I was trying to figure how they come up with that rate.  50k participants in trial.  Told to wear mask and distance but otherwise go back to work and live normally.  94 get COVID.  How are you isolating the vaccine itself’s effectiveness vs differences in personal behavior?

Don't forget the Double blind.  Maybe it's based on the number of Placebo to real C-19 Infections

Not to mention natural resistence. A lot of infected people don't show symptoms at all.
The only real sign there's been an infection is the uprate of a person's antibody response.

No, I get that.  So, the trial size is 50k.  Let's assume a 50/50 split for ease of math.  That would mean ~10 people who got the vaccine contracted covid vs 84 people in the control group.

I highly doubt it was a 50/50 split, but this is just looking like horrendously low sample size to be declaring an effectiveness to me. I'm only getting the study from reporting though, and there could be a lot of info incorrect or lost in translation.  I'm just kind of curious how they come up with the number.

And this one is an mRNA vaccine.  No such vaccine has ever been approved for human use.

Our governor (Wisconsin) went on TV last night -
The do-nothing legislature and the State Supreme Court's ruling ( with a lame duck making the majority) have tied his hands, but he didn't whine about it.

Since he couldn't issue another lock-down order, he issued an advisory to that effect. We're cooperating, but I can't imagine that everybody will, since the pandemic has been politicized and defying reality is kind of the norm for the Trumpsters.

The numbers are bad. Over 7,000 new cases again yesterday. That puts us 4th behind Illinois, Texas, and California. That's right. With Illinois over 12K, and Milwaukee and Chicago only 90 miles apart, we're both screwed. The two cities are so interconnected they submitted a joint Olympic bid.

WI is a standout in cases per million @ 47,891 , ranking behind South Dakota and Iowa. IF WI were a country it  would be Andorra, Bahrain, Qatar, WI, Belgium.

Utah finally mandated masks, but I'm afraid its too little too late at this point.  I doubt the slow roll of ever more strongly worded wear mask statements is going to jostle people into obeying the mandate, especially when we have at least one sheriff openly stating he won't enforce it.

In happier news from the middle part of The New Abnormal podcast-

[In happier news, famed scientist and physician Eric Topol says the early results about the new COVID vaccine really are a ray of hope. He believes it might even be a so-called “superhuman vaccine… meaning it’s even more powerful than the typical human response,” he tells Molly. “We could see the virus having a hard time finding people to infect by mid-year… This virus will probably be endemic. It'll be here for years. But it's just going to have a harder time finding people.” But don’t throw out your masks or anything, he warns. “They're going to be really important in 2021… First of all, the vaccines, when we talk about 90% efficacy, that's against pneumonia or getting your body infected with illness, it doesn't sterilize the upper respiratory tract. That is the nose. And so you could be a carrier of the virus. You’re going to have to wear a mask because you won't know if the virus is sitting” in your nose. So, not back to normal any time soon. But we’ll take it. ]

I'm having hearing challenges today, but I understood from this podcast that the Pfizer trial was one of the largest ever, except for the current Johnson and Johnson vaccine trial at about 60K. He said other examples of super-human vaccines are measles and tetanus.  I'd like to hear it again. He seemed excited.

The inevitable happened.  I now know somebody on a ventilator. She was a neighbor and best friend to my wife's godmother. I'd see her at confirmations, retirements, my wedding. Last saw her about two years ago. This year I haven't seen many people. Her husband has it too, but is quarantined at home.

On the bright side, she is now off of the ventilator, out of Intensive Care, and back to a regular hospital bed. She is expected to survive.

Good for her.
I hadn't heard of a case where someone was put off the ventilator that quick.

It seemed quick to me, too, but I didn't hear about it right away because my info is 2nd and 3rd hand. I asked.

Timeline - she was  in the hospital with Covid, started feeling better on day 9 and was talking about going home, then she got worse and put on a ventilator on day 10. She remained on the ventilator from a Sunday afternoon until Friday night. I think she's 78 years old.

My uncle turned out to only have flu - my cousin got that straight from the doctor, so maybe it's true.
