I'm reading the wiki-

"According to writer Mark Evanier, Jack Kirby modelled Darkseid's face on actor Jack Palance.[3]"

"Darkseid IS" reminded me of "Eldrad must live." Well I guess they were both made of rock...

Oh, the changes I made yesterday to the face itself made it LESS Darkseid, but the space helmet is pretty Him...

SO-

The next stage after the foil and duct tape shot of last night was to be sculptamold/spitwad to bulk out and smooth/regularize the outline.  (Sculpey is too doggon dear for that much area.)  I was worrying if the spitwad was going to stick to the tape well enough.

This morning, my semiconscious had decided to enclose it in a layer of mache, which ought to stick to both reasonably well.

It's a lumpy mess, if you look close, and the original Mars Face has amazingly regular sides to make such straight shadows - and the flat plateau bits need to sit higher and higher on the face edge than this as you go from the top to the chin, which is why the enclosing strips ride higher towards the bottom.  I embarked on adding the sculptamold without needing to wait for this to dry...

This next is all in the past for me, but the pics aren't processed yet.  Stay tuned...

Sometimes, you have to take things from an Artistic point of view, so as to get it to a final work...

You're not wrong - sometimes the trick is being able to say "good enough" and move on to the next thing...

Yes! She was so hot. What a way to conclude her role there. While I haven't kept up with the series, that was my favorite episode of the Pertwee-Baker era.

My all time favorite of the New Series is, "The Girl in the Fireplace".

If you described that one to me, I'd think it sounded suck - but somehow it came together to make a good episode.

We have a Dr. Who thread somewhere here...

Hey - it just hit me, cat porch thoughts, that I've been overthinking the size of the Mars Face space helmet; that's a mask trimming non-issue...

So late this morning, I cut away the excess paper under the base in progress.  I trimmed a little off the edges of the base itself, and extracted the core face and applied a thickish layer of latex - I'm going to mache thickly over the face along with the space helmet, and keep the face as a separate piece.  That should make sense later.

I've commenced finishing details in sculpey around the edge of the face...

This shot is a few minutes further along in the finishing than the rest.

Mostly for my own viewing, because I seem to spot problems after I've posted, here it is baked and ready:

The plateau edge's still higher at the ends and sags a little in the middle, but those would only be a problem if the light angle in the original was super-extreme.  I think  this will do.

I decided to put another latex layer on the core face; when that's dry -and it's already had over an hour in front of the dehumidifier- I start mache-ing to enclose and make the over-face.

Y'know, I always complain about the interval between getting a base basically made and getting the latex coat thick enough to be resilient/reliable.  It's the waiting for a mask to dry problem writ about 21 times/layers over.  The bad part of smearing on latex -no big deal of just itself- is all that repetition and wait, plus some elevated stress not wanting to get another drip on another garment.  There's no getting the spot out.

-And tomorrow, roughly, I start another week of that with the Mars Face.

That said, the newsprint is almost completely obscured on Johnny Devil -which seems to be enough on a flexible shell base- and the re-coating of Crone and Johnny started only two layers behind that.  Doing three at the same time takes about a half hour each round of layers.  Plaster forms definitely need more thickness to work and hold up, so JD is probably done tomorrow, and the other two probably a couple days after.  Just the Mars Face won't be so bad, come Thursday.

Much as I grouse about spending so much time on prep and the prep drying, there's a lot of charm in making a new thing, not so much in mache-ing the umpteenth copy of something.  I'm thinking Buster's Dixie Dog is next in the pipeline, then - and maybe lay down and get my mom to plaster gauze my face for a full-face cast.  (You can do your upper face yourself in a mirror sitting up okay, provided you don't mind improvising eyes after it's off - but even un-bearded, gravity will defeat trying to get under the chin for a mold worth having.)  It hits me as I type that part of the charm is that it'll keep me busy a while - I'll sand/carve the casting down to -an improved version of- my chin and jaw, then maybe build a beard on a shell.

All that ought to keep me busy for another three weeks or more...

I see it, now that you point it out.

-Another reason it's good I decided to keep the core face, The Martian, separate, then...

Most of the way through the second layer of, maybe, six.  I'll be done about bedtime, and can let it dry through the night...

Needs two or three more layers over the face, but it's way past my bedtime, and time drying before I resume tomorrow won't hurt anything.  I think it's looking good.

* Random quote

You see in this dome the intermingling of native and earth plants. Outside, they are competitors, struggling over the trace elements required for life. Often, one destroys the other. Here, they are tended with care and kept well nourished. They thrive together, and the native fungus does not unleash its terrible defenses. As you can see, competition is unnecessary when resources are plentiful and population growth is controlled.
