...I'm at the point, when the latest latex layer on Styrofoam Johnny is dry tonight, to start with the paper mache on him - and the Mylochka base for the devil mask.  I've been dreading opening the tupperware in the fridge with the paste, as that ain't been opened since mid-September of 2017, and I bet it's turned by now, despite all the salt and rubbing alcohol I stirred in to prevent just that...

It's built up less than I'd intended, but I think it'll do...







Smoothing out the irregularities won't be much of a challenge.  The nature of this particular face is forgiving, since the skin is supposed to be crinkley.

The first picture looked like an interesting terrain feature, for a second (I've been playing a lot of The Long Dark recently).

Here's how I spent the last six hours:



Made a new batch of paste after supper, and greased Johnny and Mylochka, applying separation strips, most of them a thin white tissue...

I never want to have to do a whole head again - it wouldn't lay face up on the table, and I had to hold it in my lap, which was messy and slow.  I'm picking bits of dried paste off my legs between typing sentences. 

Anyway, now I've got this:





I reckon I can commence work on the Devil shell over Mylochka tomorrow - that's the project been kicking around the back of my head for three months, maybe four...  I've tackled my project ideas in reverse order, actually.

...Y'know, it hits me that if Mylochka can dig up some reddish sandstone-texture paint, I could easily do up the Face on Mars, and we might could unload a crapton of those...

-And the space helmet would double as a pharaonic headdress, painted that way.  I seriously think I'll look into this...

-I got, BTW, the mold-mask off Johnny just fine hours ago - I'm making sure it's good and completely dry before I proceed.

Congrats! A Mars face mask sounds like an interesting idea.

This and that is coming along.  Crone is several latex layers along, and the lining of the Johnny mold will be ready for casting by lunchtime.



I never woke up good yesterday, so work on the Devil shell has yet to commence.  I'm feeling a good deal peppier today already, so should happen today.

Like the Johnny mold, I went for extra construction paper and a lot of layers overall, for strength - it's better if the finished shell is sturdy enough to work on without laying on the form it was built over.  Sometimes I have something else in progress on Mylochka and, for example, the skull shell built over it sags a lot at the temples to mask on without the extra support...
