Hibernating Robotic Space Arm Wakes Up To Transfer Object On The ISS

The new European Robotic Arm (ERA) by the European Space Agency (ESA) has completed its first transfer of an object following cosmonaut commands in the International Space Station. Many tasks are performed automatically by robotic arms on the ISS. They can be controlled directly or programmed in advance to complete actions. There are two other robotic arms aboard the International Space Station – Canada's Canadarm2 and Japan's Japanese Experiment Module Remote Manipulator System.

The robotic arms from Canada and Japan were fully operational on the International Space Station, performing an active role in the process of berthing visiting vehicles, regular station maintenance checks, and latching external payloads. However, they were unable to access the station's Russian orbital segment. Various forms of base points and payload mounting units prohibit their use in other areas of the ISS. As a result, the ERA entered the scene to service the Russian segment. The European Robotic Arm (ERA) is the first robot with the ability to 'walk' around the Russian section of the ISS.

Teams in Moscow, Russia, and ESA's control room in the Netherlands monitored the ERA's moves on Aug. 24. During the first motion, Russian cosmonauts woke the robotic arm from hibernation, extended it, and moved a small suitcase-sized payload from one side of the Nauka Multipurpose Laboratory Module and reinstalled it in its original position. ERA went back into hibernation after the process, which took about six hours to complete. The trial showed that the European Robotic Arm can relocate and latch payloads outside the Russian segment of the ISS with a precision of 5mm. ERA resembles a human arm in many ways. Elbows, shoulders, and wrists are all present and accounted for. The 11-meter robust European robotic arm has a maximum payload capacity of eight tonnes, and it can endure temperatures ranging from -150 to 120 Celsius.

The Warrior's bland acronym, MMI, obscures the true horror of this monstrosity. Its inventors promise a new era of genius, but meanwhile unscrupulous power brokers use its forcible installation to violate the sanctity of unwilling human minds. They are creating their own private army of demons.
~Commissioner Pravin Lal 'Report on Human Rights'
