Confession of Selfishness
« on: December 04, 2013, 07:16:06 AM »
I think I've read every thread on all of the great Civ. sites as a total lurker. I've rarely contributed.

It's so funny because I'm a technical writer by trade and yet I've never felt comfortable participating in forums - its really hard for me to communicate in this venue.

Anyway, I want to apologize. A couple of months ago, I thought I'd dig in and get involved in the community by helping with the thread for a program to switch between patches and/or mods; as I had written a DOS batch file a few years ago which basically did just that. The thread puzzled me, because I thought everyone knew DOS. But before uploading this dinosaur, I thought on it for a few days. Then I realized that we don't have an override directory, but we could create one.

The night before I had to go on a month-long trip, I tried to explain it on the thread. For some reason, I couldn't upload my jpeg  files for my tutorial. I was p.o.'ed and I was rude. Again, I apologize.

I'm back and I have the solution and I'm going to the modding forum and post it tomorrow. (heh)

For what it's worth, I love this site. You're my kind of people. Though I may never talk with you, I feel that you're my friends.

Among the more glorious duties in my storied job history was having the honor of updating a group who had only ever used dumb terminals straight to a windows xp environment.

I learned how interesting it can be to attempt to teach the use of a mouse to people who had never seen it...

So, while you may as well be speaking greek there, I can totally understand getting POed and rude when people aren't understanding something you find to be simple/common sense.

Remember, genes are NOT blueprints. This means you can't, for example, insert the genes for an elephant's trunk into a giraffe and get a giraffe with a trunk. There are no genes for trunks. What you CAN do with genes is chemistry, since DNA codes for chemicals. For instance, we can in theory splice the native plants' talent for nitrogen fixation into a terran plant.
