So, will you post some pics of the final product, while they are being modeled by someone (Maybe Buster?).  For one, it would give us some better idea of scale.

I will ask her for some action pics.  That's a good idea.  -But the painting and ear-making schedules won't be under my control...

Wow, it is really coming together. For the ears, I had a hair brained idea: you could possibly go in and add a small wooden rod to the top corners of the mask, about as long as the top of each ear. It would be partly on the mask, with most of the rod sticking out to the sides of the mask horizontally.  You could  fold the top half of the ears over the rod. In person I could explain it better.

I replied:
"😁  I got this.

The mask is dry; there's a couple hours work left getting off the form in one piece -not easy, I think- and trimming.  I should have pics of what I came up with for attachment today..."

Lord did it fight coming off the base.

I knew it would, of course -even expected to have to cut the lower jaw- but now I need to repair that and dry the repair before I can trim and work in the ear support...

...I need to do three layers, roughly, on the me base to glue inside the Dixie mask, so it'll sit on a human face in comfort...

Ok, and the initial trim came out distressingly cockeyed, with the right side low on the outside, and the left side high - just as well use attaching the inner shell to put some back...

 

-Guess that throws getting it into a shape I can call finished 'til tomorrow...

On reflection last night, I separated the Dixie main mask from the lining to dry.

They were going to bond weakly that way.  I wouldn't be able to get at a lot of interior that wasn't completely enclosed to latex-line.  I needed to do some trimming -mostly eyes- that would be awkward that way.  And a big one, the lining was going to take forever to dry completely covered like that.

I've gotten this and that done now that was better done on separate pieces.

So these linings ought to cover most of the interior needing it and be dry enough in a half hour to glue together good.  Got a pile of clothespins waiting to use as gentle clamps...

Probably ought to give it three hours or so to dry/bond - but maybe no surprises and I can get this finished today...

Dry and trimmed to my satisfaction...

Mache-ing in the wire for mounting the ears along the top was part of the plan.  Covering the gaps between the outer mask and the lining was not - but does look slicker in the back.

This should be dry enough in another hour for latexing the inside and signing it with a JKStudio label, and -finally- be finished for Princess Pretty Perfect's pleasure - the little holes for stringing it are already punched.

About an hour's work with rasp and sandpaper has done considerable to smooth and regularize the slopes of the space helmet.

I need to do a little building up on the facial features -the nostrils came out sunken in, and there's scratches that don't show much in these photos- and there's sanding left to do on the sides, but I think I can do a mask on this tomorrow...

Several more hours sanding, painting on more plaster, waiting for that to dry and more sanding, and I think the difference shows, despite all that white being tough to photograph.

I'm at the point where I'm thinking about perfection versus being a rice-puller...  As always, my timetable projections for mask-crafting were incompetent, but it'll be dry as a bone in the morning, and I can't sand on it forever, perfection being impossible and my rice-puller nature being a real thing I fight.
