Why are so many of the items in the shop unpurchasable/disabled?

Various reasons.  We need more goodies for sale, I don't even know where to look for more, and sisko stays in RL time heck most of the time, and is busy keeping the software running when he is here.

All the disabled stuff is somehow broken or too troublesome to allow, I believe.  (And Random Money is sucker odds, so I cannot recommend that one.)  I do wish sisko would put the "Buy Custom Avatar" item back - I can't find it, and I think we should allow that for anyone who'd rather blow 200 EC than ask me to take care of it...

Perhaps activating something like steal credits would be a great amount fun? I know blantant thievery is frowned upon but how would I be able to resist such a temptation?  I know, the answer is no.

I'd like to give sisko a chance to weigh in on that...

How could you be sure anyone but me would be a good sport about it?

If an item like sticky topics were to run out, would anybody be able to restock them?

Yeah; I can do that.

But you should really, really be trying to save up and get 1,000 EC in the Bank, so you'll be getting in on that crazy daily compound interest, and in a few months have more fake forum money than you'll ever want to spend...

If I knew that we might already have them.  I see a lot of potential for fun, but we've not implemented enough stuff to get that.  As it stands, the EC accumulating is pretty worthless, except for the threads Dio has stickied...

Hmm. Closest thing that comes to my mind is something we had on I Can Has Cheezburger a couple of years ago. They started a Collectibles program, where 4 new ones were available every 2-3 weeks. Each day a member visited, they'd randomly get one of the 4, and if they had duplicates they could give them away to somebody else.

The idea of EC and The Shop was to motivate people to be more active, of course.  I don't think the idea is a bad one at all, but we need some sort of forum goodies -I don't think LolCollectables is quite right for this crowd, alas - worth buying.

If someone took an interest in googling something like "SMF Shop items" and pointed me at some desirable stuff I could install, that would be a start...

Oh, I didn't mean those specifically - just the idea of collecting stuff. After all, most people enjoy doing that, and virtual collectibles don't take up anywhere near the amount of room that non-virtual ones do.
