Give me your technology or else!

Best way to play  ;miriam;.  (Which is why I think MP games need a rule of no hard feelings out-of-game over what happens in-game.)

You got it backwards. It should be shed pride, and bear honor ::). What a silly mistake :P.

Hi,
i am an organic low voltage bot from germany. I finally decided to register and post here, after i thought about it on many occasions.
I am not an english speaking genius, so i hope you apologize if i should accidentally write something about your mother and dead fishes.

I was lurking around sporadically quiet a long time, maybe my search after editing the sound files lead me to these board, i can't remember exactly. My attention rised dramatically after i discovered JarlWolfs AAR, which i discovered accidentally while searching for Red Army Marches on youtube. Or maybe i searched for red army marches after founding his AAR? I've already forgotten this either.

I am playing SMAC/SMAX since roundabout 2001 or 2002. With some longer breaks i played it almost every week a few hours since then. I like the fact that the game makes you think about things. Politics, technologies, future, astrophysic and so on. There is nothing better than listening to the voyager recordings, crunching some scientific projects (via BOINC) and playing SMAX.
I think it's the truth when i say, that nearly everything of my actual interests was at least a little bit inspired by SMAC/X. I'm not ashamed about that.

I would have registered earlier, but i just didn't want to start here while being within the first rage about some.. well, politics. Doesn't really matter.

But today I realized that i have to register anyway, because there is something very important that i have to do:
I want to express my deep appreciation to Buncle for running this community, and to all modders - especially JarlWolf - for enriching my game experience so much. I think what you are doing here is very important, not only for the registered people, but for the lurkers too, and every high-polished new game (I've even forgotten the title) will meet some difficulties to compare that what SMAX is today:
A combination of a very brilliant game, the imagination of it's players, and the extra content generated by this community.
Thank you very much.

Edit:
Wanted to add, that i'm a LINUX SMACer too, actually running the windows version on a KVM-QEMU VM.

I am honoured that my humble work has directly impacted you so much- and I am trying to still work on my AAR and other things, but life for me at the moment is both busy and I am fairly old. I am not as vigorous as I used to be, and my health is not as vibrant as it could be. I don't suspect that I am completely going but my energy output is fairly bad these days.

If you have question though or any thing to discuss, private messages work. I do have the Skype- but I rarely go on it these days as I lack the energy for it.

New to the site, saying hello, and needing install help
« Reply #336 on: August 09, 2014, 05:25:55 AM »
(note: I wasn't sure where to post this, hopefully this is more or less correct and it'll get read)

First off: Hey Hi y'all !  I'm delighted to have found both this site and you folks :)

About me: I've been around almost since before there even were computers, and playing console, then PC, and finally MMORPG's since the 80's.  Strategy/builder games have been a strong undercurrent through all of it (Dungeon Keeper was a delight 'till I finally couldn't make it work on my new rig) but while I knew of SMAC, somehow I never got it till just recently.  And it's time to make up for lost time!
I'm a modder at heart, but my skill-set is pretty rudimentary as yet.  Still, I'm a scientist-nerd by training and inclination (Anthropology/Archaeology and Botany/Plant Ecology) so I'd probably be decent at alpha testing and such.
I'm in the PNW of the US (Pacific time, -8 GMT) but am usually online at night since I'm nocturnal :)

Unfortunately, I've been having some issues with getting the game(s) to work, currently with the "Unable to allocate draw buffer'' error.  I'm sure folks have solved it long ago, but the install/debugging solutions are rather scattered about and I haven't found a repository of all the info neatly presented, at least as yet.. [Edit: Apparently restarting the comp worked for others, and Presto!  Worked for me too]

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64 with DirectX 11 on a more than adequate machine, I have both the Sold Out and GoG versions of SMAC/SMACX both of which I think are now fully updated with the official patches. (I can't actually check that since the files don't have version data on them, and without the game running I can't do that check either)

When I first got the Sold Out disks, I was able to get SMAC (but not SMACX) running with the advice I found online, confirmed I really wanted to play them, and started having fun with cautious minor modding.  Now, however, even with everything put back to an unmodded state, even that install gives the same error.  I have the Sold Out and GoG versions installed in separate folders in a separate partition from the OS, with the SO one, I even have SMAC in a separate folder from SMACX (that's the one that used to work).
[Edit: with the games now running, I went for the latest unofficial patches on both games (GoG versions)
currently Kyrub's 444_p for SMAC and Yitzi's 2.5j for SMACX.]

Now for the fun parts!!  But I can see there is a lot more to the games than I first expected (a very very good thing), so I'm going to take the learning curve step by step.  Probably play some basic SMAC first, practice with the .txt files a bit, then move on to SMACX.  If anyone has a better plan, lemme know :)

Hi Vidsek!

I'd like to wish you a belated welcome to the forums!

Did you get SMAC working in the end? Your edit seems to suggest so.

If not, my recommendation would be to uninstall all copies of the game (error suggests game wasn't properly uninstalled last time), restart computer, install the gog version and test, then install kyrub and yitzi's patches (keeping backups if the fresh install worked) and test.

The game should work without kyrub and yitzi's patches, but do apply them unless they're causing you errors (fairly unlikely) as they make the AI smarter (adds to immersion) and fix a lot of daft bugs.

Do not install the Sold out version of the game (GOG version is much easier to work with). Do not install the official patches (the GOG version comes patched to final official version).

As for playing the game, I would recommend playing Alpha Centauri (not Alien Crossfire) for the first time at Librarian or lower difficulty (higher than that and the AI is annoyingly aggressive) with kyrub's patch. If you'd like an actually quite good tutorial, go to scenarios and choose 1-Build (or something like that) and work through them.

For modding, depending on what you would like to do, you may find that working in SMAX is easier (thanks to yitzi's various additional switches).

Happy gaming!

I had no idea what I was missing. One of the support guys at gog.com pointed me in this direction, so here I am. It's really great to see the SMAC community is still here. A HUGE thanks to the owners, operators, and contributors here!

Hello all, I'm back

Very sorry I suddenly showed up and suddenly disappeared.  My life went a little nuts for a while or quite nuts actually, and still has't calmed down, but I'm back and can work on things.  I am now in the process of transferring things over to a different new computer (long story) and will post the things when I can.

One thing, I know that I was invited to help with some stuff, and I Know that I disappeared on it.  Again, apologies.  Please let me know if there is still anything handing around that you would like me to work on.

THanks again

Anyone else feels like it's time to fix the faction graphics bug?

Hi folks, demon59 here.
Signed up a while back, but don't remember introducing myself. I enjoy most turn-based strategy games, but SMAC has always been a favorite. Bought the GOG version, recently to finally try out the Alien Crossfire expansion. Not a prolific poster, but I do check in pretty regularly (when I can afford 'net access). Happy to meet y'all.

Hey, I'm Flux.
I found this forum after modifying and renaming the Pirates text file. (didn't know about faceedit back then... I guess I should be thankful)
Well, it kind of worked when I added it to the game but did nothing besides change the blurb and base name. So I wanted to go a little farther and make one with graphics, so I ended up finding this. I'll say that I figured out how pretty quickly, judging by the 2 factions I've already completed.
Left the internet, more-or-less.... Might drop in occasionally.
