Organizing and Improving Old Faction Graphics
« on: December 02, 2014, 01:41:02 AM »
As part of ACU, BU's agreed to help out bringing the older faction graphics up to scratch. This is the organization/tracking thread. Note that some modern factions are in the below list, they'll just be classed as already fine right away.

; Compatible - These factions are generally thematically compatible with the original 14.
; =======
;
; AARDOM - <note about current faction graphics goes here (e.g. Fine, Needs new bases, needs everything, needs updating to SMAX)>
; acolyte
; ACTIVE
; AGRI
; algorithm
; ANARCHY
; ANCIENT
;
; Alternate - These factions do not fit in with the original 14, but they do attempt to present and explore an ideology in a serious manner.
; =======
;
; acol
; adve
;
; Novelty - Joke factions. Not compatible with the original 14, and are not serious attempts at exploring an ideology.
; =======
;
; ai
;
; Crossover - Factions based explicitly on other media.

; Unsorted

Okay, thanks. Posts from the previous thread:

Sigma: I was not sure where to draw the line between Compatible and Alternate, feel free to rearrange factions. Once you've posted in this thread I'll see if I can make you the author of the OP, not sure how on this software but have on other forums.

BU: Does this seem like a good plan? Post here with your thoughts, edit the OP with notes and when you've fixed stuff?

What faction shall I begin with?  Should I work through the Oceanic Pack first?

Oceanic pack is a higher priority than most of these, but Sigma and I are quite invested in those and will probably pick art from your collection+find leaderheads, so it's probably a good idea to start looking through these first and go back to the Oceanic Pack when we've posted suggestions and stuff.

I think the current first priority is looking at a bunch of these and editing in a one line summary of what you think needs fixing or adding to the OP.

Okay, turns out you can't reattribute single posts on SMF without going into the sql tables and messing about in a way which is totally not worth it and may break everything.

Sigma, could you please post the OP of this topic in a new thread with the same title, then I'll move this topic to the deleted forum? Both BU and I are able to edit it anyway, and it would be useful if all three of us had access to edit the list since you're going to be helping with faction categorization.

I'll also make a thread tomorrow for repairing broken factions that currently won't load. Most of them simply had their spacing and carriage returns stripped from the .txt, which are fairly easy to correct.

Okay, sounds good. You'll probably be able to handle most of the organization for that directly in alphax (move factions from broken to the full list when they're working properly), but it'd help if you get stuck on one or something odd happens.

I've begun adding Thematic Classifications to each custom faction. Here is what I have so far:

COMPATIBLE

AARDOM
acolyte
ACTIVE
AGRI
algorithm
ANCIENT
annihilator
ANTIMIND
APOLLO
Arcology Movement
armada
ARTISAN
AUTH

ALTERNATE
acol
adve
ANARCHY
ATLANTS

NOVELTY
ai
androgyn (These guys would be Alternate, but for all the David Bowie references)

Cool. I wish the anarchists were a bit more realistic, there is a philosophy there, but that faction is over the top stereotype.

Do the factions include the seven Christmas factions from this: http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=8646.0 scenario?

Does the Christmas theme make them novelty factions?  Does that apply, basically, to all non-science fiction-themed factions, or just the funny/silly ones?  I think I've done quite a few novelty factions, but I guess we should work out the definitions.

I have them, but they're currently in my unsorted factions folder so don't show up in ACU. The unsorted factions are mostly modern (made on AC2, may have recent changes) or come in packs that feel more like modpacks than normal custom factions. I'd not decided whether to include them as standalone factions or a collected pack.

And yes, essentially. It'd be pretty hard to imagine any of the christmas factions actually landing on alpha centauri and establishing themselves within the standard story, which is the main way we're organizing them.

Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendent, and to embrace them is to achieve enlightenment.
