The Red Planet just got even more peaceful – as the Mars rover makes an accidental zen garden.

NASA's Perseverance rover left some picturesque track marks around a rock to create something resembling a Japanese miniature stylized meditation landscape.

In a humorous online post, the rover commented: “Making some accidental zen art as I drive. Mars may be desolate, but it has a certain charm.”

Zen gardens usually feature carefully composed arrangements of rocks, water features, moss, pruned trees and bushes, and uses gravel or sand that is raked to represent ripples in water.

They are intended to imitate the essence of nature, not its actual appearance, and to serve as an aid for meditation.

NASA's Perseverance rover's mission is to look for signs of past microbial life, cache rock and soil samples, and prepare for future human exploration.

We hold life to be sacred, but we also know the foundation of life consists in a stream of codes not so different from the successive frames of a watchvid. Why then cannot we cut one code short here, and start another there? Is life so fragile that it can withstand no tampering? Does the sacred brook no improvement?
