possible to add a chassis?
« on: May 19, 2018, 06:39:05 AM »
What I want, is more than one kind of missile chassis.  I want Conventional Missiles to have the range and effect that they currently do.  I want a Planet Buster that can hit the entire planet, in essence an ICBM.  I think it's completely stupid that we can't hit wherever we want on Planet with a big enough missile.  Launching orbital satellites implies that we can do this, and it's 1957 technology.  Now in my mod I've accomplished the latter, by giving missiles a speed of 99 and a refueling range of 3.  Now they can hit lots of stuff immediately, and the entire planet eventually, up to a 2*3*99=594 by 594 planet.  Assuming no barriers are getting in the way; on a more typically sized world, missiles could dance around quite a bit before hitting targets.  So I've got ICBMs.  Problem is, I only have 1 missile chassis to work with, so I effectively don't have short range Conventional Missiles anymore.  You can make them, but they're godawful expensive.

I thought, maybe if I just duplicate those weird "3d unit" files, maybe I can have another chassis.  But I'm not even sure which ones are for missiles.  I'm also imagining that somewhere in the game, it has to be told about these new (but duplicate) files.  I suspect that's an .exe modding problem.

Just adding another "Missile, blah, blah, blah" line in the Chassis section, definitely hasn't worked for me.

I notice that the 3d artwork for Quantum and Graviton guns is identical, so there is some kind of basis for simply repeating 3d unit files.

Unfortunately I haven't learned anything more about adding a chassis to the game.  Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles are working well in my mod though.  I don't find myself missing the shorter range missiles.  I'm actually glad that the AI finds them to be expensive and won't make them to spam me with.  I didn't like the "missile pestering" aspect of the game.
