Drop pod colonies seem to really help the AI

I was slowly familiarizing myself with how to mod SMAC, and I accidentally made a Psi Defense, Drop Pod colony pod and former available to the AI. It seemed to really improve it's performance - suddenly it wasn't losing half it's early game colonies and formers to mind worms, and it wouldn't get stuck on small islands.

I was wondering if anyone else had noticed similar, and figured fellow single player fans might appreciate the trick. :)
