Kyle's pretty much knocking out the yard this year.  Took vacation just to help set up.  I'm debating whether to put extra effort than planned in or just get it done and chill as a result.

Been through about a dozen lighting tests.  Here's the more or less final (minus pumpkins of course) 

The ancient path of death.


The two scarecrows (hard to see on the left here) will get pumpkins for heads tomorrow.  I'll pick randomly from the carvings. 



The front is going to be largely, if not entirely unmolested from pumpkins.









Though I might put some pumpkins on the gate/entrance to the path of death. 


daytime front.  The graves are made of coconut coir.  Its excellent for the lawn, will aid with drought conditions and the [poopy] soil conditions under some of the sod.  Will spread it about after halloween.

Party is always on the 30th, unless the state happens to declare the 30th for Halloween itself, as happens when Halloween falls on Sunday.  The party itself has fallen on Sunday with little to no ill effects.

Good night. 

1 child in tears   She was older, even.  8 or so, and was having absolutely none of it just based on my costume. 

The cold forced me to change my costume plans, so I didn't really 'fit'.  Not that anyone else would notice.  Back to my 'father halloween' green man based mask, which I do adore and donned my fur along with my unfinished vine cloak.  I got called everything from the devil to a viking.  Kept me warm enough. 

Talia and two other girls went a-spooking in the back yard and did a great job of it.  One of them has mastered the Samara crawl, and dressed the part.  They had fun, and potential is there for helpers for 5 years or so if they keep wanting to scare instead of trick or treat. 

Probably in terms of pure numbers down from other years (I'll do a count tomorrow, but it felt like 400 as opposed to near 600 at our peak a few years back), but that's mostly the 'richer' half of the neighborhood aging out.  The lower income houses keep fresh youngsters coming.  A lot of cars this year, folks that have moved away bringing kids back to our place. 

2 fantastic product finds this year in some fake candles and alternative lighting for the pumpkins.  Both operate on remote control, so make our thing night and day easier to turn on/off.  No more half hour or more just setting up/tearing down. 

Other successful tests were hurricane oil lanterns as lighting.  Cheaper, easier, and more focused than the torches.  Rain and windproof.  Not a replacement, really, but different and worth exploring more.  Scented candles inside select pumpkins also was a win.  A dozen scattered about the hundred pumpkins added a noticeable effect.   

I'll never understand the desire to turn the Grinch into a feature length film.  It's an OK cartoon at it's present 45ish minute run time, but even THAT has plenty of filler crap in it. 

If anything, Halloween is Grinch night has more potential.
