Whenever I reinstall SMAC and search for patches and advise, I inevitably go across all of the major forums searching for pieces of information. This time, I came here. It seemed like a good place, and some prominent members of the community were posting here too. People seem friendly, so I even stopped lurking!

Hi Folks,

I've joined up as I've always been intrigued as why SMAC has attracted such a solid fan base.  SMAC was before my time - I started my foray into the Civ genre with CTP2.  I dabbled a bit with that but then got heavily into Civ3 & Civ4, especially multiplay.  Since Beyond Earth was announced, I was fascinated to read the speculation as to how it would compare with SMAC.  So I've decided to play SMAC.   8)

I have a few terribly noobish questions which I would appreciate some help with:

  • I have a Mac.  Is it best to download SMAC for a Mac, or download a windows version of SMAC and run it in bootcamp (Windows 7)?
  • Once I've installed the latest patches, is there an unofficial mod to install to fix any left over bugs and balance issues?
  • If so, is this mod compatible with the Mac version of the game?
  • Should I start with SMAC or just go straight into SMAX?

      I let others more knowledgeables talk about computers but about this: the expansion brings new factions and some new techs and infrstructure but doesn't change mechanisms.
      Since you're new, play SMAC! You'll get the background story unfolding and everything good.
      SMAC all the way!

      Thanks guys,

      I decided in the end to install the windows version on Bootcamp.  Works fine.  This way if I want to install mods or play multiplayer, there shouldn't be any problems.

      I'm going to try my first game this weekend.  :)

      Thanks also for the links to the SMAC story - I've downloaded Journey to Centuri - looking forward to reading that this weekend too.

      Now.. just need to think of a way to break this to andykitten.. she doesn't like it when my attention isn't focused in the way she wants ;)
