Stupid memory time.

Mom had a candle we lit on christmas eve.  It was one of those '7 day candles' in the glass jar with a fancy jeebus design on it.  Always loved that thing.  I remember refilling it one year, but don't recall seeing it much after that.  Dad started working regular and we started getting fancy stuff.  I missed the candle.

I actually did an Olmec-head candle a long time ago - no idea what became of it, though.  That's actually a plaster casting in back, w/ a bit of wick glued on top in prep for making a mold.  I need to score a lot more Amazing Mold Putty first...

Those Massive Head-wound Ken candles I've talked about, incidentally, were painted - on some of them, the latex paint left a shell after use, and I was able to refill them.  -Others, the paint caught fire, so I can't recommend trying this for safety reasons...

Use enamel paint.

I was instructed a couple of months ago to take about six inches off the top of the holly.

For about the last month, when we have a rainy week, I have to go out and pinch off the buds on the new shoots on top every few days - I took a lot longer just now catching up on that, the second rainy day in a row, than I did taking this picture.

Still hoping to get the bottom to fill in...

Here's a little something I'm fixin' to get back to...

Back in mid-December, just as I was running out of mood-gas, I'd been making candles and thinking about designs for more - I decided on a skull and a laughing Buddha, and got as far as crumpling up an aluminum foil core for the skull before my initiative ran out.

-I've been working on a website/marketing/promotion for a cousin for about a week now - and her girlfriend came in for Memorial Day weekend - and left this morning, but now the cousin's stepdad has just dropped dead, and so there goes my chance of timely feedback again after a frustrating weekend of waiting, also waiting since Friday for input from my brother on a business card design for our art collective --- and screw projects that involve waiting on anyone.  Time to do something by myself instead of stewing in my impatience and having it ruin my renewed mood.

Any ideas that would make nice candles?  I'm aiming for palm-size or a bit smaller.  Heads are basically a good shape for that - animal or human, though Uno; I'm not terribly interested in doing the boogerman.  -Not opposed, exactly, but rawhead-and-bloodybones is nothing I want that badly to spend a day staring/poking at...

Any ideas, though?

To be honest, I've never understood the whole shaped candle...thing.  The carving part gets ruined if you light them.

So, I'd be partial to ironic types if it were me making them.

Snowman.
Wicked witch
Ice cream cone
etc.

But since you asked for boogerman...

That said, if you can swing the spine candles from harry potter, I'm pretty sure I could market them.

I'm inclined to agree with Uno about the shaped candles in general, and in particular there is something appropriate about watching a snowman or ice cream cone melting.

Double layer candle.  Outer layer doesn't melt.  Make it in the shape of a pumpkin.  Inner melts.  Turns into a jack-o-lantern.

Jack O'lantern and Snowman are good ideas.

They're just nick nacks done in wax, ultimately.  I don't really get what the deal is with women and scented candles to begin with - but women see to like giving and receiving them just fine, despite not actually lighting them often.  Casting figurines in wax with a wick, instead of plaster, adds value...
