Adding a little plain plaster to the outside seems to make mothers more durable and snugger...

This one has the same shape problem -a chin and neck- that resulted in damage to the Buster bust mold while trying to get it out of the mother. I hate to, but I'll probably have to cut the bottom front open to get smooth extraction.

It'll be dry in an hour or so...

Trying to make a gloss/lens over the eyes - and then lap the eyelids over that...

These are the two that blew apart on Momma's first try, glued together. She says they're good enough to use in making a pair of doll shoes.

I took it to show Momma at lunch after I added the eyelids but before I put on the base coat of latex -and this was hours ago, 'cause I did give the additions a little time to cure before proceeding- and she said "It just keeps looking more real".

-But you should see one of those doll crafter magazines; the covers almost always feature a doll that triggers serious uncanny valley...

So here's the Ken statue as I found him in storage, with the sharpen and contrast functions cranked up to show the cracks.

-And here he is when I started taking pictures of my work on it last night, in shots similarly processed for fair comparison. It may not jump out in the pics, but I've done a little smoothing on the face.

...And then I worked on it a little more, and the left arm volunteered to come off right under the shoulder...

The whole thing needs meticulous sanding, of course, not an easy job with the various densities of glued-together breaks and painted-on plaster over the core. ISTR starting with some sort of casting of an actual Ken, then spending a LOT of time filling in the joints and improving the anatomy. Clearly enough, I'm aiming for sort of a "Michelangelo's Ken D'Milo" thing.

Getting the hand fixed just so, and the wrist tapered right, is going to be a real girldog.

I've got a pedestal ready, though.

I'm planning to embed the legs in one of those amorphous masses sculptors often resort to in stone because limbs break off. I've about decided to skip the feet entirely...

A pity the latex coat isn't working out - the color is going just the way I wanted. If it was smoother and showed any inclination to cling to the substrate, I'd add a little blush/highlights in the right places and it'd be good to go.

Somehow reminds me of Ash's head sitting on the table. (Alien, synthetic)

edit:

Even the...joint/flange around the neck is similar to the prosthetic piece he's sticking his head through.

A few nights poor sleep has gotten me way behind on processing photos... Here's the hand on the Ken statue as of yesterday afternoon:

That's not good enough, but nearly all that's practical in any realistic time frame, what with fingers falling off if I try to work them too finely and thin. He's actually been mounted on his pedestal now. and there's pics, but I need to be in the bathtub an hour ago and in bed in ten minutes, or I definitely won't get enough sleep again.

I definitely included the last shot for Geo's enjoyment.

The annual town woo-woo street festival is tomorrow, and I'm going to be at the gallery demonstrating --- I haven't decided just what, yet. -Which will get me a lot further behind on pics...
