What is your favorite season?
« on: December 17, 2015, 01:45:00 PM »
Favorite seasons, people.  Bonus points for why.

Shouldn't be much of a surprise mine is fall.  What may surprise is Halloween is an afterthought in that.

Summer is broiling hot, so the most comfortable temps are in spring and fall.  Spring is usually the wetter of the two.  The air is usually clear as the winter inversion hasn't kicked in yet.

A good winter would typically be my second favorite, love the snow.  But, when it's dry, pollution makes the air toxic to me.  So, spring is usually next.  Warmer weather, can start working on things in the yard again.  Comfortable, no pollution, etc.

Summer. Let it be wet or dry, as long as it's not cold. I don't care how hot it gets.
Two possibilities exist: Either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying. ― Arthur C. Clarke

The winter remains my favorite season because it allows the temperatures to reach a comfortable level without fluctuations in between the cool spells. The fall does not remain my favorite season because the wind usually increases around this period, the summer does not remain my favorite season because it becomes extremely hot, and the spring does not remain my favorite season because the plants begin to bloom in this period.

Spring. It's so full of life and hope.

Yeah, I know. That spectrum of color as the deciduous trees come back to life heralds a painful pollen-induced pounding sinus headache. In spite of that, I love spring most of all. It's not just everything coming to life again, it's lengthening daylight and warming temperatures, too. It gets better and better, day by day. As for the rain, I've endured enough droughts to become a rain lover.

Fall. I feel energized by that first crisp nip in the air that signals winter coming in a couple of months.

I've always associated fall with the start of school, and even though it's been nearly 20 years since I took my last formal class in anything (it was a linguistic anthropology course in college), it's still a time when I feel like cracking open a nonfiction book and learning something.

The autumn colors here are gorgeous - every shade of red, yellow, and orange you can think of. I love the smell of dead leaves, especially mixed with the smell of ripe crabapples. After the first frost the crabapples turn sweet, and they're so tasty!

I like winter for the stargazing. Some of the most gorgeous things the Hubble telescope has photographed are visible in the winter. Pillars of Creation? They're in Orion, which is front and center all winter.

Spring is the season of mud and allergies, and summer is the season of mosquitoes and cloudy skies that take a perverse delight in occurring on August 12, right on time for me to not be able to see the Perseid meteor shower.

So fall is my favorite, and winter isn't that bad most of the time.

Fall. Although perhaps I should say (American) football season, which technically starts before fall actually does.

In addition to football, I like that the temperatures cool down. And in late fall hockey & basketball seasons start up.

Fall. It's cool, there's usually a nice breeze, the leaves are gorgeous, and everything starts dying, which means I can be outside without having to worry about bugs, or spiders, or pollen, or bees.
