Manual poll: Unexpected interests
« on: February 08, 2016, 03:59:02 PM »
Someone would have told me 5 years ago, hEt and I would become bird watchers, I'd have laughed in their face.

However, Talia put up a feeder they made in school, not much happened, and it broke, so we bought her another and posted it by the sliding door to the back yard 2 years ago.  We now regularly have a slew of birds gathered about the feeder all winter, and it's rather fun to see them.  I'm generally curious when I see new birds as well.  Couple I couldn't identify over the weekend.

What are some things you never expected to enjoy, but do?

Segways. I've been on something like 14 different tours in various cities. Sort of like walking tours, but more fun. Also it lets you see the world from the perspective of a much taller person. I much prefer the X-2 model with the pneumatic turf tires for going off of the street/ bike path. They absorb the shocks instead of your knees.

People management online - the janitorial aspects of forum management are kinda the same skillset/attitude as doing puzzles and playing solitaire, and sorting games like that, so no shock that I took to it; but some days, I'm able to put a soft word in with people and keep it all friendly and pleasant, and get the desired results and not even look like I'm doing anything.  That feels pretty good to someone who's always been terrible with people.

The boundary between cold water and warm, the Thermocline, has been important to undersea warfare for hundreds of years of man's history. Now we have found away to harness that power for constructive purposes. Once what cloaked us can now feed us. Once what shielded us from death, now brings us life.
~Captain Ulrik Svensgaard 'The Ripple and the Wave'
