Welcome Raaf!!

Lots of beginners here (after a year or two I'm very much one), and some awesome oldtimers and experts.
I've been treated very well, learned a bunch, and had fun.  I think you can expect the same :)

Niven and Pournelle are among my favorites too.  Also CJ Cherryh, Tanath Lee, and many others I forget the spelling of...
Escapist, yes, but they made me think in new ways and areas that changed me in ways I still think have been good.

For an old and superficially simple game, it has a surprising amount of complexity and depth.  If you read through all the threads on just this forum you'll be....um, probably just as confused as I am...but with time it starts to make sense.  Any point along the way it's fun to play, and often, the unexpected adds to that.

If you're using SMAX, I seriously advise installing Yitzi's latest patch and the PRACX addition by Plotinus as well.  They improve the experience quite a lot.
There are still a lot of bugs and design flaws waiting to be dealt with, but we have some talented folks working on them, so the future of this opus looks good.

And again, welcome aboard :D
All this talk of fungus and worms makes me hungry...

Bodhisattva. Came across this while discussing with someone who was unable to get SMAC running on el capitan. Long time fan of the game, of course. :)

Greetings and salutations, Chironites. I've enjoyed the GOG release of SMAC+SMAX for a few years...lessee, first encountered Alpha Centauri in early 2000s when a buddy referred to some of the quotes in a philosophy class - IIRC the teacher encouraged him to bring the game in but setting up a hotseat game took too much class time, heh. Good times.

The Jesus Incident is on my reading list since learning a bit about it on the wikipedia article for the game at least a year ago. I'm not sure if my current laptop is able to run Beyond Earth but mean to check that out at some point in the future too.

I believe I was looking up info on the scenario editor / custom scenarios when I found this forum yesterday...pretty sure I've consulted the wiki before :)

Yikes! 31 pages in this thread! (I only read pages 1 and 27-31.) This does seem to be a friendly forum.

...I was remarking to Mylochka just yesterday -because I turned a (FPS?) Call of Duty theme into the SMAC theme- that this crowd likes RTS like Age of Empires a LOT, but prefers the more deliberate pace of TBS.  AOE is a lot of fun, but we find them a bit stressful, and TBS unleashes the inner pedant's love of taking time with details...

My problem is that when things get intense onscreen my coordination goes to heck. So a TBS is easier for me.  :-[  I'm pretty casual about gaming, it isn't unusual for me to lose when playing against another human.

As you can see, I didn't put a lot of thought into my name last night when I joined. I usually put a little more thought into handles.

Found this forum via a "windows 10 alpha centauri" search on Duckduckgo. Sometimes I use Google if I'm doing really specific searches.

Learning that SMAC will work on a Win10 system was a plus.

My first computer was an Apple][+ which dates me. Even had a computer that ran on CP/M at one point. I may also qualify for the 'hick' label as our town had a population of 7,000 when I was young.

As far as when I started using SMAC, I'm forgetting whether I was using Win3.1 or Win95 when I bought the game. Since the original SMAC didn't have DRM, I could move it to each newer system without doing an actual install. (On older systems it was easier to just install it. Moving large chunks of data wasn't easy. Remember sneaker net?) Still have the original CD.

I don't mean to be insulting to programmers who have done excellent work, but I haven't paid much attention to patches and mods. I have borrowed a couple of crude alterations to the game files. One to prevent the building of floating cities and another to prevent building alien lifeforms. At one point I modified an antigravity transport to hold 16 units, but I later replaced the file with a clean backup of the original and didn't bother to repeat that alteration. I'm not confident that my changes haven't affected the stability of the game.

Enough writing! I need to catch up on what others are writing.

One last note: It isn't unusual for me to be offline for stretches of two weeks or more. Please be patient if you're waiting for a response from me.

Hello.

I don't remember when I found this place but it was related to looking up mods and fixes to running smac/x on my new laptop.

Howdy y'all. :P

Hi!

I played a lot of SMAC/SMAX back in 199-2002.  I later picked up a copy of the Planetary Pack through GOG, but didn't actually do anything with it.  Then I recently noticed that I was rather bored, and fired it up, and got hooked again.  So, I'm playing SMAX again, I've broken the back of the computer opposition and am in position to cruise to a Transcendence victory . . .  and a bug triggered by a computer-versus-computer air attack/interception interaction crashes the game.  I am very annoyed, and I search the Internet for patches.  Which lead me here!

Now, some old ideas I had for a modpack are percolating, and I'm reading years of accumulated information to figure out exactly what I'm going to do . . .

Command Nexus is our MP forum.  Ask around in there - and be patient/persistent.

I'm not a bot.  I got Alpha Centauri years ago and played it (badly) on and off since.  I got it on GOG a while back to get the expansion.  I was playing recently and kept running into various bugs that were fixed on my old install by a 3rd party patch, I think one of scient's.  I was googling patches and stumbled here to find out, holy cow, people are still patching this game!  So I conclude it's very good, but has lots of bugs.

I have limited time to play but am trying to understand the mechanics better, and enjoying reading posts here.

Howdy people.

My first post here, still learning about the place. Lurkity lurk =)

PS regarding the question, I found this by googling, "civilization forums" ( or something like that!? ) was the keyword.

Hi all.  I came across BUncle's post on the Civ Fanantics Board which led here.  I'm not much of a modder, and still play SMAC, but only occasionally.  It still is one of my all time favorite games.   It really still seems fresh after all these years.

Anyways, I hope to learn something here and have a little fun.  Thanks!

As the writhing, teeming mass of mindworms swarmed over the outer perimeter, we saw the defenders recoil in horror. 'Stay calm! Use your flame guns!' shouted the commander, but to no avail. It is well know that the Mind Worm Boil uses psychic terror to paralyze its prey, and then carefully implants ravenous larvae into the brains of its still-conscious victims. Even with the best weapons, only the most disciplined troops can resist this horrific attack.
