  You'd definitely enjoy the first book, Ender's Game.

Never heard them read aloud, though, and the Ender's Shadow sequels sound like a lame idea, to me.

Ender's Game definitely is a novel I recommend... Though as audio, probably some scenes may sound too boyish (if they use kid's voices for the star school students).

Those who join us need only give up only half of their humanity?the illogical, ill-tempered, and disordered half, commonly thought of as 'right-brain' functioning. In exchange, the 'left-brain' capacities are increased to undreamed potentials. The tendency of Biologicals to cling instead to their individual personalities can only be attributed to archaic evolutionary tendencies.
