He's planning to rape-burgle an innocent mainland American family on his way home.

Are you doing anything in the mainland, or are you basically traveling back?

Next to dropping 'samples' in some remote middle-of-nowhere out-of-the-way spot near the eastern shores ( ;)), I booked a few nights in San Diego. The USS Midway there is on my list of things to visit.

Finally back to reasonable prices for a private room. Here in Honolulu I pay a third of what I paid in Maui. And both places are hostels!

And... Northshore goes back to near-Maui levels. But at least the comfort should be of a better standard.

That aside:

I think I did mention before Pearl Harbor was on my list. Plan to make a separate thread for it, but the pictures below wouldn't fit there.

1) I took a navy 'sloop' towards Ford Island...
2) ...to visit the Arizona Memorial.
3) The main part of the ship that still breaks the surface, the base of one of the old gun turrets.
The markers in the background show where the other ships in battleship row were moored at the time of the attack.
4) A picture taken from within the Memorial. A number of people in the group brought a lei with them.
5) I didn't see a single lei return to the shore with us.

For those unaware of what a lei's final fate is in the Hawaiian tradition, the wearer is supposed to unknot the string and return its contents to nature, or a place of significance for him/her.

Testing the Northshore upload speed...

The picture was taken during a whale cruise between Maui and Lanai. IIRC, this one more or less surfaced 50 yards in front of our boat.

Pre-flight jitters: will the Speedishuttle van be on time? No traffic jams to the airport? No problems with the flight back to the mainland? :-\

Let's try play catchup.

1) 'Volcano's in the mist'. The Haleakala caldera on Maui.
2) The highest point on Maui, about  3,050 m.
3) Just clouds going in. That's not volcanic outgassing. The caldera has several 'gaps' in its rim that allow it.
4) Didn't spot it on Big Island, but here is the famous 'Nene'. An offshoot of Canadian goose (IIRC) that took residence on at least Hawaii and Maui several millennia ago.
5) After a 12 mile loop trail, we were 'just' too late to see a traditional sunset on the mountain.

Much better wifi here in my An Diego hotel. It diesn't time out half the time. Though I have to modify the post each time I attach a new picture.

I never knew of the Nene Goose. Some ancestral goose must have said "This migration nonsense is for the birds! Let's fly somewhere nice and stay there." :danc:

Yeah. It looks like the (sub?)species is in the proces of losing its ability to fly. Some don't, most are still capable of it.
