Tonight my niece was sick, and she wanted a grilled cheese sandwich. She and my wife are partial to American and Cheddar. I made myself one with provolone and turkey breast. Really nailed the crunchy/chewy on all of them.

I wanted a cold beer to go with it. Beer is supposed to be better at cleansing the palate of cheese, on account of carbonation. I knew I had some Guinness in the fridge, but I pulled out a Sam Adams Cold Snap, left over from winter. I got it as part of a mixed case, and it's not something I'd buy again. It's made with orange peels, plums, and coriander.

But you know what? It really hit the spot!

Why is it that beer must be pure, but it's ok to add stuff to wine? Because monks made the wine for "medicinal purposes", and beer was a dietary staple?

There was a time when brewers brewed very bad beers because they added cheap ingredients to it instead of the pricy heap and malt. Bood the Bavarian people demanded a good beer that doesn't make you sick... so finally the "Bayrische Reinheitsgebot" was created. It originally regulated ingredients and pricing as well.

That makes sense.
Did they regulate sausage, too?

Not that I'm aware of it. Sausage was usually made from the parts of animals you couldn't use in other ways, so the usual ingredients were relatively cheap in comparison to other meat.
