Allergies?
« on: February 11, 2016, 02:03:21 PM »
So.  Um.  Yeah.

The "Fog" outside is so dense I can't see much of anything.  Of course, the weather calling it fog isn't really changing the fact that it's pollution.

Couple years ago, forest fires were rampant and I developed some fairly bad allergies to wood smoke, and the pollution tends to trigger them, making it hurt to breath, and making me wake up with lungfulls of crap.

Otherwise, I'm deathly allergic to melons, which we discovered 2 years ago means I'm also allergic to ragweed, sunflower pollen, and a host of flowering plants we planted in the garden.  All the same protein I'm allergic to.  Awesome.  Oh, and corn silk, too.

Household dust makes me sick to death.  I'm not a lot of use when it comes to cleaning.

I didn't find the option I was looking for, but I have some allergies. None of 'em would be fatal, they're just annoying and tied to some quiet common stuff.

For example there is Millet, can't eat that without getting an annoying rash.

Second Wool twine. This is quite strange, I could hug a sheep or sleep on a Sheep fur without any problems. But probably they do something to sheep wool when they make twine of it that gives me an itch on the whole body just for touching it for a few seconds. And if I stay in contact for over a minute or so I get a rash where I'm exposed to the twines or something made of wool twine.
However cotton twine is fine for me... so thats what I wear most of the time.

Strong chemical smells like cleaning fluids and perfumes really get to me, too.  Hospitals and churches are a nightmare.

This is a “top cities” contest no one wants to win. But northern Utah cities are easily dominating the competition this week for the nation’s worst air quality.

Salt Lake City on Thursday, Feb. 11, shouldered into the top spot with a red, “unhealthy” rating on the federal government’s Air Quality Index. Places three through five are held by Brigham City, Logan and Ogden.

Franklin, Idaho — just north of the Utah-Idaho line near Logan — is No. 2.

The American College of Cardiology says air pollution can trigger heart attacks, stroke and other harmful health effects.

The National Weather Service said today fog and urban haze over the Wasatch Front may weaken by Sunday.

However, high levels of air pollution are still expected in northern Utah on Friday, Feb. 12. The government’s Air Quality Index says the U.S. cities expected to see the worst conditions that day are Salt Lake City, Brigham City, Logan, Ogden and Provo.

And if I stay in contact for over a minute or so I get a rash where I'm exposed to the twines or something made of wool twine.

That isn't strange at all. I found out I've got a wool allergy almost 30 years ago when I worked in a craft co-operative.

A woman came in and asked if anyone there could stitch together a plastic canvas kit for her, as she wanted to give it to someone as a gift but had neither the time nor inclination to learn how to do it herself. Since plastic canvas is my specialty, I said I'd do it (paid for my time, of course).

Well, this was in July - a bad time of year for me to work with yarn of any kind, since I don't handle heat well. But a paying job was a paying job, so I buckled down anyway... and discovered that my fingers were becoming tingly to the point of pain, and they were red. Washing didn't help. About halfway throgh the project it finally occurred to me to check what kind of yarn the kit included, and it turned out to be wool.

Dammit. I'd never had this problem since the last time I'd done a needlepoint kit (those come with real wool, too) and it hadn't occurred that my problem was wool.

Since wearing gloves in July here is just not an option, I forced myself through the rest of the kit (if I'd had the time I'd have strongly considered abandoning it and starting over with acrylic yarn, but there wasn't time).

Since then I've found that I can't touch any kind of yarn or fabric that has any kind of wool content. That has meant throwing out some partially-completed projects, giving away some beautiful yarn, and getting rid of clothing and other art supplies.

Even in the SCA when people were complaining about my cape not being authentic and I told them I couldn't wear a wool cape because of my allergies, they didn't get it. "Put in a liner," they said.

"I'd still have to touch it to put it on, and wouldn't be able to prevent accidentally touching it after," I told them. "I can't wear wool, and you're just going to have to overlook synthetics in this case."

Some people don't get that there are some things for which the pain simply isn't worth it.

...I understand childhood allergies had something to do with the nerve damage that has made me hard of hearing for as long as I remember.  I can sketch, from memory, a pretty good diagram of the anatomy of the human ear in section - not from any study of the subject, but that's how much time I spent in the offices of various ear, nose and throat specialists who were treating my allergies from the age of five to 15.  They all had the same posters on the walls.  It do not miss the shots at all.

And to amplify on something I said two posts ago, every forth or fifth church lady wears enough perfume to choke a Turkish whorehouse.  The men aren't a lot better with the cheap cologne.

From the smell alone, I don't know how anyone ever gets well in a hospital, or could spend much time in a church and still associate it with going to Heaven.

I've had sinus problems for so long I am hypersensitive to smells. My friends are amused
by my reaction to gummy-worms.

The hospitals around here have signs up asking people to not wear perfume or cologne when visiting patients.

One of my typing clients (who I only typed for once, by my decision) must have dumped half a bottle of cologne on himself before coming over. In his mind, female typist = date, and it was a shock to him to discover someone a lot older, with no interest whatsoever in dating a client. I had to air out his papers before dealing with them.

Not the first time for this. I knew exactly which of my clients were smokers, and the very worst of them resulted in their papers being attached to the clothesline outside, to rid them of as much smoke smell as possible before I could deal with them.

I think I'd rather smell the rot and poop in hospitals than whatever they scrub the places down with.

The worst part of it is that I can a little, under the fumes making my head hurt.

I suffer from certain allergies that originate from specifical types of grasses that produce pollen. I suffer from runny noses, dry eyes, watery eyes, and sneezing. I also have some level sensitivity from something cats carry (fur or material in the fur). I rarely suffer the same issues around dogs.

Oh, I have to add a severe allergy against Mandalorians.

If they're mentioned to often in a conversation I get really upset and freak out ^^'

Mankind has been blind for thousands of years?for all of its history. We have come to a place whose wonders are a hundred-fold more amazing than anything on Earth. Around us is clear evidence of the will of a higher power. I bring the Vision to the blind eyes of men. I bring the Word to the deaf ears of men. I will make them see it. I will make them hear it.
