You might be aware of a robbery earlier today at the Embassy Suites hotel near our campus on Victor Parkway in Livonia. Local police report that an armed man dressed in a clown mask entered the hotel lobby and robbed some of the guests and the front desk clerks. While none of the hotel robbery victims were injured, including a Trinity Health colleague visiting Livonia, this was a serious event.
 
Trinity Health remains alert and vigilant to ensure the safety of our colleagues and visitors to our campus.  Our security team today acted quickly after the robbery to increase their presence outside of our buildings.
 
Trinity Health talked today with Captain Robert Nenciarini at the Livonia Police Department, who said the police are investigating this and other potentially related incidents – including a second armed robbery at the Days Inn at Ann Arbor and Plymouth Rd. He said the suspect is described as a male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, gray sweatpants and a clown mask. He used a newer, blue Chevy Malibu to get away and is considered dangerous.
 
Police recommend that when faced with an armed robber, victims should stay safe by giving them what they ask for.
 
We are confident our campus is safe, and we will continue to work with local law enforcement to monitor the situation.

Police in eastern Pennsylvania are trying to figure out who stabbed a 16-year-old to death during a fight that broke out after a person showed up wearing a clown mask.

Authorities said the incident happened Sunday night around 8:30 p.m. in Reading, located about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

"We urge anyone who was there to contact the Reading police," Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams told the Reading Eagle. "Someone was wearing a clown mask and a fight broke out. Anyone who knows anything about this, please contact the Reading police.

Officials told the newspaper they responded to reports of a person lying on a front porch of a home, and that there was a large crowd in the street. The Reading Eagle identified the victim as Christian Torres, 16, who was a 10th-grader at Reading High School.

Reading Police Chief Andres Dominguez Jr. told the newspaper that investigators believe there are several suspects.

“I believe the issues got out of control,” Dominguez told the Reading Eagle. “Everyone in the neighborhood knows each other."

You know, it would be an interesting study for someone with a lot more time than me.  I've seen police response come from extremely heavy handed (banning clown costumes all together) to basically laughing it off.  I'm curious how effective the differing responses are.
