Is there any patch/solution to the 2048 unit limit problem?

Couple of years back I ran into a problem with one of my epic games. SMAC/SMAX has a bug that does not allow you to have more than 2048 units combined (player and AI). My memory is hazy, but I think the symptoms was that it either crashed, or no new units were being built, making the game unplayable.

That was in 2011. Has any of the developments in the last few years made any progress in increasing the total unit limit?

Sort of.  I know what the issue is, I know how to solve it, and it would be a huge job.  So if enough people want it more than any of the easier things I could do, by enough of a degree, I could do it...but it seems unlikely as long as there are easier widely-desired goals yet to be done.
