In my explorations of the 23 and me  website last night I tried to take a look at other customers in the database who shared in my Iberian genes, and it indicated an Azores connection. As I recall, that was a common way to sail to the West Indies from Europe. So I'm going to assume Portugeese seafarers.

Also there was a 0.1% Far East Asian/Native American hit, where I swear there was "none detected" before.  Well, they said it would take longer to get results than it did, so maybe they didn't have all my data processed or entered when they notified me that I could see it. So, maybe there's some validity to the family oral history after all.

Also, they say that some of these areas they may be able to shade in as their data base grows.

Today was a great day.  I'm more interested in the solitude and such than I am catching the most fish. In fact, if I'm catching the most fish, it's because I'm not busy extracting hooks and stowing fish, and instead I'm actually watching my line. In other words- if I'm catching the most fish, others are bitching, which is harsh on my solitude and meditation. Besides, I like the eating better than the catching, and I always eat the most fish.

This morning it was just my niece and I. Her husband was frustrated at not being able to catch fish and a little surly. He stayed in. My wife was ashore fighting the medical bureaucracy on behalf of her mother. Just me and my niece and the wind. Anchors dragged. I caught one fish before she did, and she's better than I am. Then she suddenly pulled in the largest yellow perch I've ever seen, except for TV fishing shows. 11&3/4" . Largest my wife has seen, and this is her 60th anniversary of fishing here. I'm told I'm really good with a landing net ( probably true because I used one for years to catch pigs, so I'm a pro), but she didn't need me. Same with the under regulation bass the day before. She was really happy, and we got rare pictures of her smiling. I caught a 2nd fish, and that was it for the morning.

This evening ( we don't fish during the heat of the afternoon ) we took her husband along again. Except that my wife diagnosed him as needing to learn the techniques with a shorter pole. I don't know if he liked the idea, but he was sporting enough to try. He caught the most fish for the first time ever, and he caught some perch which are the craftiest ones to catch. So his attitude has changed. As for me, I only caught one fish tonight, but there was another landmark. There weren't many boats roaring up and down the lake, the air and water were calm and quiet. So were the fishermen in my boat. We always see bald eagles, but tonight one flew by so close I ( with hearing aids in ) could actually hear it's wings flap. It sounds a lot like a large ceiling fan, or a windmill.

So, today was a great day!  See you guys around.

You need some eagles or sharks. He's afraid of them.

For that matter, somebody tell him that the Great Lakes are full of sharks so that he doesn't fly here next year and close the airports and expressways again. And the skies are full of eagles. They're an aviation hazard, ask any Alaskan.

You can find 'foreign genes' in the weirdest places. For instance, the current population of the Canarian Isles (also a sailing stepstone on the way to the Indies) had a huge influx of Flemish genes a couple centuries ago. This while the Isles already were decidedly Spanish then.

Lotsa stuff going on. Good News and Bad.

Bad- My Dad slid out of his wheel chair. Good- but no harm done. They are ordering him a different one.

Bad- On the last night of our fishing trip my Mother in Law fell getting into my wife's car and broke both bones in her lower right leg and crushed an ankle bone or two. Good- The hospital there was able to put her leg back together with nuts, bolts, and cadaver bone.

Good- The medical people were great human beings. Bad- The hospital still runs on paper.

Bad - I had two cars and a boat to pack (a lot of light bulky stuff is carried in the boat beneath the tarp.) without the help of my wife, because she was busy dealing with her Mom and medical records. Worse, we had extra stuff to haul because 4 people who left early forgot stuff.
Good- My in-laws are aware that it's terribly challenging for me to do tasks like packing/moving/unpacking due to my inner ear disorder and the endless series of balance corrections involved with searching high and low, bending and lifting things of various weights, etc. which that entails. Some years I get motion sickness packing, even when my wife and mother-in-law are gathering and boxing the stuff in the cabin up for me. So one of my sister-in-laws offered to help.
Bad- she asked me for instructions, yet she completely disregarded them, and tended to come and go.
Good- My health has improved since I started the diet and supplementation. I was able to get most everything packed by myself, including the extra gear. I just took breaks as needed. Same with unpacking.

Good- my wife was able to arrange transport to bring her mom home to the nursing home complex. Bad- shortly after we got her moved into the room in the physical rehab section and returned home, they called to tell us they were sending her to the hospital. Worse- she had a heart attack. Worse Yet- her grandson was in the ER at the same time because of a concussion. Good- Things are stable now.

That's the way things have been going since Friday around here. There are more complications, but you get the idea. Fortunately the vacation had me cleared of stress when this started, and I was able to hold my tongue around my SiL.  I may have to do a SiL rant when there is time.  But it seems like the crises are over and it's more a matter of long haul to get back to normal.

The Mother in Law medical drama is getting managed. There may be some improved procedures in the physical rehab section of the nursing home as a result. Ever since I've known my wife I've often wished that she would become a hospital administrator or consultant, and insert some Fortune 500 logic and efficiency into these places. My wife has been considerate enough to give me other tasks ( mostly errands), because I don't really like hanging around hospitals. They have blood and pain and they're haunted with bad memories.

Guess What? You Know Who is coming to a city near me Friday. At least we have time to plan around it.

I'm planning a mixed grill tonight. The nieces should be over, and some of them will not have eaten.

[Sleezebag] and I managed to stay out of each other's way.
Box of Rocks has mostly made herself scarce and quiet.
I got sick for the first time this calendar year ( drinking broth and soup, mostly) then  grilled on consecutive nights, and dined out 3 times last week. Did some repairs and gardening, cleared the new growth from the foot path to the pond where I take my walks. A great week.

Today's plan is cooking and laundry. Cleaners are coming tomorrow.

Things are better with my MiL now after some meds/timing adjustments. She wants to get better and is working towards recovery. My nephew is apparently back to normal.

In the meanwhile a 2nd cousin was run over as a pedestrian by a FedEx truck. She died. Her parents lost her older brother perhaps 5 years ago, under mysterious circumstances. I suspect that was a suicide or OD, but don't know. He was depressed over a failed relationship and living alone. There is one son left, the youngest. I've been procrastinating on a sympathy card because I don't know what to
say to the parents. Well, it's a reminder to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you while you still can.

Some of the nieces are camping in the UP. That's the upper peninsula of Michigan, and it's pronounced as "you pee." So we've got guest cats. There's a lot of noise/stuff getting knocked over at all hours. 

Got my teeth cleaned yesterday. I'm fine from a cavity standpoint for another consecutive checkup. I credit the diet. I may get leaves stuck between my teeth, but I don't get them coated with sugar and starch. The downside is that one of my molars that has a lot of fillings has cracked and is temp sensitive. So it's time for a crown.

Man, sorry to hear about your cuz, do you know what the circumstances of the accident are and if the immediate family is going to seek some form of legal recourse?

If anything, send two cards, one to the family and another to the remaining sibling, as there are likely things to say that would mean more to him than anyone else.

As for my second cousin, part of the tragedy is that her parents heard about it on the news, instead of being notified by a professional or family member that she wasn't alive any more. She was married to the Melon family's game keeper, and lived on the preserve. My understanding is that she delivered some of the Melon kids to bible school every day. I just now got up the nerve to look up the news story.

I suspect she was in the cross walk at the time, judging by the photo. I don't know what her parents and husband are going to do, but I'm sure the ambulance chasers have contacted them by now. Or maybe the Melons have a law firm on retainer and want to help. That wouldn't surprise me.

She was kind, she was good, she was responsible. I wish we had a country full of Pams. Uh... Another time.
