Tracking an urban legend.
« on: September 23, 2013, 08:16:22 PM »

OK.  Slenderman.

If you know it, great, if not, it's not really worth your time.

I was fortunate to see the beginning of the slenderman legend, but grew bored and moved on... it's recently changed...

Someone making a costume this year confused the hell out of me by putting tentacles all over it.  So, I went looking and see all kinds of wierdness has been added recently.

I don't want any links or anything, I can get those.  Just curious what, if anything, y'all know about it.

Never heard of it, that I recall.

You've sort of obligated yourself to tell the story now...

It started as a photoshop contest for 'paranormal photos' (you can see why I was there for the beginning), but this entry overshadowed the contest and has taken a life of it's own.  Couple recent movies (and some more coming out) borrow heavily off it.

Would be counter productive to my experiment here.

I've played Slender and seen memes and references to it on Facebook, but I never saw any of the original discussion or photos.
Taking me seriously is generally discouraged, mostly because even I don't take me seriously.

I've seen it off and on, and I've seen enough young folks get over-hyped about it online. I got sick of hearing about it constantly and don't want to even bother with it for the most part.

(Not saying I am snuffing out my interest in this subject- just I've had more then an earful about it.)

You ivory tower intellectuals must not lose touch with the world of industrial growth and hard currency. It is all very well and good to pursue these high-minded scientific theories, but research grants are expensive. You must justify your existence by providing not only knowledge but concrete and profitable applications as well.
