An alternate way of measuring tech level

The normal way of measuring the level of a tech, used by the game, is as 1 more than the level of its highest-level prerequisite, with the no-prerequisite techs being level 1.  While this certainly has its advantages, it fails to fully express the actual difficulty of getting the tech, so I'd propose a different method: Prerequisite tree size, i.e. the number of prerequisites it has, including itself.  The ranking tends to be very similar, but this one is somewhat more precise and does involve a few surprises.

The following is a list of all the techs with their prerequisite tree size.  With each tech I'm adding its tier, that is the level as calculated by the game.  I'm using italics for SMAX-only stuff, bold for SMAC-only values.

*One suggested approach to balance air power is (among other things) to make AMA a prerequisite for D:AP.  This would change the values for these two techs follows:

**Another idea to modify the tech tree for alien crossfire is to move the prerequisites of Planetary Economics back to Environmental Economics and Intellectual Integrity, and make the prerequisites of Environmental Economics be Ecological Engineering and Adaptive Economics.  This would modify the values of these techs as follows:

Planetary Economics (tier 6): 15
Advanced Ecological Engineering (tier 7): 27

***A third idea to modify the tech tree for alien crossfire, in order to have all the "secrets" techs be a prerequisite for Transcendence again, is to move the prerequisites of Matter Transmission to Matter Editation and Secrets of Creation, have Temporal Mechanics require Matter Transmission and Secrets of the Manifolds, and have Threshold of Transcendence require Temporal Mechanics and Eudaimonia.  This would modify the values of the latter two of these techs as follows:

****A fourth idea, in order to avoid mostly-superfluous prerequisites (cases where one prerequisite for a tech requires the other prerequisite, barring trading), is to change Superconductor to require Optical Computers and Planetary Networks, and Industrial Nanorobotics to require Nanominiaturization and Advanced Ecological Engineering.  This would change the values of techs as follows:

Singularity Mechanics (tier 12), Matter Transmission (tier 13), Temporal Mechanics (tier 14), Controlled Singularity (tier 13), Threshold of Transcendence (tier 15), String Resonance (tier 16), Transcendent Thought (tier 16)

If used together with the third idea, the value for Threshold of Transcendence is increased by 2, and for Temporal Mechanics by 4.

In addition, Sentient Resonance is increased to 51 if using the fifth idea together with the fourth, and 52 if using the second as well, and Matter Transmission is increased by 1 if using the third idea and another one if using both the second and the third.

******A sixth idea for Alien Crossfire, in order to prevent dead ends, is to make Transcendent Thought require String Resonance and if using the fifth idea to also use the fourth as regards Industrial Nanorobotics.  This will then change things to:
Transcendent Thought (tier 17): 86

plus, if using the fifth idea, it will add all the effects of using the fourth except for those to Superconductor and Applied Relativity.

By hand.  There are a few tricks (e.g. use the value for its harder-to-get prerequisite and then just add what's left, or near the end just count what isn't needed), but essentially I did it by hand.

It does, doesn't it?  Makes it easy to get defense against air power before the other guy can get air power, fits the "doctrines" theme (a military algorithm isn't that different from a military doctrine), and of course pushes air power up a bit on the tech tree.

The second change was meant to move that section of the tech tree to be more like in the non-expansion.  As a bonus, if you remove the "commerce" tag from Industrial Automation and Industrial Nanorobotics (they probably don't need the help) and give it to Adaptive Economics, then all 5 commerce techs are in a nice neat line.

The third change was mainly meant to give a way to put Secrets of Creation back into the beeline to transcendence.  As a bonus, it makes more sense that Eudaimonia (a social concept) would play a role in Transcendence than in the technical capability of Temporal Mechanics.

Of course, that just adds, the techs, it doesn't make them do anything.  So let's change a few more things:
1. There is a line in the RULES section that says:

Change it to:

2. There is a line in the Facilities section that says:

Change it to:

3. You wanted to add Heavy Transport as well; let's add it to Nanometallurgy (the other transport abilities can keep it company).   The line says:

IMO, Nanometallurgy (Explore 8!) is way too late.  You get increased transport capacity with the cruiser hull at Doc: Init (Explore 4).  Maybe put Heavy Transport at level 3, IndAuto or something.


Alternatively postpone cruisers to level 6 and slot Heavy Transport in at Doc: Init.  Then foil/heavy/cruiser goes 2/4/6.

Probably because the design team realized there wasn't really a place for them as it was, but they realized it late enough that it would be too difficult to rewrite the code to have nothing in that slot.

I'll give the expanded set (with commerce changes and deleted technologies) a spin.

A few comments on the new techs:
  • According to BLURBS.TXT, it should be "Inertial Damping" and "Global Energy Theory".  I think I got those wrong in the other thread.
  • I decided to move The Ascetic Virtues to Global Energy Theory as well, as it makes a bit more sense to me to have it there, and GET needs a bit more.
  • These two are going to need new icons.  Inertial Damping uses the same icon as Singularity Mechanics, and Global Energy Theory uses Sentient Econometrics' icon.  If anyone's already taken a shot at new icons, let me know; otherwise I will.
