You can tell where the sculpey is underneath in the first shot from where the latex hasn't already dried...

Funny how something that came out so good went so easy.

There's not a lot to show or tell about dabbing latex and waiting for it to dry.

Couple layers on the Johnny Devil, one more before bed.

I did strip the Crone and Johnny, and cautiously began with thick application of uncut latex -the colored stuff I usually work with is thinned with water, because it applies more evenly- around the top and bottom edge to anchor the rest.  Followed up with thick base layers of uncut.  Regular layers in a moment.

I finally did repairs on two old masks that have waited a long time.

And-

The space helmet is just too big, at least on the sides.  Needs a lot of smoothing yet, too.  But this is closer to what I have in mind...

This is a shot of the inside of the Mars Face base shell while I was halfway through taking in the brow.  Posted now because, look at that talon on my left thumb. I like to grow it out for a tool that's always handy - I don't get out of the house to freak out the squares much, so no problem there.  -Also posted because make Uno happy.

I bring this up because it broke off yesterday afternoon.  This one lasted a year, which I think is my record; they usually break after six months.

I keep going to pry at something, and it's not there... :(

I'm gonna have to start over with the Mars Face - the plaster periphery is just too fragile for handling during shaping, and needs too much of that.  Aluminum foil and sculpey, I guess...

The mask at the core of the Mars Face got wet and took a beating during all the plaster misadventure, so-

I'm gonna glue the new bit on top of the old when they're both dry - and I think build up the brow a little and maybe some other stuff, to sorta bring out a vague only vaguely human quality, and get a silhouette more in line with the original.

I'm also covering the face with foil while I build the space helmet around it.

-Two hours in right-brain arting early afternoon had a marvelous effect on cooling a foul temper, BTW...

The latexing of Johnny, Crone, and JohnnyDevil proceeds apace.  Meanwhile, I've bonded the parts together of the base mask-

I'm probably going to a ridiculous amount of trouble with very little of this is going to show...

I do believe this is more like it...

-In fact, this is so obviously handy for sundry monster applications that I'm going to have to make it with the space helmet separate...

SO-

The next stage after the foil and duct tape shot of last night was to be sculptamold/spitwad to bulk out and smooth/regularize the outline.  (Sculpey is too doggon dear for that much area.)  I was worrying if the spitwad was going to stick to the tape well enough.

This morning, my semiconscious had decided to enclose it in a layer of mache, which ought to stick to both reasonably well.

It's a lumpy mess, if you look close, and the original Mars Face has amazingly regular sides to make such straight shadows - and the flat plateau bits need to sit higher and higher on the face edge than this as you go from the top to the chin, which is why the enclosing strips ride higher towards the bottom.  I embarked on adding the sculptamold without needing to wait for this to dry...

This next is all in the past for me, but the pics aren't processed yet.  Stay tuned...

-I regret that no one else here is up on their comics enough to see these shots and think "Darkseid IS"...

It would be nice to be able to take process shots while I applied the spitwad and enclosed it in strips, and smoothed/shaped the result - but no chance; if I didn't go as fast as I could, the spitwad would firm up before I got it shaped...

Some of you might recall that in the past I've mentioned the only way I know to get a smooth surface with spitwad, when freehand shaping, -used in a mold it tends to bubble flaws a little, but is different/better- is to put strips over it while still wet, and smooth/shape that before any of it dries too much.  -The last time I tried, wrestling mask over Uno's face, I was too slow.-  I once had very good results shaping a jawline bulge that way the last time Momma made a carman, using my face molds; my upper face, but Mylochka's jawline wasn't butch enough.

-I doubt all these profile shots are all that entertaining for y'all, but I find all the pics I've posted of late terribly helpful for spotting stuff.  -For instance, the ledge needs more leveling and over the brow, flattening.  I've got it built up to where I don't mind using that much sculpey...

Dunno - this might be a hair too big, and the symmetry could be a little better.  Spitwad doesn't sand that well even without the complications of the enclosing strips, but I might be able to cut/carve a tad at the edges.

-But the back of my head will have a little time to work on that; I need to keep my hands off and let it dry for a day or more.  It'll be set up firm enough, I think, in about two hours to move off my desk and in front of the dehumidifier...

Darkseid IS.

I'm reading the wiki-

"According to writer Mark Evanier, Jack Kirby modelled Darkseid's face on actor Jack Palance.[3]"

"Darkseid IS" reminded me of "Eldrad must live." Well I guess they were both made of rock...
