New take on "Lost in Space"
« on: March 31, 2018, 01:04:53 AM »
Yes, I used to watch Lost in Space when I was growing up (in Syndication, IIRC, never seen it when originally aired except for the first few episodes).  Way too dumbed down (folks will call this campy... ) and every epi was practically the same and it was boring.  I watched because nothing else on in afternoon to watch (at the time) and I always thought that I had missed an episode (turns out, I hadn't).

The first year, Black & White, IMVHO was the best and it seemd that it should never had gotten color...

Cheesey, Campy and Moronic at times.

The Movie remake had a fairly good start but stumbled and fell and was trod all over by it's wanky story...

But recently, NETFLIX is going to Net Drop the first Season of the Adventures of The Robinson Family, on April 13th.

I've looked at the Trailer and it looks fantastic and I'm in anticipation of it's Net Drop on the 13th.

Hmm.  There's no evidence that anyone on-screen after the first season gave one single. darn. except the boy, the old man, and the robot's voice.  They stayed committed the whole run.  -And were Kirk, McCoy and Spock, too.

Something ... happened to Penny between seasons, and once she had bosoms, the show wouldn't roll with her growing up, and the writers no longer gave her anything to do.  They actually should have killed off all but Will, Smith and Robot, and saved the payroll drain and dead air when anyone else had lines after the first season...

I wasn't a viewer. My mom disliked science fiction, and always turned it off or changed the channel, declaring- " It will give you bad dreams."

But from what I have seen of it ... killing off the cast except for the kid, Dr. Smith, and the robot sounds like an interesting idea for that show.

I was a kid watching the reruns, so I was easily amused and didn't have any critical perspective.  I recall thinking the robot was mildly interesting, as well as the shape of the spaceship.  There was a movie reboot of it 20 years ago.  It was "ok", I say that having rewatched it in the past 2 years, and I'm not shocked they didn't get any further installments.  I think after 20 years you get to try a reboot again.  Problem being, is there anyone left who cares?  And if not, does any new audience care about what is offered, regardless of whether it relates to the original material or not?

The more recent Battlestar Galactica, had very little to do with the original BG.  Lot more 70s cheese in the original.  I think the basic unhappiness of the 2nd one, put me off quite a bit.  I've not watched much of it, and I don't have a reason to care about it.

You put your finger on what was wrongEST about NuBG - it was about nothing but nasty people, just a soap opera about Americans In Space with nothing to actually say, and I stopped caring.  The clones Cylons Clones could have caught them, for all of me, and good riddance.

Teh LiS movie that flopped so spectacularly in the 90s was actually good, and nothing but -Lacey Chabert was hilarious and a little hottie even then- even despite the disappointment that they wrote and filmed a big finale obviously designed for Bill Mummy to play grownup Will and then somehow apparently couldn't close the deal...

You put your finger on what was wrongEST about NuBG - it was about nothing but nasty people, just a soap opera about Americans In Space with nothing to actually say, and I stopped caring.

A friend of mine who followed it for a time, then quit, said they rebooted their production priorities some time after the 1st season.  He said about some "making of" stuff he saw, for some reasons the NuBG producers sat down at a white board, and decided the show "is about the characters".  They went to a character-driven format, as opposed to plot / interesting things happening format, and my friend soon stopped caring after that.  I haven't watched enough of the total series to see that transformation in action, but I do understand "character-driven format" and its potential limitations.  If you don't also have interesting plot it can rapidly come to suck.

One of these days, I probably should crank up NuBG from Season 1 Episode 1 and see how long it takes me to start to yawn.  I wonder if I will notice the point of transition my friend talks about, or if I'll even get that far?

I found Stargate SG-1 tolerably ok.  I was a bona fide fan of Stargate Atlantis and have it all on DVD, paid for with real money.  In Stargate Universe they tried to do the "dark" NuBG thing and I found it off-putting.  Partly I lost access to regular TV in that period, but I also lost interest and didn't have a reason to seek it out.  Their initial situation was mainly about "some jerks", one guy being the biggest jerk in particular.

I think I saw all of them.  They had [poop] ideas about character driven, on top of all that - all characters [jerk, sphincter]s is not a good move...

I sit in my cubicle, here on the motherworld. When I die, they will put me in a box and dispose of it in the cold ground. And in all the million ages to come, I will never breathe, or laugh, or twitch again. So won't you run and play with me here among the teeming mass of humanity? The universe has spared us this moment.
